Chapter 1

I slipped the ring off my finger and tossed it onto the table.

My husband, Jack Lumber, frowned as he looked at me.

After a few seconds, he said irritably, "Grow up, Nora. I'm working with the press on a standard food safety inspection. Everything is strictly by the book."

He pinched the bridge of his nose and stepped closer. "You know what's happening in the disaster zone. Thousands of lives are on the line. I have to minimize the risk."

His words used to be reassuring, but now they sounded cold and empty.

Before they burned the disaster relief meals, I'd handed him the inspection reports. He didn't even look. He just glanced down at his phone, then told me to go ahead.

Meanwhile, Shirley Watson stood nearby, putting on a concerned look as if she'd come to smooth things over.

"Nora, this is all my fault," she said, trying to sound apologetic.

"I've done a lot of undercover investigations into illegal food operations. I noticed something was off about the meat in the meal boxes. I was worried people in the disaster zone could get sick.

"So I immediately reported it to Jack and exposed the issue on my livestream. It's just a professional instinct. Please don't be angry with him."

On her livestream, she'd pointed at the camera and condemned me for profiting from a national disaster. Now she was standing in front of me, pretending she was just there to mediate.

She really knew how to play both sides.

"If you only suspected something was wrong, why did your livestream team have four cameras set up in advance?"

I looked her straight in the eye.

"And why was the press release about contaminated meals published exactly one minute before the food was seized? Ms. Watson, are you a psychic?"

The corner of Shirley's mouth twitched.

Jack immediately stepped between us.

"Nora, that's enough! The media was there to cover the relief effort. They just happened to catch what was happening. Shirley is a reporter doing her job. Do you really have to assume the worst of everyone?"

He held his arm out protectively, shielding her from me.

I looked down at the simple silver band lying on the table. Three years ago, he'd slid it onto my finger. His eyes had been warm and full of certainty as he said, "You're stuck with me now."

I picked up the ring and looked at it one last time.

"Well, I hope it was all worth it." With that, I turned and walked out.

"Nora!" Jack called after me.

I didn't look back.

Back in the office, the air felt stale, thick with the smell of printer paper and instant coffee.

Dozens of employees sat at their desks, staring at the cancellation notices scattered on the tables. Major cinema chains, regional supermarkets, and distributors in seven states had all pulled their orders.

They all gave the same reason. They wanted to avoid the fallout from the food safety controversy.

The 30,000 relief meals were part of an official aid program approved by our board. I had personally overseen production and made sure we sourced every ingredient from reputable suppliers. Now, it had all been reduced to ash in an incinerator.

The company was now being accused of profiting from a national disaster. We'd lost half our business, costing us tens of millions of dollars overnight.

Helen Jones from Administration had her head down on the desk. Her shoulders were trembling. She'd worked for me for three years and was one of the most efficient people in the department.

I walked over and gently tapped the edge of her desk.

She looked up, and tears were brimming in her eyes. "Ms. Kurt, my parents called me today. They asked if I was working for some corrupt, shady food company. I told them I wasn't, but they didn't believe me."

Someone behind us shoved their keyboard aside with a dull thud. No one said a word, but their frustration was clear.

The crisp suit he always wore was gone, replaced by a cheap, worn-out jacket. His hair was soaked through, plastered against his pale, haggard face. His eyes lit up when he saw me walk out. He rushed toward me but stopped a couple of feet away. "Nora..."I opened my umbrella and looked at him coldly without saying a word."I went to the hospital in the disaster zone today," Jack said, his body shaking as he wiped rain from his face."I saw those kids with food poisoning. There was this little girl who was badly dehydrated from diarrhea. She kept asking her mom why the food the volunteers brought tasted sour."He took a shaky breath. "Nora, I'm sorry. I was so wrong. Shirley fooled me. I had no idea she'd been using me all this time. I didn't know she could be so cruel.""Are you done?" The umbrella cast a shadow over my face, hiding my contempt.Jack looked up at me. Rainwater was running down his face, and his eyes were full of desperation. "Nora, I lost my job. I have nothing

Shirley's face instantly went pale.I pulled out a second document and held it up right in front of Jack."Second, the original lab report from the food safety testing center. Mr. Lumber, every one of the 30,000 emergency meals you destroyed met all the safety standards."Jack's eyes widened as he stared at the "PASSED" stamp on the report. He turned sharply toward Shirley onstage. "Shirley... tell me this isn't true. How could your uncle...""Mr. Lumber, are you still going to pretend you don't see what's going on?" I stepped closer, and my voice was cold. "You called it due process, but you were really just giving them cover to put people's lives at risk."I pointed to the giant screen showing the sick victims in the disaster zone."Is this what you call protecting the public? Is this what you meant by minimizing the risks?"I looked him straight in the eye. "Jack, how do you sleep at night when you know exactly what's happening to those people?""I didn't! I didn't know!" Ja

"Nora, have you lost your mind?"Jack shot to his feet in the front row, his face turning ashen. He hurried into the aisle and stepped in front of me."Do you know what kind of event this is? This is an awards ceremony being livestreamed nationwide!"He lowered his voice, and his eyes were hard with anger. "If you're angry with me, take it up with me at home. Don't come here and make a scene! Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is?"I looked at the man in front of me. He was my husband, but he was snarling at me in public to protect another woman."Mr. Lumber," I said coldly. "I'm not here to make a scene. I'm here to report a crime."Shirley quickly cut in. "Report a crime? You're the one who broke the law by selling unsafe products. What right do you have to make accusations here?"She had recovered from the shock and immediately turned the crowd against me."Don't listen to her! She's the owner of the company behind that contaminated food. Her company is bankrupt, and

At the city theater, the big screen on stage flashed the words, "Hold the Line. Defend Food Safety".I wore a plain black jacket and a baseball cap, sitting quietly in the sixth row beside Martin. At 10:00 am sharp, the awards ceremony began. Cameras had been set up throughout the theater to livestream the event.Shirley walked onto the stage to thunderous applause. She was wearing a business suit with a red corsage pinned to her chest. She had looked devastated when she exposed my company. Now, she looked radiant, barely able to hide her smug smile."As a former investigative reporter, I've always believed it's my job to expose the truth," she said into the microphone. "When I discovered a company trying to profit from a disaster by shipping spoiled food to the victims, I was furious."She paused deliberately, letting her eyes redden at just the right moment. "Some people threatened me. Others tried to buy me off. But I refused to back down. The people in the disaster zone deser

Jack stared at the divorce papers. His face went rigid, then twisted with offended anger."Nora, do you seriously think threatening me with divorce is going to make me get your penalty overturned?"I'm so disappointed in you. You're so desperate to avoid taking responsibility that you're even using our marriage as leverage."Looking at his angry face, I suddenly found the whole thing almost absurd. He had ordered 30,000 relief meals, meant to save lives, to be destroyed. People in the disaster zone were being served spoiled food. Yet he thought all I cared about was a ten-thousand-dollar fine."I've already signed them," I repeated calmly. "You don't have to get the penalty overturned and force yourself to stay married to me. Take the papers. I'll see you at the courthouse tomorrow."The corner of Jack's eye twitched."Fine. Great! If you can't think straight, stay right here and figure it out on your own. When you cool off and realize where you messed up, then we'll talk."He

"There's no evidence that the food actually caused any harm, and I made sure they knew about your company's clean record."You'll be fined ten thousand dollars, and you'll have to suspend operations for two months. Given the pressure from my superiors, that's the lightest penalty I could get for you."Just sign the paperwork and admit you were at fault. Shirley will also post a statement supporting you. Once that's done, we can put this behind us and go home to get back to our lives."I sat on the couch, staring at the administrative penalty notice.Ten thousand dollars. A two-month shutdown. An admission of fault.I felt nothing but emptiness."Go back to the home where you can throw me under the bus whenever your childhood sweetheart needs saving?" I asked quietly.Jack's expression hardened, and his voice rose immediately."This again! I told you, Shirley was just doing her job. She saw something suspicious and reported it. Why can't you just let it go?"I held his gaze. I
