Chapter 3

Auteur: Hyacinth
For the next two days, I remained at the office organizing the Orion Corridor transfer. Every authorization, risk assessment, and port agreement had to be correct. The lights in my office stayed on through both nights, and everyone in the overseas division noticed.

They also talked about me in an employee group chat that excluded me.

According to them, I had embarrassed Adrian at the celebration and was now working desperately to earn his forgiveness. Others pointed out that my official salary was only five thousand dollars a month, while Adrian paid for my home, security, and lifestyle.

“She only became strategy director because she married the Don.”

“The group needs Moretti connections now. What does Mara offer besides paperwork?”

“I heard she slowed Adrian down when he started the business. The group would have expanded sooner without her.”

No one said these things to my face.

Sofia sent me screenshots of every message.

Two months earlier, Adrian had restored her position as liaison to the Moretti family. She was in Paris, but she still followed everything happening at headquarters.

She sent me a voice message.

“Mara, I understand why being married to a man like Adrian makes you insecure. He is a Don. There will always be younger, prettier women who understand how to support him.”

Her sympathy sounded carefully rehearsed.

“You spend all your time working, so people no longer see you as his wife. Men want warmth and understanding. They don’t want a woman who challenges their authority.”

I listened once and smiled.

“Then the overseas division no longer needs you. I’ll have Human Resources remove you from the project roster.”

Her reply came immediately.

“What do you mean?”

“You can spend all your time understanding men.”

I blocked her and continued printing the divorce agreement.

Adrian called less than ten minutes later.

“What did you say to Sofia?”

His anger was controlled, but unmistakable.

I arranged the printed pages. “She suggested women should focus on pleasing men. I thought the advice suited her.”

“Mara.”

His voice lowered when he said my name.

“Sofia finally agreed to return to the group. You threw a drink in my face at the celebration, yet she chose not to pursue the insult. I brought her to Paris so she could recover, and now you have upset her again.”

“She chose not to pursue my insult?”

“The drink was a mistake, but she wanted to help you. You humiliated her, and she still stepped back. You should do the same.”

I looked at the divorce agreement.

“When are you returning?”

“Tomorrow afternoon.”

“Good. We need to discuss the divorce.”

The line went silent.

“What did you say?”

“The agreement is ready. We can sign when you return.”

Adrian’s voice turned cold.

“How long are you planning to continue this?”

“I’m not continuing anything.”

“You want to end seven years of marriage because of one drink?”

“The drink helped me make the decision.”

Something struck the floor on his end, probably a chair.

“Jealousy and anger have limits,” he said. “I will let you be upset, and I will compensate you, but you cannot threaten divorce whenever you dislike my decisions.”

He still believed I was trying to force him to surrender.

Adrian could tolerate tears, arguments, and broken glasses because those reactions kept me within the boundaries he had chosen. Actually leaving would challenge the Don’s authority.

“The agreement will be in your office,” I said. “Remember to read it.”

“Fine. Don’t regret it.”

He ended the call.

I signed the final page and sent the documents to my attorney.

A new announcement appeared in the company group soon afterward.

Effective immediately, Mara Bellini was suspended as strategy director. Sofia Moretti would assume control of the overseas division and take responsibility for the Orion Corridor. She would also represent Valenti Holdings at Monday’s press conference.

No one objected.

Adrian knew I had spent thirty-nine days in Europe securing the project. He knew I had negotiated during the day and reviewed documents through the night until my stomach hurt.

He took my position and my project anyway.

He believed that once he removed what mattered most to me, I would apologize.

Our first coffee lasted forty minutes.Adrian did not ask me to return to New York. He listened while I explained why his apology could not repair the marriage we had already lost. When we left the café, he asked whether he could call me the following week.I agreed. For the next year, we lived on opposite sides of the Atlantic. Adrian returned to New York and rebuilt Valenti Holdings without Moretti financing. I remained in London, where Calder’s new logistics division opened routes through Rotterdam, Barcelona, and Athens. He called only when we had agreed he could. Some conversations lasted an hour, while others ended after a few minutes. Whenever he began telling me what I should do, I reminded him that I had not asked for an order. At first, he argued.Later, he stopped himself. The Moretti investigation ended with Matteo losing control of the family’s insurance division. Sofia avoided prison by cooperating with the Commission, but she was barred from working with any allied compa

Six months later, the first vessel operating under the completed Orion Corridor entered Marseille Harbor.Reporters gathered beside the terminal while representatives from Calder, the European Port Alliance, and the three participating governments waited for the opening ceremony. The route had already completed its trial period without losing a shipment or missing a security inspection.Evelyn stood beside me as the alliance chairman approached the microphone.“The Orion Corridor exists because one person refused to compromise its security structure,” he said. “Mara Bellini negotiated the original agreement, rebuilt it after the operating group changed, and protected it from financial and physical interference.”He invited me forward to open the terminal. When I finished speaking, Evelyn handed me a folder containing Calder’s proposal for a new European logistics division. I would serve as managing partner and hold an ownership stake in every route developed under it.“You have until t

Three days after the Commission hearing, I traveled to Genoa to supervise the first Orion shipment. The containers carried medical equipment and encrypted navigation systems. If the transfer succeeded, Calder would receive final approval to operate the route without any Valenti or Moretti companies. We were preparing to move the cargo when the security director entered the control room.“Customs has ordered us to hold the shipment.”I checked the authorization on his tablet. The document carried an official seal, but the officer who signed it had retired four months earlier.“Lock the eastern gate and suspend access to the loading system,” I said. “Send the document to port security and move the containers to the coast guard berth.”The director hesitated. “That will expose the alternate route.”“Anyone using a dead officer’s credentials already knows our original route.”Before he could answer, the cameras showed three trucks approaching the eastern gate. Their permits identified them

The Commission requested my testimony the following afternoon.I joined through Calder’s secure conference system. On the screen, Adrian sat at the center of a long table in New York. Sofia and Matteo Moretti were seated opposite him with their family attorney. Five Commission representatives occupied the remaining chairs.Adrian looked at me when the video connected, but the chairman began before he could speak.“Ms. Bellini, did Valenti Holdings possess the final mandate for the Orion Corridor?”“No. The European Port Alliance had approved the framework but reserved the right to select the operating group.”“Did you use Valenti funds to negotiate the transfer to Calder?”“The overseas division paid travel and legal expenses during the original negotiations. Calder reimbursed those costs before accepting the mandate.”I displayed the payment records and the alliance’s approval.Matteo leaned toward the microphone. “She used Valenti resources to build the project and took it when she b

By the following morning, the Genoese security cooperative had agreed to cover the southern route. The British underwriter still refused to approve the policy because the Morettis had submitted a report claiming Calder’s warehouses were vulnerable to organized crime.Evelyn placed the report on my desk.“They used confidential details from the original Valenti proposal.”Only four people had access to that version. Adrian and I were two of them. His legal director was the third, and Sofia had received access when Adrian placed her in charge of the overseas division.I called the underwriter and requested forty-eight hours to answer every allegation. Then I divided the report among Calder’s legal, security, and financial teams. Before noon, Adrian’s assistant arrived with an encrypted drive.“Mr. Valenti asked me to give this directly to you.”The drive contained internal correspondence between Sofia and her cousin, Matteo Moretti, who managed the insurer’s New York branch. Sofia had se

“We’re going to talk now,” Adrian said. Two Calder security officers stood near the reception desk, watching the Valenti guards. I stepped out of the elevator and kept several feet between us.“Not in the lobby.”Adrian seemed to take that as agreement. He sent his guards outside and followed me into an empty meeting room. When the door closed, he placed the divorce agreement on the table.“I removed Sofia from the overseas division,” he said. “Her access to Valenti Holdings has been suspended, and she will return to New York under supervision.”“That has nothing to do with our divorce.”“It has everything to do with it. You believed I chose her over you. I corrected the decision.”“You corrected it after she embarrassed you in front of the press.”His jaw tightened. “I came to London because of you.”Adrian moved closer, but I stepped behind a chair before he could touch me.“You gave away my office, my position, and a project I spent more than a month negotiating. You did it because
