Chapter 4

Auteur: Hyacinth
By replacing me with Sofia, Adrian expected to force me into submission. If I withdrew the divorce request and apologized, he would return my office, title, and place at the press conference.

His message arrived soon afterward.

“You still have time to admit you were wrong.”

I did not reply. I silenced my phone and went to work.

When I reached headquarters, I found my belongings outside my office. My books, personal files, and coffee mug had been packed into boxes. Only my wedding photograph remained, carefully placed on a cabinet beside the window.

Sofia sat behind my desk, reviewing the overseas division’s personnel list.

“Sorry, Mara. Adrian gave me this office.”

She pointed toward a storage room near the restrooms.

“Administration can turn that into a temporary workspace for you. It’s small, but it should be enough.”

I ignored her and looked at Adrian.

He had not slept. His eyes were bloodshot, but his expression remained controlled. He believed that seeing the consequences of my disobedience would make me surrender.

“Sofia is right,” he said. “She controls the overseas division now.”

“I saw the announcement.”

“This is temporary. Withdraw the divorce request, and everything can return to normal.”

He sounded as though he were offering me one final chance.

“And if I don’t?”

His gaze hardened.

“Then you need time to understand what you will have without me.”

Sofia leaned back in my chair, smiling.

I crossed the room and picked up our wedding photograph.

We had married before Adrian became Don. There had been no media, allied families, or Valenti elders, only a small restaurant in Brooklyn where he placed a ring on my finger.

We had been happy in that photograph.

Adrian watched me and mistook my silence for hesitation.

“Mara, withdraw the divorce. After the press conference, we can restore your position. I’ll move Sofia to another office.”

I dropped the photograph into the trash.

“I don’t need this either.”

The room fell silent, and Adrian’s composure finally cracked.

“Mara.”

I took my encrypted personal computer from the drawer. Every file belonging to Valenti Holdings remained on its servers. Calder’s legal team had already reviewed the Orion transfer, and the new authorization process had begun.

I was leaving with none of Adrian’s property.

As I reached the door, he called after me.

“If you walk out today, don’t expect me to offer you the same opportunity again.”

I looked back at him.

“Thank you for the warning.”

Then I left.

Valenti Holdings held its Orion Corridor press conference that evening. I did not attend.

Before the event began, I joined a final video meeting with the European Port Alliance as Calder Global’s new head of European strategy.

At the same time, reporters, investors, and representatives of several allied families filled the ballroom at Valenti headquarters. The event was being broadcast across the city.

Sofia entered in a white dress with her arm linked through Adrian’s. She smiled as though she had already become the true leader of the project.

Adrian wore a dark gray suit. His face remained calm, but his attention moved repeatedly across the audience.

He was waiting for me.

He probably believed I would arrive before the presentation, apologize, and accept the position he decided to return.

The host handed him the microphone.

“Thank you for joining Valenti Holdings tonight,” Adrian began. “We are here to announce the Orion Corridor, which will connect our warehousing and security networks in New York, Marseille, and Genoa.”

A financial reporter in the front row stood.

“Mr. Valenti, are you certain you are announcing the Orion Corridor?”

“Of course.”

The reporter raised his tablet.

“Calder Global released an official statement minutes ago. The European Port Alliance has granted them the final mandate, and Mara Bellini is listed as project director.”

Voices spread through the ballroom.

Adrian’s assistant rushed onto the stage and showed him a phone.

“Boss, it’s true,” he whispered, close enough for the microphones to catch every word.

“The Orion Corridor has been transferred to Calder Global. Ms. Bellini resigned.”

Our first coffee lasted forty minutes.Adrian did not ask me to return to New York. He listened while I explained why his apology could not repair the marriage we had already lost. When we left the café, he asked whether he could call me the following week.I agreed. For the next year, we lived on opposite sides of the Atlantic. Adrian returned to New York and rebuilt Valenti Holdings without Moretti financing. I remained in London, where Calder’s new logistics division opened routes through Rotterdam, Barcelona, and Athens. He called only when we had agreed he could. Some conversations lasted an hour, while others ended after a few minutes. Whenever he began telling me what I should do, I reminded him that I had not asked for an order. At first, he argued.Later, he stopped himself. The Moretti investigation ended with Matteo losing control of the family’s insurance division. Sofia avoided prison by cooperating with the Commission, but she was barred from working with any allied compa

Six months later, the first vessel operating under the completed Orion Corridor entered Marseille Harbor.Reporters gathered beside the terminal while representatives from Calder, the European Port Alliance, and the three participating governments waited for the opening ceremony. The route had already completed its trial period without losing a shipment or missing a security inspection.Evelyn stood beside me as the alliance chairman approached the microphone.“The Orion Corridor exists because one person refused to compromise its security structure,” he said. “Mara Bellini negotiated the original agreement, rebuilt it after the operating group changed, and protected it from financial and physical interference.”He invited me forward to open the terminal. When I finished speaking, Evelyn handed me a folder containing Calder’s proposal for a new European logistics division. I would serve as managing partner and hold an ownership stake in every route developed under it.“You have until t

Three days after the Commission hearing, I traveled to Genoa to supervise the first Orion shipment. The containers carried medical equipment and encrypted navigation systems. If the transfer succeeded, Calder would receive final approval to operate the route without any Valenti or Moretti companies. We were preparing to move the cargo when the security director entered the control room.“Customs has ordered us to hold the shipment.”I checked the authorization on his tablet. The document carried an official seal, but the officer who signed it had retired four months earlier.“Lock the eastern gate and suspend access to the loading system,” I said. “Send the document to port security and move the containers to the coast guard berth.”The director hesitated. “That will expose the alternate route.”“Anyone using a dead officer’s credentials already knows our original route.”Before he could answer, the cameras showed three trucks approaching the eastern gate. Their permits identified them

The Commission requested my testimony the following afternoon.I joined through Calder’s secure conference system. On the screen, Adrian sat at the center of a long table in New York. Sofia and Matteo Moretti were seated opposite him with their family attorney. Five Commission representatives occupied the remaining chairs.Adrian looked at me when the video connected, but the chairman began before he could speak.“Ms. Bellini, did Valenti Holdings possess the final mandate for the Orion Corridor?”“No. The European Port Alliance had approved the framework but reserved the right to select the operating group.”“Did you use Valenti funds to negotiate the transfer to Calder?”“The overseas division paid travel and legal expenses during the original negotiations. Calder reimbursed those costs before accepting the mandate.”I displayed the payment records and the alliance’s approval.Matteo leaned toward the microphone. “She used Valenti resources to build the project and took it when she b

By the following morning, the Genoese security cooperative had agreed to cover the southern route. The British underwriter still refused to approve the policy because the Morettis had submitted a report claiming Calder’s warehouses were vulnerable to organized crime.Evelyn placed the report on my desk.“They used confidential details from the original Valenti proposal.”Only four people had access to that version. Adrian and I were two of them. His legal director was the third, and Sofia had received access when Adrian placed her in charge of the overseas division.I called the underwriter and requested forty-eight hours to answer every allegation. Then I divided the report among Calder’s legal, security, and financial teams. Before noon, Adrian’s assistant arrived with an encrypted drive.“Mr. Valenti asked me to give this directly to you.”The drive contained internal correspondence between Sofia and her cousin, Matteo Moretti, who managed the insurer’s New York branch. Sofia had se

“We’re going to talk now,” Adrian said. Two Calder security officers stood near the reception desk, watching the Valenti guards. I stepped out of the elevator and kept several feet between us.“Not in the lobby.”Adrian seemed to take that as agreement. He sent his guards outside and followed me into an empty meeting room. When the door closed, he placed the divorce agreement on the table.“I removed Sofia from the overseas division,” he said. “Her access to Valenti Holdings has been suspended, and she will return to New York under supervision.”“That has nothing to do with our divorce.”“It has everything to do with it. You believed I chose her over you. I corrected the decision.”“You corrected it after she embarrassed you in front of the press.”His jaw tightened. “I came to London because of you.”Adrian moved closer, but I stepped behind a chair before he could touch me.“You gave away my office, my position, and a project I spent more than a month negotiating. You did it because
