I stood at the stove, cooking myself some scrambled eggs for lunch. I had rose early and Scott had driven me to get some much-needed groceries for our apartment. He had left to head to work as I put the food away and cooked for my rumbling stomach.

A quick knock at the door drew my attention away from what I was doing. I walked over and opened the door to find no one there. Confused, I glanced around and noticed the note taped to our door from our landlord.

I pulled it off and read the official

“You’re making a mountain out of an anthill.” Preston moved toward the door and, in a panic, I sprintedaway toward the staircase. I rounded the corner and went up a couple stairs when I heard their voicesagain.“You don’t want me to choose between you and her,” Preston stated, his voice having an edge as I heard dishes clinking. The sink water turned on a second later. “Well why don’t I?” Ally asked with massive attitude. “Are you saying I’m gonna lose to her?”The dishes clinked while I could hear water splashing. “Don’t put words in my mouth.” “Well which is it then? Which one of us do you want?” I leaned against the wall, my forehead touching the cool wall as I held my breath for his answer. The water turned off and a second later Preston spoke. “You’re my girlfriend, she’s my roommate. You mean different things.”I shook my head, mentally cursing as I hurried up the stairs. Screw Preston and his stupid gorgeous hair. We meant different things. I was just his roommate. I was exact

I ended up catching the bus and going over to my friend Tricia's house. She wasn’t home, but she had given me a key a long ago when I had been with Scott. She had wanted me to have a safe place to go whenever needed.I stayed at her house, internally brewing over Preston until she came home and I unloaded the entire story upon her.She looked at me with a thoughtful expression as she wound her long blonde hair around her fingers. “You know, they have that saying distance makes the heart grow fonder.”I blew out a breath as I leaned back into the couch in her living room. After my morning and afternoon of thinking, I had come to the same conclusion. I needed to move out. I needed to put some distance between Preston and I. We were too close, too always there. “I kind of thought the same thing,” I confessed. “Girl!” she squealed as she slapped my thigh. “You can stay here!”I cocked an eyebrow at her. “You and Fred are getting married next month. The last thing I want is to live with new

His eyes suddenly shot open. He stared at me in the darkness as he very slowly raised his hand andcupped my face. I turned into it, my heart pounding at his touch. His hands slid onto my arms and hepulled me down toward him. He pulled me beside him and I voluntarily laid down beside him in his bed.He pulled the blankets over me as he held me safely and tightly in his arms against him. He kissed thetop of my head and I melted within.“Stay with me, Kate,” he whispered. Those simple, innocent words killed me inside. I would give nearly anything to stay right here, with thisman, forever.“You have a girlfriend,” I reminded him.“You’re the one I want,” he mumbled, his voice heavy with sleep. He shook slightly with laughter. “I’m asong.”I tilted my slightly upwards so I could see him. I studied his defined jaw with slight amount of stubble onit. He wet his full, red lips with his tongue and butterflies took flight in my stomach. How badly I wantedthose lips on mine, his tongue agai

I stood dumbfounded in front of her. I had only met Aaron a handful of times, and none of those time had I ever given him my number. Realization dawned on me that it had to have been Preston who had given Aaron my number. Why had Preston told Aaron to call me, and not his girlfriend? His words blew into the forefront of my mind.“I thought I was going to die, and I thought of you, Kate.”I stared at Ally, unwilling to tell her the truth. Instead, I spit out the first lie I could think of. “I gave it to him once a while ago at one of Preston’s boxing matches.”She eyed me as though she wasn’t sure if she wanted to believe me or not. “Well next time when something happens to my boyfriend, will someone please inform me a little quicker?” “Of course,” I quickly assured her. “I’m sorry.”She gave me a tight smile as she waved her hand at me as though to brush it away. “I’m sure everyone was just wound up in the heat of the moment. Lord knows I know about heat, honey.” She laughed the high-p

“A shoe?” I clarified.Preston nodded as he looked up toward the ceiling. “Yeah. It was the sole survivor.” He shook with held in laughter until it burst out of him like a volcano erupting. The sound of his laugh slowly tugged thecorners of my mouth upward, butterflies swirling in delight in my stomach.“You are horrible,” I laughed out.“Maybe,” Preston responded as he turned back to me. “But I’m still alive.”I stared at him, knowing he had no idea how immensely grateful I was of that fact.---Preston came home later that day. I called into work to stay with him. I drove his car home to the condo. It was quite terrifying, as I hadn’t driven in months. Thankfully, we got home without any incidents. He wrapped his arm around my shoulders as I helped him walk into the condo. He went straight for thecouch and laid down, kicking his feet up. I pulled his shoes off for him as he arranged the pillow behindhis head.Preston had somehow escaped the roof collapse with only minor injuries.

  • In Love With The Wrong Man    CHAPTER 79

I went to work at Kiki’s over the weekend, and to my horror Scott came in both days. He must have figured out I was working weekends, as the other waitresses commented that he hadn’t been in all week. I refused to wait on his table, and besides his constant glare, I had no contact with him.I came home Sunday night to find a note from Preston informing me he was covering another fireman’s shift and would be gone overnight. It wasn’t unusual for him to work overnight, but I always hated it. The condo was always too quiet and lonely. Tonight though was an exception. Brock was still visiting, and he seemed eager to unload his adventures with someone. After a long dinner of listening to his recent dart competition, I headed up to bed.--I slowly opened my eyes, unsure why I was awoken. I rolled over, trying to go back to sleep when I heard the thumping. It sounded like something banging against the condo. I slowly sat up in bed, glancing around my dark bedroom when the doorbell chimed repe
