Chapter 1

Author: Jojo
Five years ago, Moon Xavier took control of the Xavier family from her father with ruthless determination. She forced her father to give up his power because she wanted to marry Yale Xander, a man from an ordinary family.

But on the way to their wedding, they got into a car accident.

Moon protected Yale from the impact and suffered severe injuries. The doctors could not save her.

Yale was devastated. In just three days, he made dozens of attempts to end his life.

One time, he cut his wrist with a sharpened stone, and bright red blood pooled on the floor.

Cody Xavier could not stand to see him suffer anymore. He went to the hospital room and told him the truth. “Moon isn’t dead! She survived, but she lost her memory.

“Justin took advantage of the situation and pushed himself on her. He convinced her that he was the man she loved and the one who understood her best.”

Yale had been numb with despair, but his eyes suddenly lit up. He grabbed Cody tightly by the sleeve. “Then, take me to her! I’ll tell her the truth!

“Or you can tell her for me!”

Cody looked away.

Yale sensed that something was wrong. His voice grew softer. “Is there a problem?”

Cody looked troubled. “Justin’s my best friend!

“He’s loved Moon for years. He finally has a chance to be with her. How can I help you break them up?

“Besides, Justin is the heir of the Mercer family, while your dad is just a farmer. Anyone can see that he and my sister are a better match. I’m doing this for your own good. What good can come from a man trying to move up in the world through a woman?”

Yale stared at the man who had once promised to protect him for the rest of his life.

After a long silence, Yale finally said, “He’s your friend, and I’m not?”

“Don’t try to guilt-trip me!” Cody snapped. He paused for a moment and said, “I’ll find a way to get you a job as a servant in the Xavier household. You can figure out the rest yourself. Is that good enough?”

Yale said without hesitation, “Yes.”

He turned down an offer from one of the best hospitals overseas and stayed in the Xavier household as a servant. He did every dirty, exhausting job they gave him and watched Moon get close to one lover after another.

The first time he tried to stop Moon, he told her everything. He had been full of hope that she would remember him. Instead, the butler, Liam Carter, dragged him outside and slapped him ninety-nine times. His face was almost unrecognizable afterward.

The second time, they had him committed to a psychiatric hospital because they thought he was insane. When he finally got out, he was painfully thin.

The third time, Moon had been drinking, and she dragged him into bed with her.

Yale tried to push her away, but Moon only gave him a cold smile. “You went to all this trouble to get my attention. Isn’t this what you wanted?

“Fine. You can have it.”

After that terrible night, Yale became one of Moon’s many lovers.

Moon was kind and generous to her other lovers, but she looked down on Yale. She also let Justin make his life miserable.

The day Justin kicked Yale down the stairs, Yale broke both legs. He was in terrible pain, but Moon did not even look at him. Instead, she turned to Justin and proposed to him.

“The others are just for fun. You’re the only one I’ll marry.

“I agreed to get treatment for my memory loss. But even if I remember everything, I won’t marry a man like him.”

Cody frowned. “That’s it?

“Hmph! Looks like you don’t care about my sister that much after all. I knew it. Justin is the only man good enough for her.”

Yale closed his eyes to hide the sadness.

It was not just because of that.

Once his legs had healed enough for him to walk again, Yale cried. Even then, he still refused to give up.

When he passed Moon’s study, he heard her talking to Justin.

“Moon, you never lost your memory. Why did you lie to Yale? Why keep him around just to punish him?”

Moon sat behind the desk. Her fingers tapped lightly against the surface with cold fingertips. “The day of the accident, Yale got out of the car and left me inside. The car could have exploded at any moment.

“My dad was right. A man like him doesn’t deserve to be my husband. But I don’t want to let him go just for him to chase after other women.

“These five years were his punishment.”

Yale stood outside the study. His mind went completely blank.

Moon had not lost her memories! She had only been angry because she thought he had abandoned her!

But he had not!

After the accident, Yale used his bare hands to clear the debris off Moon. His fingers were cut badly.

He dragged Moon away from the danger and shouted for someone to call an ambulance.

Yale only breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Cody arrive. Then, he passed out.

Why had Moon misunderstood him?

He almost rushed into the study to explain everything.

Just then, Justin said, “How do you know he abandoned you?”

“Cody told me.”

Moon’s eyes shone with conflicting emotions. She was in pain, but she also seemed to take satisfaction in getting her revenge. “Cody is Yale’s closest friend. He would never make something like that up.”

It seemed Cody was behind everything.

Yale went completely still. Suddenly, he had no strength left.

Moon did not believe him. She had spent five years punishing and humiliating him.

Even his best friend had betrayed him.

How could he keep going?

When Cody was right in front of him, Yale wanted to ask him why he had done it.

He thought, ‘I know Justin grew up with you. Still, I went to school with you for ten years.

‘You and Justin have always been close. But I once saved you from a group of troublemakers. I even rushed into a bar for you and hit the man who was hurting you with a beer bottle.

‘Moon and I only met because of you.

‘Why did you do this to me?!’

Yale wanted to ask that, but in the end, he only said, “Yes. I guess I don’t care about her that much.

“I’m tired. I just want to leave.”

Cody froze. He was about to say something else when they heard a noise behind them.

Moon walked through the door. She had just taken off her cream-colored coat and held it over one arm. Her cold gaze fell on Yale. “You’re leaving?”

“I’m fine.”Yale looked at Elena in gratitude.Elena let out a sigh of relief and turned to Moon. “Ms. Xavier, I’ve spent the past few days gathering evidence against you.“You may have had Kingsley under your control, but I’ve brought everything you’ve done to light. You’ll have to pay the price for it.”Moon looked at Elena’s hand, which was still holding Yale’s tightly. A bitter smile crossed her lips. “Yes. I brought this on myself.”“Moon, what are you talking about?”Cody rushed into the room. “It’s just some evidence. It’s just a lawsuit. What’s there to be afraid of?”His voice grew quieter under Moon’s tired gaze.“I put him through five years of suffering. Five whole years, I was the one who tormented him.“I’m willing to accept whatever punishment I deserve. Cody, you should take care of yourself too.”Cody trembled. His usually straight back suddenly slumped.Yale had no interest in hearing their regrets. He left the hospital with Elena.Yale noticed faint dark

Yale knew Moon would not give up easily. That was why he refused to let Ian come with him when he went out.Halfway, everything went black. When Yale opened his eyes again, he was in a hospital room.Moon sat on the hospital bed. Her face looked a little pale as she stared straight at him. “Yale…”“Ms. Xavier, is this the only way you know how to get someone to come see you?” Yale asked with a mocking smile.Moon sighed and reached out to him, but then she noticed the marks on his hands that had not completely healed. She froze.“What? Can’t bear to look, can you? Didn’t you do this to me yourself?” Yale raised his hands and held them in front of her.“You brought me here without my consent. Are you going to apologize again?“Do you really think an apology can erase everything you did to me? Can it bring my father back?”Moon swayed. “I know an apology won’t change anything, but… Yale, it was my fault that I didn’t believe you.“I’m willing to make up for what I did, but I

Elena’s family owned properties all over the world, including several in Kingsley.Yale could not say no to Ian’s pleas, so he agreed to stay at the villa again. When Yale returned to the villa, Elena was still away.He was a little worried about her, but he did not want to disturb her by calling her. After a restless night, Yale was woken by a noise.“Who’s outside?”Yale went downstairs. The servant looked like she was about to cry.“There’s a gentleman here. He insists on seeing you.”‘A gentleman?’ Yale thought.Yale was silent for a moment. “Let him in.”The servant hesitated before she opened the door. Cody walked in.“Yale, you’re really okay!“You scared me to death! I thought you…”Cody’s eyes were teary. He kept repeating the same words. “Thank God, you’re okay!“Come with me to see Moon.”He reached out to grab his arm.Yale shook him off. “Why should I go see her?”Cody froze. “She shot herself because of you…”“She deserved it.”Cody could not accept tha

At a cemetery in Kingsley, Yale stood in front of his father’s grave with a bouquet of white chrysanthemums in his hands. “Dad, I’m here. I came to see you.“Are you doing okay up there?”Several bodyguards stood behind him. They kept a close watch on their surroundings.Elena had wanted to come with him to visit the grave, but she got caught up with other matters after they arrived in Kingsley. She had still insisted on coming, but Yale refused. “If you’re worried about me, just send a few bodyguards with me.“You’ve already done so much for me. I’d feel terrible if you drop everything just to stay with me.”Elena could not talk him out of it, so she did as he asked.Yale wiped the gravestone one more time before he stood up.As he walked toward the exit, he saw a familiar figure at the cemetery entrance. The woman had lost a lot of weight. Her features looked much sharper, and her eyes focused on him. She looked like she was about to cry. “Yale…”“Disappointed to see me ali

Yale soon pulled himself together.Moon and Cody had hurt him deeply on his birthday. But Elena and Ian were different. They treated him with nothing but genuine kindness. They had no bad intentions. He decided to be just as sincere with them.“I’m just too happy.” Yale wiped away his tears and smiled. “I made my wish. Let’s eat the cake!”Ian was simple and easygoing. He believed Yale and cheered happily. “Delicious cake! Elena learned how to make it just for you!”Elena, however, noticed something was wrong. She looked at him. After they sang the birthday song and finished the cake, it was very late.Ian kept yawning, but he insisted on bunking with Yale. One look from Elena was enough to scare him away.“Why are you being so mean?” he muttered and walked away.Elena pretended not to hear him and walked over to Yale.Yale was still smiling. “Is there something you…”“Were you thinking about your father?”Yale’s smile froze. He looked a little helpless. “You are still as

A hand suddenly covered Ian’s mouth.“Mmph! Mmph!” He tried to protest.Elena pulled him back with one hand and smiled at Yale. “Sorry. You know how my brother is. He’s not exactly the brightest.”Ian finally broke free. “Who are you calling stupid?”“Shut up!” Elena narrowed her eyes at him. Her voice carried a hint of warning. “Do you want to lose your allowance?”Ian immediately backed down and raised both hands in surrender.Once Elena let go of him, Ian straightened up and said somberly, “Yale, I was just rambling.“Elena definitely did not lose sleep over you. She definitely did not stay single for you—”“Ian!” Elena was already starting to regret bringing him here.Yale, however, suddenly laughed. “Your Westorian is really good now, Ian.”Ian lifted his chin with pride. “Of course! I’m a natural.“But you’re a great teacher too…”Elena watched the sadness in Yale’s eyes fade, and her tense shoulders slowly relaxed. She suddenly felt that maybe Ian’s antics were not
