With long strides that were almost a run, Samar approached her uncle Haj Helmy’s fabric shop, where her brother Waleed worked as an accountant.

As soon as she reached the shop, she found numerous people coming and going.

The place was crowded.

The store was one of the largest and most important fabric shops in all of Sayyida Zeinab.

She walked directly toward the front of the shop.

There she spotted her blue car parked a few meters away.

That meant Waleed was still inside and hadn’t gone anywhere with her car.

Her phone began ringing.

It rang several times, but she couldn’t hear it because of the noise surrounding her.

She finally noticed it and started rummaging through her handbag to find it.

It kept ringing without stopping.

It was probably her friend Lamia, calling to hurry her up.

A loud scream escaped Samar the moment she collided with something solid she hadn’t seen because she was busy searching for her phone and because of the crowd around her.

Before she knew it, she was sprawled across the ground, groaning in pain.

Instinctively, she placed a hand against her lower back after the fall.

Then she screamed even louder when a woman accidentally stepped on her foot without seeing her.

Omar immediately bent down beside her, worried.

“I’m so, so sorry! Are you okay, Miss?”

She raised her eyes toward the voice.

A young man was looking at her with concern and caution.

She didn’t recognize him.

He appeared to be one of the customers.

This was the first time she had ever seen him.

For a moment, she forgot the pain in her foot and back as she stared at him admiringly.

She quickly came back to herself and cleared her throat awkwardly.

She tried to stand, but cried out in pain.

Omar immediately reached out to help her.

She forced herself to stand and brushed the dust from her clothes.

Meanwhile, he gathered the belongings that had fallen from her handbag.

He apologized again gently, his voice calm.

“I’m sorry again. I really wasn’t paying attention. As you can see, it’s pretty crowded.”

“No, it’s okay. I’m fine now. I wasn’t paying attention either…”

He smiled calmly.

His perfectly white teeth showed, along with faint dimples in his cheeks.

“You were coming in to buy something, right? I work here. Would you like me to help you if you’re looking for something specific?”

She remembered why she had come.

Since he had said he worked there, she decided to ask about her brother.

Besides, although this was her first time seeing him, she came here almost every morning to give her uncle his insulin injection for his diabetes.

She adjusted a few strands of her brown hair and answered calmly,

“I was actually looking for Waleed, my brother. Could you tell him Samar, his sister, is outside?”

He was about to answer, but Waleed interrupted him.

The moment he spotted Samar, he approached her deliberately with an irritating tone, pretending not to know why she was there—even though he knew perfectly well she had come for the car he had taken without asking.

“What’s up, Samoura? Why are you here so early? Your uncle’s injection isn’t due for another three hours…”

He succeeded in irritating her.

Whenever Youssef found an opportunity to belittle his son, he took it without the slightest guilt, never even considering that Omar was his only son. “You’re kidding yourself, Salwa,” Nadia said bitterly. “Your brother has been gone for a week. I’m certain your father said something that hurt him. I know my son. Omar is sensitive, and every time he fought with Youssef, he wanted to leave the house. I was always the one who stopped him, begged him not to go, and he listened to me because he didn’t want to hurt me.” She continued, “Why didn’t you look for him? Fine, we all know your father is heartless, but you didn’t even look for your own brother, Salwa! At the very least, you could have called me and told me.” Salwa answered sadly, guilt weighing heavily on her. “I’m sorry, Mom. I swear I was worried about you. And I didn’t just sit around doing nothing. Hassam and I searched everywhere. We went to every relative we thought he might have gone to and contacted every friend we kn
