Chapter 3

作者: Echo
"Yeah, doesn't she feel out of place?"

I kept my head down like a walking corpse, oblivious to everything around me.

"She's walking toward Leonora."

"Is she here to cause trouble? This is a Don's funeral."

A pair of old, mud-caked cowboy boots entered my line of sight.

They were rough, the leather heavily worn, as if telling a story of how much wilderness they had crossed.

"Leonora, do you recognize me?"

A slightly weathered voice spoke.

It was very close. Right by my ear.

I slowly looked up.

Before me was the weather-beaten face of an old woman.

Her skin was dry and wrinkled, her temples gray, but beneath her drooping eyelids, her gaze was piercing.

Amidst the luxuriously dressed mourners, she wore a grossly out-of-place, old flannel shirt.

One arm hooked through a faded leather bag, the other clutching a battered cowboy hat.

"I'm Martha. The mother-in-law you've never met."

I stared at her blankly.

My exhausted brain struggled to process, connect, fire... my eyes suddenly widened:

"Martha?"

Martha nodded slowly.

"Good that you recognize me."

The Family's soldiers immediately closed in, trying to intervene.

"So it's the old Mrs. Vexille. Sigh, a mother burying her son. Our deepest condolences."

"It's good you're here. The family needs to support each other so Leonora and the girl aren't so alone."

Someone kindly offered to take Martha's bag. She slowly shook her head, refusing.

She casually swatted away the gun barrel peeking from a soldier's waistband.

She looked at Silas's portrait, then looked straight at me.

"The day I heard of my son's death, I drove overnight from my farm in Texas, just to tell everyone one thing."

She stared at me, her expression resolute, enunciating every single word.

"You are the one who murdered my son."

After dropping that line, Martha turned and left. No one could stop her.

She appeared out of nowhere.

And vanished just as quickly.

As if she existed solely to deliver that one sentence.

Everyone exchanged looks, then rushed to comfort me.

"Leonora, the old lady is probably just delirious from grief. Ignore her. You can't afford to be upset right now."

"Yeah, she's out of the loop and doesn't know the facts. She probably heard some rumors and took them seriously. We'll have the boys handle it."

"I've never even seen the Don's mother before. Shows up right when he dies... is she here for the inheritance?"

"I haven't even heard of her! Leonora, she said you two had never met. Are you sure that was really Silas's mother?"

I didn't speak. I was so weak I could barely stand.

An elder handed me a glass of red wine.

"Alright, alright, stop asking questions. The most important thing is to finish the funeral and let Leonora rest. The Family will handle everything else."

I looked down, taking a few sips of the wine. My head cleared a little.

Yes.

Martha was indeed Silas's biological mother.

Eight years ago, when Silas and I got married, I saw her for the first time on a video call.

When Silas was fourteen, she couldn't take the mob life anymore and divorced his father.

She left everything behind to run a farm in Texas. They were estranged for years.

After the previous Don died and Silas took power, he finally tracked her down and tried to bring her to New York to retire.

She refused. She said when she left, she swore she would never step foot in New York again.

Over the years, Silas flew out to Texas to see her twice.

And I only ever spoke to her briefly on video calls once a year, on April's birthday.

Right now, I was drowning in deep confusion and bewilderment.

I didn't understand why this tough farm woman, who swore never to return, had suddenly traveled all this way.

Why did she suddenly say something like that to me?

In my grief, it made zero sense...

After the funeral, Martha didn't leave New York.

She stayed.

Naturally, she didn't stay at the estate. She checked into a rundown motel.

Late at night, the bright moon hung high, watching over the joys and sorrows of the world.

I sat alone, looking at Silas's belongings and wiping my tears, and made a decision.

No matter why she came.

The child.

The money.

Or some misunderstanding.

She was still my husband's mother. April's grandmother.

I couldn't just ignore her and leave her on the streets.

It was a foggy day.I brought April to the private airfield to see Martha off.She was still wearing that old shirt, hooking the leather bag on one arm and clutching the cowboy hat in the other.Only now, her posture seemed much more hunched than when she arrived.April was playing nearby on a waiting room chair.Martha looked at me indifferently."I did it for April's sake."That morning, she had ultimately deleted the email and didn't hand over the evidence. She told the agents she had tried to record me confessing but failed to get anything useful. The agents scolded her harshly and left. Now, she looked at me from under her drooping eyelids."That night, you braved the hurricane to come see me. You guessed I hadn't looked at the cameras? You guessed I hadn't given the email to the FBI yet, so you came for one last desperate gamble?"I nodded, admitting it."Before, you couldn't even step into the pool room, let alone look at the water. That's a mother's natural fragility. So yes, I

Six months ago, I overheard Silas dealing with the traitor who set up that ambush on us.He said, "Force-feed him the drugs. Make it look like a suicide."The name of the drug he mentioned was the exact same one my father supposedly took before he died."Impossible!"In the quiet room, Martha slammed her hand on the table, her face flushed red as she screamed at me."You're just twisting the facts to fit your narrative! How could you decide Silas was a murderer based on that one thing?!"I looked at her numbly."Of course I didn't. So, I started verifying.""I used every excuse to cross-check his whereabouts during the time those homeless men died. They all matched.""I suggested setting up a charity foundation for the homeless. The flash of disgust and repulsion on his face was unmistakable."Martha's furious roar tore through the long night."What does that prove?! You're working backward from the conclusion! You only saw what you wanted to see!"I nodded slowly."You're right. Those

The hurricane howled outside. I sat on the edge of the thermal pool, lost in thought for a long time.Half an hour later, I slowly stood up.First, I went to check on April. She was sleeping soundly. I leaned down and kissed her forehead. Then I grabbed my car keys, opened the door, and walked out of the estate.I drove through the raging hurricane, through roads littered with debris, until I reached Martha's motel. The front desk was empty. I headed straight upstairs.I walked unhurriedly down the dim hallway and arrived at Martha's door.It was unlocked. She was sitting on the edge of the bed, a yellowed desk lamp turned on, her back to me as she looked at her phone.I walked in and stood behind her.Martha whipped around. When she saw my face, she actually calmed down."I knew you would come."I murmured an acknowledgment and sat in the room's only chair.Martha stood up, glanced out the window, and frowned slightly."Ten minutes before you got here, I forwarded the email to the FBI

The estate was sold.Though the price was well below market value, the cash was more than enough for April and me to leave New York and live a quiet life for a very long time. Our last night before moving out was a hurricane night.April was fast asleep. The storm raged outside.I wandered slowly through the somewhat empty mansion, mapping out our future. My phone chimed. An encrypted email alert.I picked it up casually, then instantly froze. The sender was Silas. My eyes widened. Trembling, I opened it:[Leonora, if you are receiving this email, it means I haven't logged in for a month and triggered the scheduled send. It means something has happened to me.Leonora, I love you, but I need to apologize. I have a secret. Unfortunately, I can never tell you. It's too bloody, too brutal. It's a secret I am destined to take to my grave.Because of this secret, on one hand, I love you like a devoted husband. On the other, I live like a ghost, constantly paranoid that an enemy will come for

The second I opened the door, she pushed past me and stormed in.She tore through the house, frantically searching, flipping things over. Her face was flushed, her expression manic."What are you looking for?" I finally asked. She spun around, glaring at me."It was oleander, wasn't it?!"I pressed my lips together.Staring at her in silence. Her cloudy eyes burned with an intense fire, her voice trembling but every word sharp."The FBI told me you had no motive, no method. You had an airtight alibi. You had a ton of witnesses and evidence. No one could guarantee Silas would slip and perfectly knock himself out in the pool.""I thought about those words over and over these past few days. I obsessed over them until I almost went crazy. And then, last night, I remembered something. I remembered Silas when he was eight.""That year, he accidentally ate an oleander leaf. He suddenly went rigid, completely paralyzed. I was terrified. His eyes were darting around—he was fully conscious, but

Martha walked in, agitated. It was her first time inside the home where her son lived. It was obvious she was emotional, her hands clenched tight, her chest heaving. When her eyes swept past the pool room, she visibly shuddered and quickly looked away in terror.I walked to the bar, grabbed a glass, and poured her some whiskey. She shook her head, refusing it, eyeing me warily."If you have something to say, just say it."I pursed my lips.I pulled out my phone, made a call, and murmured a few words.A moment later, a video call came through.I answered and handed the phone to Martha. She looked at me in confusion."This is Silas's most trusted right-hand man, Leo. He knows the most about that incident with the homeless men you're talking about."Martha took the phone and looked at the man on the screen.Leo's steady voice came through."Mrs. Vexille, I saw you at the funeral last time. My deepest condolences.""I don't know why you're interested in that old incident, but the Boss's wi
