Chapter 2

作者: Echo
"My husband isn't bad either!" Victoria chimed in, pitching her voice higher.

"He brought me back a stunning pink diamond from the Paris auction. It's gorgeous. Come on, let's go to my place and I'll show you!"

Victoria was much younger than her husband. She constantly needed to prove how much he loved her to show she married for love, not money.

I smiled and shook my head.

"I'll pass. I need to take April back up for her bath. You guys go."

Victoria, who loved competing with me, immediately looked displeased.

"Didn't Silas just tell you to stay a little longer? My house is right next door. It won't take long. You can't even humor me this once?"

At 11:10, I walked out of the parlor.

At 11:15, I caught a wildly running April on the lawn, dragging her toward the main house.

She resisted at first.

"Just five more minutes," she begged. "Mommy, five minutes, please?"

I flatly refused, telling her the bathwater was already drawn.

She reluctantly waved goodbye to her little friends one by one.

The wives sitting nearby watched with amusement, sharing a knowing smile with me.

At 11:18, as April and I walked down the second-floor hallway, we ran into Julian, one of the Capos, who had just finished some Family business.

He greeted me, his face flushing slightly.

April grabbed his hand, asking in a sweet voice when he would take her horseback riding again.

Simultaneously, I pushed open the master bedroom door.

At 11:19, April was still in the hallway talking to Julian.

When I called out "Silas" and got no answer, I walked into the pool room.

At 11:20, I screamed.

Silas was floating face-down in the water. He was dead.

A lot of people came to the funeral.

Bosses of various mafia families, political and business elites, even the police chief.

Everyone marveled that this terrifying Godfather had actually died in a mere accident.

People whispered amongst themselves.

"Such a ruthless guy. God is blind... how could a freak accident like this happen to him?"

"Silas just swallowed up the West Side a few years ago. His position as Don was ironclad this year. He even said he was going to spend more time with his wife and kid. Who would've thought..."

"They were so in love. How is Leonora going to survive this? She's already passed out several times these past few days."

"Even though Leonora runs an art gallery, she never touched the Family business. With Silas alive, she was a queen on a pedestal. It's going to be tough for her now."

"It's just such a freak accident. I heard he slipped and knocked himself out by the pool, and the water ran for 20 minutes before it slowly covered his mouth and nose. If he had woken up, or if Leonora had gone back to the room earlier, he could have been saved at any moment. Sigh, it's just fate!"

Amidst the rustling whispers, I sat pale and to the side, staring blankly at Silas's portrait.

For days, I had been drowning in absolute agony.

I cried until my heart broke, fainting over and over.

Anyone who saw me couldn't help but sigh.

The Family elders sat beside me, offering warm words of comfort.

Victoria walked over, her face full of guilt.

"Leonora, I'm so sorry. If you hadn't come to my house and wasted time, maybe... maybe Silas wouldn't have died!"

By the end, she covered her mouth and sobbed.

I shook my head mournfully.

"No, it's not your fault. It's mine."

"I was the one who asked him to start the water early. I was the one who forgot my phone, making him open the window to call me, which made him slip. I was the one who promised to be back by 11:00 but dawdled and was twenty minutes late."

"It's all my fault. I killed him..."

An elder quickly intervened.

"Leonora, you absolutely cannot think like that. A freak accident is out of anyone's control. Besides, the medical examiner and the police chief said it themselves—it was an accident. A highly improbable freak accident."

That day, when I screamed, Julian was the first to rush in.

Realizing what had happened, he immediately blocked April from entering and called the Family's private doctor.

After inspecting the scene and conducting interviews, the police chief roughly pieced together the timeline:

10:40: Silas turned on the pool valve and stepped out onto the balcony to talk to me.

After speaking, he turned back inside. The pool was large, leaving only a narrow walkway around it. He slipped on it.

The back of his head hit the edge of the pool. He fell into the water, unconscious.

10:40 - 11:00: The water slowly rose until it submerged his head.

11:00 - 11:05: After five minutes of drowning, Silas died of asphyxiation.

He never woke up; there were no signs of a struggle or water splashed out of the pool.

Because he never made a sound, the bodyguards on the first floor noticed nothing unusual.

11:20: I returned to the room and discovered the scene.

During this time, from when Silas showed his face on the balcony to when I returned, no outsiders entered the hallway, and there were no suspicious traces at the scene. It was ruled an accident.

Someone shook their head and sighed.

"It really proves the saying: When Death comes for you, no one can stop it... Wait, who is that at the door? Dressed like that at a funeral?"

It was a foggy day.I brought April to the private airfield to see Martha off.She was still wearing that old shirt, hooking the leather bag on one arm and clutching the cowboy hat in the other.Only now, her posture seemed much more hunched than when she arrived.April was playing nearby on a waiting room chair.Martha looked at me indifferently."I did it for April's sake."That morning, she had ultimately deleted the email and didn't hand over the evidence. She told the agents she had tried to record me confessing but failed to get anything useful. The agents scolded her harshly and left. Now, she looked at me from under her drooping eyelids."That night, you braved the hurricane to come see me. You guessed I hadn't looked at the cameras? You guessed I hadn't given the email to the FBI yet, so you came for one last desperate gamble?"I nodded, admitting it."Before, you couldn't even step into the pool room, let alone look at the water. That's a mother's natural fragility. So yes, I

Six months ago, I overheard Silas dealing with the traitor who set up that ambush on us.He said, "Force-feed him the drugs. Make it look like a suicide."The name of the drug he mentioned was the exact same one my father supposedly took before he died."Impossible!"In the quiet room, Martha slammed her hand on the table, her face flushed red as she screamed at me."You're just twisting the facts to fit your narrative! How could you decide Silas was a murderer based on that one thing?!"I looked at her numbly."Of course I didn't. So, I started verifying.""I used every excuse to cross-check his whereabouts during the time those homeless men died. They all matched.""I suggested setting up a charity foundation for the homeless. The flash of disgust and repulsion on his face was unmistakable."Martha's furious roar tore through the long night."What does that prove?! You're working backward from the conclusion! You only saw what you wanted to see!"I nodded slowly."You're right. Those

The hurricane howled outside. I sat on the edge of the thermal pool, lost in thought for a long time.Half an hour later, I slowly stood up.First, I went to check on April. She was sleeping soundly. I leaned down and kissed her forehead. Then I grabbed my car keys, opened the door, and walked out of the estate.I drove through the raging hurricane, through roads littered with debris, until I reached Martha's motel. The front desk was empty. I headed straight upstairs.I walked unhurriedly down the dim hallway and arrived at Martha's door.It was unlocked. She was sitting on the edge of the bed, a yellowed desk lamp turned on, her back to me as she looked at her phone.I walked in and stood behind her.Martha whipped around. When she saw my face, she actually calmed down."I knew you would come."I murmured an acknowledgment and sat in the room's only chair.Martha stood up, glanced out the window, and frowned slightly."Ten minutes before you got here, I forwarded the email to the FBI

The estate was sold.Though the price was well below market value, the cash was more than enough for April and me to leave New York and live a quiet life for a very long time. Our last night before moving out was a hurricane night.April was fast asleep. The storm raged outside.I wandered slowly through the somewhat empty mansion, mapping out our future. My phone chimed. An encrypted email alert.I picked it up casually, then instantly froze. The sender was Silas. My eyes widened. Trembling, I opened it:[Leonora, if you are receiving this email, it means I haven't logged in for a month and triggered the scheduled send. It means something has happened to me.Leonora, I love you, but I need to apologize. I have a secret. Unfortunately, I can never tell you. It's too bloody, too brutal. It's a secret I am destined to take to my grave.Because of this secret, on one hand, I love you like a devoted husband. On the other, I live like a ghost, constantly paranoid that an enemy will come for

The second I opened the door, she pushed past me and stormed in.She tore through the house, frantically searching, flipping things over. Her face was flushed, her expression manic."What are you looking for?" I finally asked. She spun around, glaring at me."It was oleander, wasn't it?!"I pressed my lips together.Staring at her in silence. Her cloudy eyes burned with an intense fire, her voice trembling but every word sharp."The FBI told me you had no motive, no method. You had an airtight alibi. You had a ton of witnesses and evidence. No one could guarantee Silas would slip and perfectly knock himself out in the pool.""I thought about those words over and over these past few days. I obsessed over them until I almost went crazy. And then, last night, I remembered something. I remembered Silas when he was eight.""That year, he accidentally ate an oleander leaf. He suddenly went rigid, completely paralyzed. I was terrified. His eyes were darting around—he was fully conscious, but

Martha walked in, agitated. It was her first time inside the home where her son lived. It was obvious she was emotional, her hands clenched tight, her chest heaving. When her eyes swept past the pool room, she visibly shuddered and quickly looked away in terror.I walked to the bar, grabbed a glass, and poured her some whiskey. She shook her head, refusing it, eyeing me warily."If you have something to say, just say it."I pursed my lips.I pulled out my phone, made a call, and murmured a few words.A moment later, a video call came through.I answered and handed the phone to Martha. She looked at me in confusion."This is Silas's most trusted right-hand man, Leo. He knows the most about that incident with the homeless men you're talking about."Martha took the phone and looked at the man on the screen.Leo's steady voice came through."Mrs. Vexille, I saw you at the funeral last time. My deepest condolences.""I don't know why you're interested in that old incident, but the Boss's wi
