Chapter 29

His words trailed off.

Nathan’s hands clenched. “No,” he muttered. Then louder and more desperate. “No. You don’t get to say ‘if.’ You have to save her. I don’t care what it takes. You need to do everything. You hear me?” He grabbed the man’s coat. “She’s all I have and if I lose her, I don’t think I will survive it.”

The doctor gently loosened his fingers. “We’re doing everything we can.”

As the doctor walked away, Nathan turned, rage and helplessness burning through him. He slammed his fist against the wall, the impact echoing through the corridor.

Behind them, a shadow leaned quietly against the far wall.

The crafty Mia.

Dressed in a conservative black coat, her dark eyes gleamed with spite as she observed the scene. A sly smile curved her lips, sinister and satisfied.

Her phone buzzed. She picked up on the first ring.

“How is the girl?” the caller asked.

“She’s in critical condition,” she said flatly, eyes still fixed on the scene before her.

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 36

Chapter 36The day they finally wheeled me out of the hospital, the air outside felt foreign. It was lighter, fresher, and yet there was a heaviness inside me that the breeze couldn’t touch. Ava was right there beside me, pushing my wheelchair towards her car with that protective determination in her eyes.... the kind that dared anyone to even breathe wrong in my direction. Not once during my stay had my adoptive mother, Mrs. Rivers, or my “sister” Cas come to see me. Not a single call. Not a single bouquet of flowers that wasn’t from strangers or Nathan. I wasn’t expecting warmth from them. I’d given up on that kind of hope years ago but some small, ridiculous part of me still thought they might come. Maybe out of duty, maybe just to keep up appearances. They didn’t.When Ava pulled up to my family’s house and helped me inside, I didn’t even have to go looking for them. My mother and Cas were in the living room, their faces already set like masks carved out of disdain.“Well,” my m

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 35

Chapter 35When I opened my eyes again, it felt like waking from a dream where all the colours were washed out.But what I saw next turned the world black. It was Jasper. He was sitting beside my bed like he belonged there, as though our shared history wasn’t tainted with betrayal, lies and a bullet to my side.I jolted upright.“What the hell are you doing here?”He smiled. The same smug, crooked smile that used to charm me, back when I didn’t know better.“Easy, sweetheart,” he said. “I came to see you.”I laughed bitterly. “See me? Who gave you that right? What made you feel that I would like to see a demon like you??? Huhhhh???”I looked towards the door, wishing for a nurse, a guard, anyone.“Relax,” he said. “I pulled some strings.”My skin crawled. “I don’t want you near me, Jasper. Your presence just makes me sick.”His expression faltered, just for a second. Then he plastered on a look of fake concern.“You shouldn’t be like that, Elena. I didn’t mean to shoot you. It was an

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 34

Chapter 34I was heartbroken. I felt shattered in places I didn’t know that I could break.Nathan’s words played in my head like a cruel echo. “I never cared for you. I was just using you...”I couldn’t believe it. I refuse to believe it.Didn’t I just see him yesterday? Didn’t he hold my hand like I was the last thing keeping him in this world? Why did he do this to me?I curled up in the hospital bed, knees tucked into my chest, hugging myself like I could hold all my broken pieces together. My chest hurt, my wound pulsed in rhythm with my sobs, but the ache in my heart swallowed everything else.Something must be wrong. This wasn’t Nathan. He wasn’t like Jasper. He wouldn’t be like Jasper.I reached for my phone and dialled Ava’s number with trembling hands. The moment I heard her voice, I broke.Tears fell faster than words. I couldn’t speak. All I could do was cry.“Leni? What happened? Talk to me!”I couldn’t mutter a single word.“Calm down, Leni... I don’t know what happened b

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 33

Chapter 33He sat in silence, eyes glassy with tears. The weight of the betrayal crushed his chest like a vice. Without wasting another moment, he sent the video to the unknown number.A few seconds later, the message was delivered. There was no reply. He stared at the phone for a long time. Then he packed his bags, each movement looking mechanical and robotic. He didn’t take much. Just the essentials. He also took a video on his camera before he left hoping that someday, Elena would see it.“Elena, if you ever see this, know that I did everything to keep you safe. I promise I’ll return when you’re stronger. I love you.”Then he was gone.--------------------------------------------Somewhere far from the hospital, in a dim room with monitors and dim lighting, a masked man watched the video Nathan had just sent. He leaned back in his chair and let out a long, sinister laugh.“Finally,” he whispered, his voice gravelly, distorted, chilling. “Elena is all mine. NO MORE COMPETITION. ”--

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 32

Chapter 32Nathan sat by Elena’s bedside, his eyes red and swollen, his fingers gently wrapped around hers. The rhythmic beeping of the monitors filled the sterile hospital room, but all Nathan could hear was the pounding of his own heart.Tears spilt freely down his cheeks as he stared at her pale face, her body still weak from the ordeal. He leaned closer, brushing a strand of hair from her forehead. “Maybe we were never destined to be together, Elena,” he whispered, his voice barely audible, trembling with heartbreak. “I saw this coming and that’s why I tried so hard to stay away from you but I couldn’t. You drew me in with every breath, every look, every word.”He brought her hand to his lips and kissed it softly, his tears wetting her skin. “Now I have to leave before you wake up. I know it’ll hurt you, but please... please find a place in your heart to forgive me.”He stood, hesitating at her side. His heart rebelled against every step away from her. When he reached the door, h

  • He chose My sister over me and I made him regret it for life   Chapter 31

Chapter 31And they looking at him.Nathan dropped to his knees at the edge of my bed like a man who had found God.His shoulders shook with sobs so violent that he couldn’t speak. He covered his mouth with one hand, the other reaching for mine like he was afraid that I would disappear again if he wasn’t quick enough.I watched him cry.And then I cried too.The sight of him. His vulnerability, his brokenness somehow made me feel alive. It felt real which made me feel connected to something outside this room of machines and pain.“Don’t cry,” I rasped, barely audible. I took off the oxygen mask so he could hear me.But he did, he kept on crying. He lifted my hand gently to his lips and pressed it against his cheek. His tears soaked my skin.“I’m sorry,” he choked out, voice raw and cracked. “I’m so sorry, Elena.”I blinked, but the tears blurred my vision. My chest ached, not from the wounds, but from the weight of everything between us.“I never should’ve come into your life,” he whi
