Chapter 2

Author: The Handsome Guy
Cole's POV

After freshening up, I sat with my phone and waited until 11:00 pm.

Giselle didn't call me or text me. Instead, Harry tagged me in a post on his social media account.

"You should know where to draw the line. You're going overboard if you keep this up."

He added an eye-roll emoji to the caption. A screenshot of my message where I told Giselle that I wanted to break up was attached to the post.

Countless comments flooded the post.

"I can't stand wimps like him who always ask to break up at the slightest inconvenience. Wow, I'm so scared."

"You're right! Does he think of himself as some sort of catch when he's just a bastard with no parents? Giselle's the only one who's willing to put up with him!"

My heart felt like it was being stabbed by a blade as I scrolled through the comments without replying to any of them. Not because the commenters were mocking me for not having parents. That was the truth. My heart ached because Giselle was liking all the comments.

I briefly closed my eyes before dialing her number. It didn't take long for her to pick up, as if she had been anticipating my call.

"Why did you like them?" I demanded.

"What?"

"I'm asking you why you liked those comments!" I roared, feeling as if the scar in the deepest part of my heart had been ripped open.

"You stood by and allowed them to call me a wimp," I shouted hoarsely, nearly losing my voice. "You just let them call me a bastard…"

"But they're just stating the truth," she answered gently, which made my questioning and shouting look like an utter joke.

The rest of my words died on my tongue. It felt as if someone was strangling me.

Giselle seemed to be pleased by my silence. "It's midnight, Cole. You should have calmed down by now, no matter how angry you were. It's your birthday tomorrow. I'll treat you to some fried chicken wings."

She spoke again before I could reject her. "Don't tell me that you're not going to go. You should tell me in person if you want to break up. You can't just end our five-year relationship through a text."

In the end, I agreed after giving it some thought. It wasn't because I still had lingering feelings for her. It was because she still had my belongings in her possession.

…

Giselle sent the restaurant's address to me at 1:00 pm the next day. It was a famous chicken wings restaurant in Orrislane. A reservation had to be made two weeks in advance to secure a table.

Although I had only mentioned it in passing last month, she had remembered.

Giselle updated me on the queue number every five minutes. It was the height of summer and was blazingly hot outside.

I typed and retyped my message several times before finally typing out a short reminder. "Don't get a heatstroke."

Giselle replied with a sticker of a cat giving a thumbs up.

My eyes stung as I stared at the cat. She had given it to me when we first started dating. Her smile had been so gentle when she patted the cat's head and said, "Although we're not living together, I've sent my little daughter to keep a close eye on you!"

Giselle bought food for the cat and called it her daughter. She said that I was its father, while she was its mother.

Later, the cat passed away after it was hit by a car. Blaming myself for failing to take care of it, I turned its pictures into stickers. Every time Giselle made me upset, she would send stickers of the cat apologizing and crying.

My heart softened as I stared at the cat sticker. I could feel my anger slowly fading away.

…

When Giselle informed me that there were only ten people left in the queue at 5:30 pm, I decided to head over to the restaurant before our number was called.

I watched as she and Harry shared a slice of cake in the dessert parlor next door from across the street. She sat on Harry's lap and let him fiddle around with her phone, letting him send a message to me every few minutes as she fed him spoonfuls of cake.

My vision blurred, though no wind touched my face. I looked down and rubbed my eyes before sending a message to her.

"I'm almost there."

Harry patted Giselle's behind after glancing at her phone. Only then did she languidly get off his lap.

"The drama king is finally coming," Harry said, sighing.

Giselle tugged on his sleeve and said, "I don't care what you call him in private, but you can't call him that to his face. He'll argue with me if you do."

Her movements were familiar and natural. Although her smile was gentle, my heart felt incredibly cold.

I stood in the shadows and waited for them to enter the chicken wings restaurant, only making my way over after I got my emotions under control.

Giselle approached me when I was only a few steps away. She tried to hold my hand, but I took a step back. She stared at her hand that was left suspended in midair before letting it fall to her side with a snort.

"I thought that you only agreed to come because you were feeling better."

I stared at her. My voice was devoid of emotion when I said, "I didn't come to make myself feel better. I came to break up with you."

Giselle looked at me as if I had just told her a joke. She grabbed my sleeve and dragged me toward the private room, exclaiming, "You're already an adult, Cole. You should know where to draw the line!"

Cole's POVI didn't know how Millie managed to get her hands on my overseas number. She called me, saying, "It's me, Cole. It's Millie.""Did you need something?" I asked. She hesitated for a few seconds before saying, "You… Could you talk to Giselle? She abandoned the law firm to look for you in North Porono. She still has a lot of cases to deal with. A few clients are already suing her for breaching their contracts. The entire law firm will be done for if this continues."I couldn't hold back my laughter as I pressed my phone to my ear. "What does this have anything to do with me?"Millie was stunned by my question. "Cole, aren't you her…"I sighed. Not bothering to beat around the bush, I said, "I already broke up with her, Millie. You understand what that is, right? It means that it doesn't matter to me whether she's dead or alive. There's nothing for us to talk about if you're calling me because of her."Millie fell silent for a few seconds on the other end of the line. Fin

Cole's POVI nodded in understanding and didn't force the watchmaker to fix the watch. I placed the broken watch and its components back into the pouch before leaving the shop.Giselle chased after me. "Cole! I'm sorry. I had no idea that the watch was so important to you."I shifted to the side to look at her. "Well, now you know."Giselle looked a little upset as she stared at me. "I didn't ask Harry to break the watch, Cole. I didn't know he would do such a thing…"I couldn't help but laugh upon hearing her words. The entire situation was just too ironic."You didn't know, but you're the one who gave him the watch. When I asked you whether you had found it at the beginning of the year, you told me that you hadn't. "When you used Grandpa's watch to threaten me to go to your apartment, you weren't actually planning to return the watch to me. You only wanted me there because you had a bet with your friends. You were betting that I wouldn't break up with you."My face was devoi

Cole's POVI made my way to my company housing after I disembarked from the plane. The building was located in a nice area. Every unit had its own personal bathroom. It was nicer than expected. The door could be unlocked with a key or a fingerprint scanner. The first thing the resident manager did was record my fingerprints in the system when I arrived at the building. She then handed a key to me. Her mouth split into a wide grin, and her Flendish was heavily accented when she said, "Welcome, Mr. Bannister."I shook her hand and nodded in thanks. A flurry of complicated feelings raged in my chest as I stared at the key in my hand, but I also felt happy.I didn't have to call anyone and ask them to come downstairs to let me in. I didn't need to stand at the door and wait for anyone to finish their work. I didn't need to trail after her like I was but a mere guest and watch as she pulled out a key and unlocked the door.I had my own key. I could use the fingerprint scanner. I coul

Third-Person POVGiselle called Cole nonstop after ensuring that Harry was being tended to. Just then, her phone vibrated. A wave of joy washed over her when she assumed that it was Cole returning her calls. She immediately accepted the call."Cole, you've finally—"Her face twisted even before she could finish her sentence. Veins protruded from her hand as her grip tightened on the phone."What did you say, Millie? Say that again!"Millie's voice echoed clearly from the receiver. "I was rushing to catch my flight when I saw Cole at the airport, Giselle. He had a suitcase with him. It looked like he was going to travel abroad!""I'll rush to the airport right now!""You're too late. His plane has already taken off!"The rest of Giselle's words died on her tongue. She felt as if someone had wrapped their fingers around her neck, strangling her to the point that she couldn't say a single word. She had already made up her mind after arriving at the hospital, planning to look for

Cole's POVMy phone buzzed nonstop. I glanced at the screen and saw that Giselle and Harry had sent me countless messages. "Your birthday's over. You got the cake and sunflowers. It's time to let bygones be bygones.""You saw how easygoing Harry is. It's easy to get along with him as long as you're not petty."At the end of the day, they just wanted to pin the blame on me. I was petty as long as I showed any emotion or got angry.Harry suddenly sent a video to me when I didn't reply to their messages. In the video, he fiddled around with Grandpa's watch as if it was a toy. He grinned and said, "This watch of yours is pretty nice, Cole. It's the perfect size to play around with in bed."A wave of nausea hit me as I stared at the screen. I then furiously dialed Giselle's number."Don't let him touch Grandpa's watch!" I snapped.Giselle chuckled lightly on the other end of the line. "Finally stopped playing dead? Come over to my apartment. I'll head downstairs to let you in."…

Cole's POV"Harry felt really bad about what happened last night," Giselle said. "He specifically came today to apologize to you. It's about time you stop making a fuss. Don't keep dragging this out."The door clicked shut behind us.My ankle collided with the table leg when Giselle shoved me into the seat. I hissed in pain when my bone made a loud cracking noise.Giselle paused and turned to look at me. She was about to make her way over to me when Harry, who was sitting opposite her, suddenly spoke up. "My stomach's been sensitive to the cold lately, Giselle. Cole won't mind if I switch places with him, right?"Giselle didn't say a word as she walked over to Harry. She helped him to his feet and led him to where I was, saying, "Move."I gripped my bag strap as I stared at her and said, "I can't move. My leg hurts."Giselle's expression soured. "It's really gross that you're being so petty, Cole."She told Harry to take a seat before grabbing me by the collar and dragging me
