Nova's POV

I arrived at school the next morning with my heart still racing from the night before.

The hallway was already crowded when I walked in. Students clustered around Harper's locker in a tight knot, phones out, voices low and excited. I spotted Priya at the far end, leaning against the lockers with her arms crossed, watching the scene unfold with quiet amusement.

I walked over to her.

"Watch this," I said.

Priya raised an eyebrow. "Watch what?"

I started counting. "Three... two... one..."

Harper appeared at the end of the hallway like she owned it. Her platinum hair swung with each perfectly measured step. Her smile was already in place, that polished, practiced expression she wore like armor. She clearly thought the crowd was for her. A secret admirer. Flowers. Stuffed animals. The usual attention she commanded.

She didn't see the writing until she was right in front of it.

Then she screamed.

It was an ugly sound, raw and ragged, like a tire screeching against concrete. The smile vanished. Her face went white, then red, then white again.

"WHO DID THIS?"

She spun around, her eyes wild and unfocused. Students stepped back instinctively. Phones were still out, still recording the entire thing.

"WHO DID THIS?!"

She lunged at the nearest phone and grabbed it from a sophomore's hand. The girl barely had time to gasp before Harper smashed it against the locker. Glass scattered across the tile floor. The sophomore started crying.

"Do you know who I am?!" Harper shrieked. "Who gave you permission to film this?!"

Her voice echoed down the hallway. Students were everywhere now, drawn by the commotion. The crowd was growing. Some were amused, others looked genuinely afraid. Most were just watching, phones still raised, documenting every second.

Her minions appeared at her side like summoned guards. Mia, the quiet one who always nodded at whatever Harper said. Courtney, the sharp one with the quick tongue. They flanked Harper and glared at the crowd.

"Back off," Courtney snapped. "All of you. Now."

Nobody moved.

"Did you hear me? I said back off!"

Her voice was shrill, almost as desperate as Harper's. It was fascinating, watching their power crumble in real time. Three weeks of carefully constructed social hierarchy, undone by seven words in red lipstick.

I waited three beats. Then I moved.

I rushed into the scene, pulling tissues from my bag, and started wiping the locker frantically. The red lipstick smeared under the tissue, turning pink and streaky, the letters becoming illegible. I worked fast, my movements frantic, my face arranged into an expression of pure concern.

"Who told you guys you could bully Harper, huh?" I said, loud enough for everyone to hear. I kept wiping, kept smearing, kept playing my part. "This is not acceptable. Bullying is not acceptable in this school."

Harper was staring at me now. Her eyes were glassy, confused.

I turned to her, still wiping, and met her eyes with the most innocent look I could manage.

"Right, Harper?"

Her expression flickered. Something dark and suspicious passed behind her eyes. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

"Harper has told me all about her summer," I continued, my voice bright and sweet. I gestured at the smeared locker with my tissue. "She's told me everything. All of it. So I know this is just some jealous person making things up."

I paused, tilting my head.

"Right, Harper? You told me all about your summer over lunch."

Harper blinked. Her mouth opened, closed, opened again. She looked like a fish gasping for air.

"Unless there's something she didn't tell me." I turned to Harper with wide, concerned eyes. "Is there something you didn't tell me, Harper? Something I should know about?"

Harper's composure was cracking. Her hands were shaking. She opened her mouth, closed it, opened it again.

"There's nothing," she said finally. Her voice was tight, strained. "There's nothing I didn't tell you."

"Of course there isn't." I nodded vigorously. "I knew it. You're an open book. Everyone knows that."

I turned to the crowd, spreading my arms wide.

"We should all be more like Harper," I announced. "She's open. Honest. She doesn't have any secrets at all. That's what I love about her."

The hallway had gone very quiet. Everyone was watching me now, trying to make sense of what I was saying.

Harper stared at me. Her lips were pressed into a thin line. Something flickered behind her eyes, something that looked almost like fear.

I smiled and turned back to the locker, wiping the last of the red letters away. The words were mostly gone now, just faint pink smears against the metal.

"Let me get this off completely," I said, scrubbing harder. "We can't have anyone thinking there's something to hide. You're too perfect for that."

I glanced back at Harper.

"Courtney, Mia," I said, my voice gentle and concerned. "Why don't you take her to the bathroom? She needs a minute to compose herself."

Harper's face twisted. Something in her snapped. Her composure finally, completely shattered.

"I DON'T NEED TO COMPOSE MYSELF!" she screamed. "I RUN THIS SCHOOL! NO ONE BULLIES ME! NO ONE!"

Her voice was so loud that the students closest to her flinched. She looked unhinged now, her carefully constructed mask smashed into pieces.

"I am Harper Caldwell!" She jabbed a finger at her chest. "I run this place! Do you hear me?! I run this school!"

She was breathing hard, her chest heaving, her face blotchy and red. The tears had started.

"I run this school," she repeated, quieter now. Almost a whisper.

"Of course they don't," I said gently. "You're Harper Caldwell."

Courtney and Mia each took one of Harper's arms and guided her toward the bathroom. The crowd parted for them, still watching, still recording.

The door swung shut behind them.

I stood alone in the hallway. The crowd was slowly dispersing. Phones went down. Conversations picked up in low murmurs.

I watched the bathroom door, a smile tugging at my lips.

Priya appeared at my side five minutes later. The hallway had mostly cleared. Classes were starting. The drama was over.

"It was you, wasn't it?" she said.

I didn't answer.

She was quiet for a long moment, watching the empty space where Harper had been. Then she smiled.

"Well, whatever that was... count me in."

I looked at her. Her expression had shifted. The careful, closed-off look from yesterday was gone. In its place was something fierce and hungry.

"I'd love to see the predator turn to prey," she said.

We exchanged glances. That was all the agreement we needed.

Nova's POV Nothing prepared me for this kind of attention. Nothing, not even the weeks of rehearsing this version of myself in front of my bathroom mirror.Ryker's car pulled into the school parking lot and I felt every single pair of eyes turn toward us. Students stopped walking. Conversations died mid-sentence. Someone pointed. Someone else pulled out their phone. This was nothing like the attention I'd gotten on my first day.
