Nova's POV

"You can't be serious."

Ryker was still standing in my living room, looking entirely too comfortable. He'd made himself at home. Eaten my mother's food. Charmed my father. Won over my sister. Now he was looking at me like he had nowhere else to be.

"Can't you tell when you've overstayed your welcome?"

"I don't think your family thinks I've overstayed." He gestured around the room. "It's barely seven. I can stay a couple more hours."

"You're insane."

"I'd love to see your room." He s

Won over my sister. Now he was looking at me like he had nowhere else to be."Can't you tell when you've overstayed your welcome?""I don't think your family thinks I've overstayed." He gestured around the room. "It's barely seven. I can stay a couple more hours.""You're insane.""I'd love to see your room." He said it like it was the most natural thing in the world. "That's if your parents don't mind."My mother appeared behind me like a ghost. "We don't mind. We can tell you're a good boy. Right, Manny?""What?" My father stirred on the couch. The champagne had done its damage."We don't mind if Ryker sees Nova's room, do we?"My father blinked. "Sure. Whatever she wants.""Manny!""I don't care if he sees her room. She's seventeen. She's smart. She's got good judgment." He looked at me. "You've got g

Nova's POV I wanted the floor to swallow me whole.Ryker Lennox was standing in my living room. My living room. With the faded rug and the worn couch and the stack of bills on the coffee table that I'd been trying to hide for a week. And he was holding champagne. My mother was beaming at him like he'd personally hung the moon. My father was still examining the bottle like it was a holy relic. Sofia was frozen in the doorway, her mouth still hanging open.I had drool on my chin. I wiped it quickly with the back of my hand. My face was burning. I could feel the heat creeping up my neck, spreading across my cheeks."What are you doing here?" I finally managed.Ryker's smirk widened. "I was in the neighborhood.""You were not.""Fine. I wanted to see you.""You couldn't have called?""Where's the fun in that?"My mother swatted my arm. "Nova. Be nice. He brought champagne.""He brought—" I stopped myself. "Mom, you don't even like champagne.""I do now."She took the bottle from my fathe

Ryker's POV I watched her walk up to the house. The one she'd pointed out that first morning. The one with the nice porch and the well-maintained lawn. She stopped at the front door. Her hand hovered over the handle. Then she turned and looked back at my car.I was still sitting there, engine running, waiting for her to go inside. She stared at me for a long moment. Then she walked back to my window."You can go now," she said."I'll wait.""I'm fine, Ryker. Go."I studied her face. She looked exhausted. Wrung out. But there was something else there too. Something like panic."I'll wait until you're inside.""Ryker—""I'll wait."She let out a breath. Then she turned and walked up to the door. But she didn't go in. She just stood there, hand on the handle, frozen.Something was wrong.I waited. She didn't move. I thought about getting out of the car, but something held me back. She was lying about something. I'd known it since the first week.I put the car in drive and pulled away

  • Heart On Ice, Puck The Rules    20 - The Invitation

Nova's POVThe cafeteria smelled like stale pizza and desperation.I sat across from Ryker, pushing a plastic fork through my lunch, watching the grease pool on my tray. My appetite had evaporated somewhere between Harper's bathroom threat and now. My mind kept looping back to her words. Burned and forgotten."You're doing that thing again," Ryker said."What thing?""The thing where you stare at something like it personally offended you."I dropped the fork. "I'm fine.""You've said that three times in the last hour. Each time more unconvincing than the last."I opened my mouth to fire back something clever. Then Harper's voice sliced through the noise."Ryker!"She materialized at our table, all polished hair and practiced smiles. Courtney and Mia flanked her like matching bookends."Harper." Ryker didn't bother hiding his disinterest."I'm having a party this weekend. My house. Seven o'clock. You're coming.""That sounds more like a command than an invitation.""It is." She flipped

Nova's POVI was standing at my locker with Ryker, our hands intertwined, playing our parts. I was laughing at something he'd said. He was smiling down at me. It was a performance, but it was getting easier. Too easy. Then I heard the voice."Nova."We both turned.Chase was standing at the end of the hallway. His jaw was tight. His eyes were fixed on our joined hands. He'd been gone for a week. A family trip. He'd left before everything happened. Before the tutoring. Before the deal. Before the kiss in the car.He didn't know and I had completely forgotten he was in the picture. I felt evil. One minute I was publicly flirting with him because I thought he was Harper's boyfriend. The moment she dumped him, he became useless to me as well. "Chase," I said. My voice was careful. "You're back.""Looks like I missed a lot." He walked toward us. His eyes didn't leave our hands. "What's going on here?""Nova and I are together," Ryker said. His voice was flat. Matter-of-fact.Chase stopped

  • Heart On Ice, Puck The Rules    18 - The Girl That Disappeared

Nova's POV The library was quiet. I sat in a secluded corner, my laptop open, my focus locked. The afternoon light filtered through the windows, casting long shadows across the tables. Students were scattered around the room, but nobody was near me. Nobody could see what I was looking at. I'd been searching for hours. Lydia. That was the name. The girl who transferred out two years ago. The one Priya was too scared to talk about. I'd started with the school archives. Old yearbooks. Newsletters. Anything I could find. Most of it was useless. But then I found something. An article in a local online newspaper. Dated two years ago. Crestwood Academy Student Hospitalized After Laboratory Fire I clicked on it. The article was short. Just a few paragraphs. But the details were there. A student named Lydia Sinclair had been involved in a fire in the school laboratory. According to the report, she had a disagreement with another student. In retaliation, she decided to set t
