Nova's POV

The text came at 11:47 p.m.

I was still sitting on the edge of my bed in the dark, phone face-down on the mattress like it might bite me. I had already read Harper’s earlier message a dozen times. The photo. The caption. The quiet promise that she could end everything whenever she felt like it.

This one was shorter.

Break up with him by tomorrow or the whole school sees it. Your choice.

I stared at the screen until the words stopped looking like language.

Break up with Ryker.

The boy

  • Heart On Ice, Puck The Rules    55 - The Deal

Ryker's POV Her name lit up my phone for the fifth time before I silenced it completely. Nova had been calling and texting since six-thirty. Short messages at first. Then longer ones. Where are you? Did something happen? Please just tell me you're okay. I stared at the last one until the screen went dark and locked the phone in the center console. I pulled up to Harper's house at seven on the dot in the new car. She came out already dressed like the morning belonged to her, slid into the passenger seat, and shut the door with a soft, satisfied click. "Smile, Ryker," she said, checking her reflection in the visor mirror. "Or people are going to think you're not happy being with me." "Isn't it obvious?" I kept my eyes on the road ahead. "I'm not happy being with you. You literally blackmailed me into this." She was quiet for a stretch of road. When she spoke again, her voice was calm and measured, like she had already won and was simply waiting for me to accept it. "It do

  • Heart On Ice, Puck The Rules    54 - Leverage

Harper's POV I held the paper up between us and watched his face change. The recognition hit first. Then the calculation. He recovered faster than most people would have.“That doesn’t prove anything.”I laughed. The sound came out bright and sharp in the dark driveway.Deep down I knew he was right. A handwritten list of rules wasn’t a signed confession. It wouldn’t hold up if anyone actually examined it. But leverage wasn’t always about airtight proof. Sometimes it was about the story you could make other people believe.“You’re right,” I said, still smiling. “By itself it doesn’t prove much. But it’s not just about proving your little arrangement with her. It’s about showing your grandfather the kind of person you’ve been meddling with. A girl who sleeps with teachers for grades. A girl who already cost one man his job and is working her way through the next opportunity.”Ryker moved fast. One second he was standing still, the next he had closed most of the distance. I stepped bac

Ryker's POV I was already in bed with the lights off when the knock came. Twenty minutes earlier I had told my mother I wasn’t coming down for dinner. I meant it. After the day at school, the equipment room, and everything Nova had finally told me, the last thing I wanted was to sit at that table and pretend my life was still the neat version my grandfather preferred. “Mom, I told you I wasn’t hungry.” Her voice came through the door, careful. “I know, dear. But we have a guest, and your grandpa insists you come down.” I stared at the ceiling. “A guest? Who is it?” “It’ll be best if you just come down on your own. Wouldn’t want him to come up here. You know how he can get.” Yeah. I knew exactly how he could get when someone ignored a direct request. The lectures. The cold silence. The reminders about the family name and the future that had been decided for me before I could walk. I dragged myself up, pulled a shirt on, and went downstairs with the kind of heavy steps that m

  • Heart On Ice, Puck The Rules    52 - Not Ready

Nova's POV I followed him all the way to the faculty lot. Mr. Grey moved fast, box of personal things under one arm, keys already in his hand. He popped the trunk of a plain gray sedan and set the box inside like he had done this before. When he turned and saw me still standing there, his face tightened. “You shouldn’t be out here.” “Why did you take the blame?” My voice came out rougher than I wanted. “You didn’t do anything. You saved me. Why stay quiet?” He shut the trunk harder than necessary. “Leave Crestwood, Ms. Reyes.” I stared at him. “What?” “Get out while you still can. This place isn’t worth dying for.” He unlocked the driver’s door. “Watch your back. And watch who you trust. There are people here you cannot cross.” “What does that mean? Who are you talking about?” He didn’t answer. He got in, started the engine, and pulled away without looking at me again. I took a few steps after the car like an idiot, still calling after him, when a familiar voice cut across t

  • Heart On Ice, Puck The Rules    51 - Pack Up And Leave!

Nova's POV The last day of the trip had been Friday. That gave me the entire weekend to pull myself together before school started again. I spent most of it in my room with the door closed. My mom asked once if I was coming down for dinner. I told her I wasn’t hungry and left it at that. I didn’t mention Mr. Grey. I didn’t mention the river or the jacket or the way the whole camp had looked at me. She had enough to worry about without adding this. The weekend moved too fast. Monday morning I stared at the ceiling and seriously considered staying in bed. Disappearing for the day felt easier than walking into Crestwood with that story already waiting for me. But not showing up would only make it worse. People would say I was guilty. Or broken. Or both. I sat up and called Ryker. He answered on the second ring, voice still rough from sleep but already carrying that lazy playfulness he used when he wanted to pretend nothing was heavy. “Reyes. To what do I owe the pleasure th

  • Heart On Ice, Puck The Rules    50 - Not Like This

Ryker's POV I woke up to noise outside the cabin and a bad feeling in my gut. One of the guys on the team was talking near the door about the river and Nova and a teacher. I sat up fast. “What did you just say?” He repeated it. Nova in the water. Top missing. Mr. Grey. The whole camp already deciding what it meant. I was on my feet and pulling on a shirt before he finished the sentence. I didn’t knock when I reached the nurse’s cabin. The door was half open. Priya stood outside like she was guarding it. She saw my face and just nodded toward the inside. Nova was alone on the cot, still wrapped in a jacket that wasn’t hers. Her hair was damp. Her eyes were red. When she looked up and saw me, she broke. I crossed the room in two steps and she was already reaching for me. I sat on the edge of the cot and pulled her in. She buried her face in my chest and cried hard enough that my shirt went wet almost immediately. I didn’t say anything at first. There was nothing useful
