[Vanessa]I want to tell Livy everything, to finally give her the truth. I feel bad keeping her out of this little secret. But the walls have ears, two of which are attached to Jessica’s head. She’s looking down at me, her mouth opened slightly in surprise as her mind jumps to exactly the correct suspicion. There’s something about her that I don’t trust, that I’ve never trusted. And as her eyes widen with realization, her lips puckering as she prepares to announce the truth, I scramble to say the first thing that comes to mind."Oh, I’m wearing a protective vest under my dress," I lie smoothly. "There are some really bad people who want to hurt us. I have to try and keep safe at all times.” Livy seems to like this idea a little too much and I feel extra guilty that it isn’t true. Maybe, considering my condition, I should wear a vest to conceal and protect my growing bump. But how do I ask for something like that without drawing suspicion? Hopefully after tonight that won’t be an iss
[Vanessa]How could I say no without looking like a monster? As I look between her big, wide, innocent hazel eyes, I can’t blame my little girl for wanting to keep something she’s wanted for so long. Looking up at Jessica’s barely concealed smirk, I realize that she’s enjoying this far too much. She wants to look like the benevolent big sister. She’s never liked me much, and now it seems like she’s trying to put a wedge between me and Livy.“Please Mama,” Livy squeezes the doll a little tighter. “I want Jessica to stay. She’s fun. And maybe she can play the mushroom game with us,” she blinks between Jessica and Sylvie.” Sylvie nods, while doing her best to keep her smile in place even though she looks like a very uncomfortable third wheel as she reaches down for Livy’s free hand. “Come along, Miss Livy. Your Mama wanted to make sure you had a nutritious dinner,” she frowns at the basket of candy. “You should eat your veggies first.” Livy pouts, looking over at all of her favorite tr
[Vanessa]Before my workout, I had been depressed about the idea of going out on a date, pretending to like someone else as part of a cover act while knowing my fiancé is out there somewhere watching me from afar. But now, as I place a strand of blue pearls around my neck, knowing they are a gift from Hunter, it feels like I am dressing up for him. And I guess, in some ways, that's exactly what I am doing. The seamstress was discreetly silent as she let out my dress, promising me that the sheer overlayer with its empire cut would be enough to hide the alterations. "Nobody will know," she whispered with a small half smile. "I keep my clients' secrets." "Thank you," I had squeezed her hand in true gratitude. I need to remember to give her a generous bonus for her discretion. There are so many people who would take the opportunity to spill a secret like that to the wrong ears. If Debrassy knew the truth, that I'm carrying Hunter's heir, he'd use it against him, as a way to draw him out
[Vanessa]The way he crosses his arms and stares me down leaves little doubt in my mind on who my guardian really is, even if he looks completely different from the man I love. Realizing why, his protective nature and haughty attitude makes so much more sense. I was a fool not to figure out this game of his sooner. But a gut feeling isn’t real evidence. I need to test my hypothesis and use my scientific mind to see things more clearly. Which means I need to conduct a little experiment. What’s the worst that could happen? “You can’t stop me from doing a goddamned thing, Mr. Andrews,” I remind him as I walk towards the hand weights, reaching down to pick up a 10lbs weight in each hand. “You work for me, remember?”His face red, his nostrils flaring, Mason looks like an angry bull as he marches across the room to snatch the weights from my hands. “Mrs. Grant, I must remind you that your doctor did not clear you to work with weights.” “She said light exercise,” I cross my arms, smirki
[Vanessa]Livy continues to spin in circles, holding one of the dresses up to her chest as she twirls. “Princess, princess, pretty pretty princess,” she chants to herself. It’s so sweet I’m almost tempted to keep a few just for her to play with.Looking up at one of our newer maids, I ask her to package it all up and return the dresses to their respective shops as I send Adam a text. “Thank you for the dresses, they are a lovely surprise, but I can find my own clothing for tonight.” One dress catches my eye as it’s wheeled away. An elegant long dress in blue satin, beaded with diamonds along the sweetheart bodice. The satin is so dark it almost looks black, reminding me of Hunter’s eyes. “The dresses came with this card,” the maid hands me an envelope just as my phone dings with a new message.Putting the envelope down, I look at my phone. “What dresses?” Adam wrote back. “My surprise won’t be ready until the auction. Are you seeing someone else…?” He writes, with an emoji of confus
[Vanessa]My mind flashes to that moment in the elevator of the Tower Hotel, on the night of my celebration dinner as I started my new life free of my marriage. I was riding up to the party along with Katelyn Rose and my best friend Tracy, when the elevator stopped one floor too soon. It was then that we saw a gaggle of women flirting and giggling as they left a party I’d later join as I discovered Hunter's secret gangster idenity. What if the modeling agency Debrassy is funding isn't a modeling agency after all? Could it be a front for prostitution? With Debrassy’s name all over the invoices and payroll, this could be more than enough to implicate him in illegal human trafficking, and maybe even create a link between him and all of his other nefarious dealings. Could it be that I’ve already found a break?"Cynthia," my hands shake with excitement as I buzz my secretary through our intercom. "Can you bring me all the information you have on the Firelight Modeling Agency?"“Of cour
