Blake's POV

Aloe's water broke at two AM on a Tuesday. I'd been having anxiety dreams about missing the birth stuck in traffic, unable to find the hospital, arriving too late. Reality was both better and worse: awake instantly, adrenaline spiking, mentally reviewing the hospital bag checklist while Aloe timed contractions.

"Six minutes apart," she said, remarkably calm for someone about to give birth. "We should go soon, but there's time."

James woke up when he heard us moving around. "Is the baby coming? Right now?"

"Right now," I confirmed. "Sofia is on her way to stay with you. Be good for her, okay?"

"Can I come to the hospital?"

"Not yet. Once Hope is born, we'll call you."

Sofia arrived within twenty minutes, still in pajamas but alert. "Go. I've got James. Call me when anything happens."

The drive to the hospital was surreal empty streets, Aloe breathing through contractions, my hands gripping the steering wheel too tightly. We'd done this before with James, but that felt like

  • Heartbreak And Wars   Chapter 160: Surprise Pregnancy

Aloe's POVI discovered I was pregnant again on a Tuesday morning in August, exactly three years after Hope's arrival. Blake was at the capitol for summer session, James was at day camp, and Hope was with my mother for the day. I stared at the test's two pink lines with mixture of shock and joy.We hadn't been trying. We'd barely discussed having more children, both of us consumed with Blake's legislative work and managing two kids already. But here it was unplanned, unexpected, undeniable.I called Sofia first, just like last time. "I'm pregnant. Again. I don't know how to tell Blake.""Why wouldn't you just tell him? He loves being a father.""Because he's in the middle of re-election planning, managing legislation implementation, and barely has time to sleep. Adding a newborn to that seems cruel.""Aloe, Blake will be thrilled. Overwhelmed, but thrilled. Tell him tonight."I spent the day oscillating between excitement and anxiety. Another baby meant another pregnancy, another newb

  • Heartbreak And Wars    Chapter 159: Legislative Victory

Blake's POVThe Criminal Justice Reform Act passed the Judiciary Committee in June by narrow margin six votes in favor, five opposed. Representative Davidson had fought it every step, but coalition of progressive Democrats and two moderate Republicans carried it through."This is just committee," Sofia reminded me during our celebration. "Floor vote is different beast. You need majority of entire House–thirty-one votes.""We have twenty-seven commitments so far.""Commitments aren't votes. People change their minds, get pressured by leadership, decide political cost is too high." Sofia pulled up her legislative tracking spreadsheet. "We need four more guaranteed yes votes and several backup options in case someone flips."The lobbying was intense. I met with representatives individually, explaining how the reforms would work, addressing concerns, offering amendments to secure support. Representative Davidson lobbied just as hard against it, warning colleagues that voting for "felon's

  • Heartbreak And Wars   Chapter 158: Sofia and Heron

Sofia's POVI first met Heron Lewis properly at the Second Chances Initiative's quarterly board meeting in March. I'd heard about him Morrison's former operative who'd helped frame Blake, then cooperated and testified to bring down the conspiracy. But seeing him in person was different. He was early forties, quiet intensity in dark eyes that seemed to assess threats automatically. After serving his reduced sentence for cooperation, he'd started working security for the foundation appropriate irony, the man who'd helped manufacture Blake's charges now protecting the organization fighting to prevent similar injustices."Sofia Martinez?" he said after the meeting, approaching carefully. "I wanted to introduce myself properly. I'm Heron Lewis, head of security and intelligence operations.""I know who you are." My tone was cooler than intended. "You helped Morrison try to destroy Blake.""I did. I was paid to commit federal crimes, and I made that choice. I've spent the last two years try

  • Heartbreak And Wars   Chapter 157: Committee Assignment

Aloe's POVBlake's committee assignment came through in late January Judiciary Committee, exactly what he'd requested. The call came while he was at the capitol, and I could hear the relief in his voice when he called to tell me."I got Judiciary. Also Public Safety and Human Services as secondary assignments. Sofia says that's ideal positioning for criminal justice reform.""That's wonderful! When do you start?""First meeting is next week. I'm already nervous." Blake sighed. "The committee chair is Representative Davidson—career prosecutor before he entered politics. He's already made comments about 'keeping an eye on the convicted felon.'""Then you prove him wrong. Show him you belong there."After we hung up, I sat in our kitchen thinking about how much had changed. A year ago, Blake was launching his campaign. Now he was navigating legislative politics, learning parliamentary procedure, building coalitions. The learning curve was steep, and I could see the stress taking its toll

  • Heartbreak And Wars   Chapter 156: First Day at the Capitol

Blake's POVThe Oregon State Capitol building loomed ahead as I drove through Salem's early morning traffic. January rain pelted the windshield, appropriate weather for my first day as State Representative. Aloe had wanted to come, but Hope had woken up with fever, and someone needed to stay home with her."You'll be fine," she'd assured me before I left. "Just be yourself. That's who they elected."Sofia met me in the parking lot, clipboard already in hand. She'd transitioned seamlessly from campaign manager to chief of staff, trading campaign t-shirts for professional blazers but maintaining the same intense energy."Ready for orientation?" she asked. "We have new legislator training all morning, office assignments at noon, then you meet your legislative assistant at two.""Legislative assistant? I get staff?""You get one assistant funded by the state. I'm your chief of staff, funded through the campaign account. It's a small operation compared to what you're used to seeing in Cong

  • Heartbreak And Wars   Chapter 155: Victory

Aloe's POVElection day arrived with unseasonably warm November weather. Blake was up before dawn, anxious energy making sleep impossible. He checked his phone obsessively, looking for any last-minute polling changes, any indication of how the day might go."You should rest," I told him, though I knew it was pointless advice."Can't. Today determines everything whether convicted felon can actually become legislator, whether Morrison's revenge truly failed, whether all this work meant anything."We voted early, bringing James and Hope to witness the moment. The poll worker recognized Blake immediately."Mr. Matthew! Good luck today. I voted for you.""Thank you. That means everything."James watched Blake fill out his ballot with reverence. "Daddy, did you vote for yourself?""I did.""Is that allowed?""It is. Everyone gets to vote for who they think will do the best job, including candidates voting for themselves."Hope was more interested in the "I Voted" stickers than the democrati
