Wakes’s POV

Aloe hadn’t come back. Not that I expected her to, but each passing hour gnawed at something deeper, a primal edge that refused to calm. I kept on pacing in the living room. I kept on nudging on Heron to fucking do something.

But his voice was always calm and precise, anything I asked if he had gotten anything, and that grated on my nerves. I didn’t want calm, I wanted a solution. I wanted a way to rip her back from the shadow where she had hidden herself.

“Wakes,” Heron said, as if he hadn’t just spent half the night tracking her movements.

“I told you, I’ve traced everything we can. There’s no digital footprint beyond the building she went into. No camera captures inside, no access logs. Nothing at all.”

I slammed my phone on the table, rattling the crystal glass next to it. “Nothing?” I growled.
