Chapter 01: The Marriage I Never Wanted

I never really understood how my life ended up trapped in a marriage I didn’t even choose. It sounds crazy when I say it out loud, but it’s the truth. I walked into this story the way you fall into a trap—quietly, slowly, without realizing it until it’s too late. And even now, I still wonder how I agreed to all of it without fighting back… as if my voice never really mattered.

My name is Claire. I’m twenty-six years old. And the one thing I’ve learned over time is that sometimes you think you’re strong, but you don’t realize how much you’re accepting just to avoid disappointing everyone else.

Jason… he’s my husband. The man I signed a piece of paper for when I didn’t want to. The man I didn’t choose. And yet somehow, everyone around me made that decision for me. My parents. His family. Traditions. I found myself in the middle of it all, unable to say no. Unable to say it didn’t feel like me.

And I think the worst part?

Everyone thought I was happy.

Everyone except me.

The morning everything shifted, I woke up with that familiar weight on my chest. A weight I know too well now. The feeling of being useless in my own life.

Jason hadn’t come home yet. As usual. It had already been three nights since he last slept here. And I kept pretending I wasn’t worried.

He must be working late.

But deep down, I knew that was just another lie. One of the ones I told myself so I wouldn’t cry.

I got up and opened the curtains. The morning light hit my face, but it didn’t warm me. I didn’t love this house anymore. It reminded me too much of everything I’d lost. Or maybe everything I never really had. Love. Tenderness. Presence. Someone looking at me like I was enough.

I went into the kitchen and boiled water for tea. I wasn’t even hungry. I barely ate anymore. I could feel my body getting weaker day after day. But I was so exhausted from everything that even breathing felt like effort.

That’s when my phone vibrated.

It was a message from Natalie. My best friend. My soul sister. The only person who could still make me smile when my life felt like a black hole.

“I’ll be at your place in 20 minutes. Get ready, we’re going out.”

I read it twice. Something small flickered inside my chest—like a candle relighting in a dark room.

I texted back:

“Not today, Nat… I’m not feeling great.”

She immediately sent a voice message. Her tone was soft, as always, but firm.

“Claire, you’re getting in the shower, getting dressed, and coming out with me. You’re not staying trapped in that house another second. I’m already on my way. And if you don’t open the door, I’ll break it down. I’m not kidding.”

I didn’t have the energy to argue.

I don’t know why, but I wanted her to come. I needed her. Lately, I’d been relying a little too much on her words just to stay standing.

I took a long shower. The hot water ran over my skin while I stood there, eyes closed. I hoped it would wash everything away—the pain, the fear, the doubts, the humiliation. But nothing ever left. Nothing.

When I finished getting dressed, I heard a knock.

Natalie walked in like she owned the place. Like nothing could ever stop her. She was wearing her usual perfume—the one that always made me feel safe. Something soft, slightly sweet.

“Oh my God, Claire… you’ve lost even more weight,” she said, pulling me into a tight hug.

I hated when she saw me like that.

Fragile. Lost.

But I didn’t have the strength to pretend.

“I’m fine,” I whispered.

“Stop,” she cut in. “You’re not fine at all and you know it. Look at yourself. You’re wasting away over a man who doesn’t even see you.”

I lowered my eyes.

Because it was true.

Because I had nothing to say.

She took my hand.

“Claire… why do you still love him?”

I shrugged, unable to explain what I felt. Did I still love him? I didn’t even know anymore.

It felt like my heart had been broken so many times I didn’t recognize it.

We went out for a walk. The air helped. The city was loud, people rushing everywhere—yet I felt invisible. Like no one really saw me anymore.

Natalie suggested we grab something to eat. I refused. I wasn’t hungry.

We sat down on a bench instead.

“Claire… you need to stop holding on to something that doesn’t exist anymore,” she said gently.

I turned to look at her.

“Nat… I’m not holding on. I’m just trying to understand how everything fell apart like this. How I became a stranger in my own life.”

She placed her hand over mine.

“Claire, I’m going to say something that might hurt… Jason doesn’t love you anymore. I don’t think he ever did.”

The words hit me like a slap.

A cold one.

But it wasn’t the first time I’d heard them.

And it still tore me apart just the same.

“I know,” I whispered.

My voice shook.

“Then why are you staying?”

I took a long breath.

“Because I’m scared. Scared I ruined everything. Scared to admit everyone was right. Scared of being alone. Scared of losing a whole family I’ve grown attached to… despite everything.

And… I’m scared that if I leave… I’ll regret it.”

She slowly shook her head.

“You should be scared of staying, Claire… not of leaving.”

Her tone was serious. Honest.

And for a moment, something inside me cracked. Like her words had touched the place I’d been trying to hide.

We walked back to my house in silence.

I was exhausted. I just wanted to lie down and forget I existed.

But when we reached the door, a knot formed in my stomach.

The living room light was on.

Natalie and I exchanged a look.

“Jason?” she whispered.

I didn’t answer.

I walked in.

My heart was beating too fast.

He was there.

Standing in the middle of the living room.

As if nothing had happened.

Handsome. Confident. Cold… as always.

And the first thing he did was look at me like I was a problem that needed solving.

“Claire. We need to talk.”

His voice sent a chill down my spine.

He didn’t look tired.

He didn’t look stressed.

No.

He had that expression—the one he wears when he’s already made a decision without asking for my opinion.

Natalie stepped closer to me, almost protectively.

Jason raised his hand.

“This isn’t a conversation for outsiders.”

She laughed.

“Outsider? I’ve been more present in Claire’s life this past year than you have, Jason. Don’t pretend you care now.”

He shot her a sharp look.

“Leave, Natalie.”

“No.”

The tension rose instantly. My hands started trembling.

“Nat… it’s okay,” I murmured.

She turned to me.

“Claire… are you sure?”

I nodded, even though my legs felt like they might give out.

She left reluctantly.

And when the door closed behind her… the air changed.

Jason stepped closer.

Too close.

No smile. No warmth.

Just that empty stare.

“Claire… we need to clear some things up.”

His voice was flat. But something in the way he looked at me hurt.

“What do you want to talk about?” I asked, already dreading the answer.

He handed me a sheet of paper.

“I’d rather you hear it from me… than from someone else.”

I took it. My fingers were shaking.

And when my eyes scanned the first lines—

My heart stopped.

I froze.

My lips moved, but no sound came out.

It was…

A document.

A document that left no room for doubt.

And on the last line, I read the name that shattered me.

Natalie.

My best friend.

My sister.

The girl I welcomed into my home.

The one I told everything to.

Jason exhaled, like it was just paperwork.

“Claire… we need a divorce.”

And the world collapsed beneath my feet.
