Chapter 2

Penulis: Lush Green
"The day before yesterday, I heard you talking to Chloe on the phone while you were in the bathroom. You said you'd passed the exam and were celebrating at The Golden Terrace tonight, so I—"

"Who told you to come? Do you have any idea how awkward you made things for me?" Erin snapped.

I'd thought it would be a surprise for her if I showed up.

I'd figured she didn't tell me because she wanted to celebrate with me in private later.

All those things I'd thought were just a joke.

Watching her sway on her feet, barely able to walk straight, I instinctively reached out to steady her. Yet she shoved my hand away hard, her eyes full of irritation.

"Don't touch me! Don't let anyone know we're together! If they find out, we're done!"

I didn't understand. Why? Why had she suddenly turned into a completely different person?

"Erin, what's wrong with you? Did I do something to upset you?"

Maybe it was the alcohol, but there was something almost crazed about her.

"You didn't do anything wrong! I'm the one who messed up! I was an idiot for falling for a loser like you! Back then, I got blinded by your so-called thoughtfulness and those little favors you kept doing for me!

"Look at you! All you do is drag yourself to that crappy job every day! Does it even offer you a future or any status?

"Do you have any idea how little you make in a month? Do you know how many people want to set me up with guys? They're all either rich or have respectable jobs. Every single one of them is better than you!

"If you hadn't been willing to spend money on me, give in to me on everything, and handle all the housework so I could focus on studying, I would've dumped you a long time ago!"

When she finished, she collapsed onto the couch and fell asleep.

I, on the other hand, stayed awake the whole night, my heart aching too much for me to rest at all.

No matter how much it hurt, I still had my pride. After everything she'd said, staying any longer would've meant I had no dignity left.

I packed my bags in the middle of the night, planning to leave with my broken heart.

I was the one who'd misjudged her. That much I could admit.

Unexpectedly, after Erin woke up the following morning, she called out to me as sweetly as ever. "Honey, my head hurts so much. Can you make me some hangover remedy?"

It was like she'd blacked out. She didn't remember a single thing from last night.

I wanted to be honest and talk things through. If she didn't care about me anymore, there was no reason for us to keep going like this.

"Erin, do you still love me?" I asked, testing the waters.

"Honey, what are you talking about? You're the one I care about the most. Of course I love you!"

Then, she leaned over and kissed me on the cheek.

That completely threw me. If the gift I'd bought for her hadn't still been sitting there, I would've thought I'd dreamed the whole thing.

Just then, Erin's phone chimed.

She was washing her face in the bathroom, so I picked up her phone.

Her passcode was her favorite artist's birthday. I'd always known it, but this was the first time I'd actually unlocked her phone.

"Babe, let's have lunch together. We're already together now, and I still haven't introduced you to my childhood friend. Meet me at 11 o'clock at Hilltop Diner. I'll be waiting."

The moment I read that message, it felt like I'd been struck by lightning. I just stood there, frozen.

Only when I heard the tap in the bathroom turn off did I panic and quickly tap "mark as unread". Then, I put the phone back where it had been.

A moment later, I heard Erin's voice coming from the bedroom. "Honey, my mom just called and told me to go home for a bit. I won't be back tonight."

She put on flawless makeup and slipped into an expensive dress and a pair of black stilettos that clicked against the floor as she made her way out the door.

I thought about it for a long time and chose to follow her instead of breaking up with her right away.

After five whole years together, even if this was the end, I needed to know exactly how it ended.

I disguised myself in advance and waited in a booth tucked into the corner at Hilltop Diner.

Of all people, I never thought she'd be cheating with him.

Erin clung to my arm and sobbed like her heart was breaking. It was as though I were some scumbag who'd abandoned her.People passing by slowed down to stare at us, their faces lighting up like they had front-row seats to some drama."We broke up a long time ago," I said, prying her hand off my arm. "What are you doing here?"I shook her off and took a few steps away, but she rushed after me and grabbed me again."Honey, I know I was wrong," she cried. "Please forgive me, okay? I finally realized you're the one who treated me the best."It was all my fault. I won't ever do that again. I'll make things right with you. I'll learn to cook and do all the housework, and I won't waste money anymore."I'll take you to see my parents too. We can have the wedding next month—no, we can go get the marriage certificate tomorrow. How about that?"I stared at her, unable to figure out what was going on in her head.Did she honestly think I was that easy to fool? She cheated on me and still h

"Penelope, the people from headquarters will be here any minute. We should really get him out of here first," one of the staff whispered.Penelope stomped her foot in frustration and waved security over to throw me out. And so, I got kicked out of Evercrest Holdings' building yet again. It was so ridiculous that I didn't know how to react.20 minutes later, I walked back to the front doors of Evercrest Holdings, trailing right behind the delegation from headquarters. The moment Gerald and Penelope saw me, they grew so tense that their faces twisted. All the department heads were lined up at the entrance, holding flowers and banners, ready to welcome the higher-ups. But before they could use any of it, they saw me stroll right to the front of the line."Jason! What are you doing? Get out of here!" Gerald hissed, glaring at me.He clearly wanted to swear but didn't dare with the people from headquarters standing behind me.On the other side, Penelope kept shooting looks at the se

Monica's voice messages came quickly one after another. I barely had time to reply to any of them."Jason, how do you think headquarters even got their hands on all that evidence? I heard that when the people from headquarters showed up, Gavin was in his office deleting files.""Everyone who used to cozy up to him is freaking out now. They're terrified they'll be dragged down in this mess too.""I heard the police took Gavin's father in for questioning. Rumor has it the anti-corruption unit's been sent in. This isn't some small matter."I wasn't surprised the news was traveling fast.Gavin getting taken away didn't shock me either. After all, I was the one who'd handed in the evidence.I'd worked overtime day after day, getting sent from one department to another without a single complaint. Did they really think I was that easy to push around?I'd only agreed so I could dig through everything, collect proof, and figure out what was really going on.When Gavin tried to teach me

Martin let out a low whistle. "So, you really did get dumped, huh? I told you not to leave with her back then, but you wouldn't listen. Look at you now. Even when you've got that face, she cheated on you?"Caleb clicked his tongue. "Man, that's rough."Damn it! They didn't even try to comfort me. All they did was rub salt in my wound....The next day, on our way to the reunion event, we passed the dorm where Erin used to live. Tyler sidled up to me with that annoying grin of his."Jason, remember this place? You confessed to Erin right outside that building, didn't you?"Martin jumped in when I didn't answer. "That's nothing. Remember that snowy morning? You dragged yourself out of bed at dawn to buy her breakfast and carried it against your chest the whole way so it wouldn't get cold. Every woman in that dorm knew exactly who Jason Ward from the finance department was!"Caleb clutched his chest dramatically. "Our devoted romantic hero ended up getting cheated on. What a traged

Since Gavin had thrown the first punch, I didn't bother holding back. The two of us went at it right there in the office until someone finally called the police. At the police station, I faced the officers and said, "Officer, he swung at me first. I was just defending myself. If you're going to detain someone, then detain us both."Gavin had no shame, but his father still cared about his reputation. There was no way he would let his son end up detained by the police. In the end, the police gave us a stern lecture and let us go.As we walked out of the station, I glanced at the bruises on Gavin's face and couldn't help smiling."Hey, my bad. I've been training in kickboxing since I was a kid. I guess I hit a little harder than I meant to. Try not to take it personally."...The rush of landing a punch had felt great in the moment, but once I was back at the company, my situation got even worse. The general manager, Gerald Porter, was so furious that he wanted to fire me on the s

People always looked for a way up. I decided to just let Erin go. I wasn't about to stop her from trying to climb the ladder. I was the one who'd misjudged how things actually worked.I wanted to end things well, but not everyone was willing to let it go.After the Eastown project was successfully secured, Gavin only got more full of himself at work.It started with little snubs and petty tricks before eventually turning into open exploitation. I was working overtime almost every night. My coworkers would give me sympathetic looks whenever they walked past me, but no one dared to speak up for me.The only one who stood up for me was Monica, but the head of our department, Mike Pattinson, chewed her out so badly that she nearly got demoted.I messaged her in private. "Monica, don't stick your neck out for me anymore. I'll be fine. If you get dragged down because of me, I'll feel even worse."Monica had been with the company for years. With her capability and seniority, she should
