Chapter 3

Author: Lush Green
From a distance, I snapped a photo of the two of them walking arm in arm, then watched them sit down in Room Six, a semi-private room that only VIP members could use.

"Excuse me," I asked a server, "is Room Seven taken? Can I move to a private room over there?"

The server went to check and came back a moment later. "Room Seven's empty, but you'll need to deposit 100 thousand dollars to become a member before you can use it."

I pulled out my bank card and spent all the savings I'd scraped together over the past year.

"Gavin, did you miss me?"

The semi-private rooms were separated by dividers, so I could hear every word from the next room.

"Of course I did. Especially the way you are in bed—" The man let out a filthy laugh.

Erin cut him off in a shy tone. "Stop it! You're so bad!"

She was calling him bad, but her voice was sickeningly sweet.

In the five years we'd been together, she'd never spoken to me in that tone.

The way they flirted with each other afterward made my stomach churn. I couldn't wrap my head around how the woman I'd treated like a treasure could lower herself so much in front of another man.

A wave of emotions hit me—disgust, anger, shame, and a sharp, lingering sadness.

Gavin Trent and I were coworkers, but we couldn't stand each other. Even basic courtesy felt impossible between us.

We used to be in the same department once. He was an arrogant show-off who loved throwing his weight around and bullying people at work. On top of that, he secretly harassed the new intern.

One night when I was working overtime, I happened to walk in on them. The new intern was on the verge of tears. She was furious but too scared to say anything.

I couldn't take it, so I got into a shouting match with him. We almost ended up throwing punches in the office.

Even though the incident was resolved, the intern was still pushed out by Gavin and a few others until she finally quit, and I got called in by management and was soon transferred to another position.

"Gavin, are you really into this woman? She's nothing special. There are tons of women chasing you who are way prettier than her."

"What do you know? I've got big plans for this one. You just sit back and enjoy the show."

After Erin left, Gavin and his childhood friends had started talking even more obscenely.

I really couldn't listen anymore, so I paid the bill and walked out.

That night, I called Erin several times, but she never picked up. A sense of unease lingered in my chest.

We'd been together for five years. Even though I was furious, I still hoped we could end things amicably. I didn't actually want anything bad to happen to her.

It wasn't until Erin came home looking completely normal after work the next day that I finally let out a breath.

I was just about to bring up breaking up when she spoke first.

"Honey, I want to go have some fun before I officially start work. Once I start, I won't have time anymore. You're busy with your job, so I already promised Lacey I'd go to Harvale with her. Is that okay?"

Harvale?

If I remembered right, Gavin was scheduled to go on a business trip to Harvale too.

She was already sleeping with another man and still wanted to keep me as a backup. She even asked me for money so she could go on a trip with him.

"But I want to go with you," I said. "Work isn't that busy these days. I can take some time off and go with you."

I picked up my phone, trying to be considerate as I started checking flights to Harvale.

The moment Erin saw that, she panicked and snatched the phone out of my hand.

"No way!"

Maybe she realized how sharp she sounded, because her tone softened right away.

"How could I let you skip work because of me? I already made plans with Lacey. Just focus on your job. I only need you to cover the trip for me, okay?"

Erin smiled and rubbed her thumb against her index finger in a little gesture to indicate she needed money.

Seeing her grin like that, I almost laughed out of sheer anger.

"Money's been tight for me lately..."

"Oh, come on, honey. You've still got 100 thousand in your bank account. Just transfer it to me for now. Once I start working and making money, I'll pay you back. Don't be such a cheapskate!"

Erin clung to my arm and sobbed like her heart was breaking. It was as though I were some scumbag who'd abandoned her.People passing by slowed down to stare at us, their faces lighting up like they had front-row seats to some drama."We broke up a long time ago," I said, prying her hand off my arm. "What are you doing here?"I shook her off and took a few steps away, but she rushed after me and grabbed me again."Honey, I know I was wrong," she cried. "Please forgive me, okay? I finally realized you're the one who treated me the best."It was all my fault. I won't ever do that again. I'll make things right with you. I'll learn to cook and do all the housework, and I won't waste money anymore."I'll take you to see my parents too. We can have the wedding next month—no, we can go get the marriage certificate tomorrow. How about that?"I stared at her, unable to figure out what was going on in her head.Did she honestly think I was that easy to fool? She cheated on me and still h

"Penelope, the people from headquarters will be here any minute. We should really get him out of here first," one of the staff whispered.Penelope stomped her foot in frustration and waved security over to throw me out. And so, I got kicked out of Evercrest Holdings' building yet again. It was so ridiculous that I didn't know how to react.20 minutes later, I walked back to the front doors of Evercrest Holdings, trailing right behind the delegation from headquarters. The moment Gerald and Penelope saw me, they grew so tense that their faces twisted. All the department heads were lined up at the entrance, holding flowers and banners, ready to welcome the higher-ups. But before they could use any of it, they saw me stroll right to the front of the line."Jason! What are you doing? Get out of here!" Gerald hissed, glaring at me.He clearly wanted to swear but didn't dare with the people from headquarters standing behind me.On the other side, Penelope kept shooting looks at the se

Monica's voice messages came quickly one after another. I barely had time to reply to any of them."Jason, how do you think headquarters even got their hands on all that evidence? I heard that when the people from headquarters showed up, Gavin was in his office deleting files.""Everyone who used to cozy up to him is freaking out now. They're terrified they'll be dragged down in this mess too.""I heard the police took Gavin's father in for questioning. Rumor has it the anti-corruption unit's been sent in. This isn't some small matter."I wasn't surprised the news was traveling fast.Gavin getting taken away didn't shock me either. After all, I was the one who'd handed in the evidence.I'd worked overtime day after day, getting sent from one department to another without a single complaint. Did they really think I was that easy to push around?I'd only agreed so I could dig through everything, collect proof, and figure out what was really going on.When Gavin tried to teach me

Martin let out a low whistle. "So, you really did get dumped, huh? I told you not to leave with her back then, but you wouldn't listen. Look at you now. Even when you've got that face, she cheated on you?"Caleb clicked his tongue. "Man, that's rough."Damn it! They didn't even try to comfort me. All they did was rub salt in my wound....The next day, on our way to the reunion event, we passed the dorm where Erin used to live. Tyler sidled up to me with that annoying grin of his."Jason, remember this place? You confessed to Erin right outside that building, didn't you?"Martin jumped in when I didn't answer. "That's nothing. Remember that snowy morning? You dragged yourself out of bed at dawn to buy her breakfast and carried it against your chest the whole way so it wouldn't get cold. Every woman in that dorm knew exactly who Jason Ward from the finance department was!"Caleb clutched his chest dramatically. "Our devoted romantic hero ended up getting cheated on. What a traged

Since Gavin had thrown the first punch, I didn't bother holding back. The two of us went at it right there in the office until someone finally called the police. At the police station, I faced the officers and said, "Officer, he swung at me first. I was just defending myself. If you're going to detain someone, then detain us both."Gavin had no shame, but his father still cared about his reputation. There was no way he would let his son end up detained by the police. In the end, the police gave us a stern lecture and let us go.As we walked out of the station, I glanced at the bruises on Gavin's face and couldn't help smiling."Hey, my bad. I've been training in kickboxing since I was a kid. I guess I hit a little harder than I meant to. Try not to take it personally."...The rush of landing a punch had felt great in the moment, but once I was back at the company, my situation got even worse. The general manager, Gerald Porter, was so furious that he wanted to fire me on the s

People always looked for a way up. I decided to just let Erin go. I wasn't about to stop her from trying to climb the ladder. I was the one who'd misjudged how things actually worked.I wanted to end things well, but not everyone was willing to let it go.After the Eastown project was successfully secured, Gavin only got more full of himself at work.It started with little snubs and petty tricks before eventually turning into open exploitation. I was working overtime almost every night. My coworkers would give me sympathetic looks whenever they walked past me, but no one dared to speak up for me.The only one who stood up for me was Monica, but the head of our department, Mike Pattinson, chewed her out so badly that she nearly got demoted.I messaged her in private. With her capability and seniority, she should
