Chapter 3

Author: Skylar Lattimore
Raymond bought Victoria a designer bag but gave me an ordinary canvas one. I was foolish before, blind to his clumsy lies. Now, I saw clearly that everything was disgustingly perfunctory.

I said nothing, and he assumed I had calmed down.

In the past, I would have rushed to question him about why he was so good to Victoria.

"You gave Vicky attitude earlier, but she's a kind woman and didn't get angry," he said. After a pause, he added, "You should go do her laundry soon. Her pregnancy has been unstable these past few days, and she got some blood on her pants."

Indeed, his 'kindness' always came with an agenda. How could he say such revolting things with a straight face?

I coldly refused, "No."

He froze, apparently surprised by my refusal. No matter how unwilling I was before, I would eventually obey him.

"Minnie, what do you mean?" His tone grew harder.

"Exactly what I said. Raymond, let's get a divorce."

Raymond was stunned, then he looked at me as if I were insane. "Have you lost your mind? We have a perfectly good life together, and you want a divorce over this small matter?"

I could not help but mock him, "Raymond, what kind of life do you think I live in your eyes? You take my money to support your mistress while you let me starve and freeze. Is this what you call a perfectly good life?"

"I... I just feel sorry for Vicky, don't you? It's not easy for a woman to be pregnant alone..."

"Not easy? If it's not easy for her, has it been easy for me? I've been married to you for two years, and I've never had enough to eat."

His eyes shifted, but he refused to admit his wrongdoing.

I did not bother arguing further and said directly, "Let's get a divorce. If you like Victoria, go be with her."

He gritted his teeth and glared at me fiercely. "Don't regret this, Minnie!"

"The only thing I regret is marrying you!"

Raymond's face instantly turned ashen. He raised his hand and slapped me hard, using all his strength.

I saw stars, and my head had even slammed against the cabinet. A sharp pain shot through me. My vision blurred, and I could smell blood in the air.

Victoria stood at the door, covering her mouth in horror.

Raymond did not come to help me first. Instead, he rushed to Victoria's side, anxiously covering her eyes.

"Don't be afraid. You're pregnant. You shouldn't see this."

He then turned his head toward me and said impatiently, "Get up quickly and wipe off the blood. I'll take you to the hospital. Don't frighten Vicky."

I held onto the cabinet, staggering as I tried to stand up to curse at him. However, I felt the world spinning, and everything went black as I completely lost consciousness.

When I woke again, I heard a doctor's stern reprimand.

"How could you not provide proper nutrition for a pregnant woman in such poor condition, even letting her lose so much blood? If something serious had happened, you would've deeply regretted it!"

I heard Raymond saying, "Yes, you're right. And I'll definitely make sure she gets the nutrients she needs."

I struggled to open my eyes and saw a doctor in a white coat lecturing Raymond. When Raymond noticed I was awake, he immediately put on a gentle expression. He held my hand, his voice full of concern as he asked, "Why didn't you tell me you were pregnant? I nearly..."

I yanked my hand away and turned my face in disgust. After the doctor left, Raymond attentively peeled an apple for me.

"If I had known you were pregnant, I definitely wouldn't have pushed you! Poor Vicky was so frightened that she almost miscarried."

I coldly glanced at him. "So, you're blaming me for scaring your precious Victoria?"

He was immediately at a loss for words. He laughed awkwardly, sighed, and said, "Minnie, how can you say that? You're my wife. Of course, I want to treat you well."

I closed my eyes, pretending not to hear. When I heard the door open, I knew he had left.

After that, I continued setting up the stall and conducting business as usual.Raymond did not come looking for me again, likely busy caring for Victoria at the hospital.A few days later, Carol stopped by to gossip. She had so much news about Raymond and Victoria.Victoria lost the baby, but Raymond married her anyway.Carol gestured dramatically as she said animatedly, "The baby couldn't be saved, and Victoria's womb is injured. She'll probably have trouble conceiving again! Afterward, Victoria started making a scene. She threatened to report Raymond for killing her child if he didn't marry her. Raymond had no choice but to tie the knot."Carol clicked her tongue disapprovingly. "Raymond had a perfectly good life and threw it away for that vixen!"I laughed inwardly. I knew exactly what kind of man Raymond was. Neither of the two was any good, so they deserved each other. After their marriage, their life descended into chaos. They fought every other day and sometimes even viol

Raymond's face flushed crimson, his lips trembling. Even so, he did not dare speak a word. This harassment had been going on for a month, and I had finally reached my breaking point. I snatched the snacks from his hand and hurled them forcefully into the trash."Raymond, when will you stop? What the hell do you want?" I shouted with disgust, my voice carrying months of suppressed fury.He froze, then fixed me with an intense gaze as he feigned sincerity. "Minnie, let's get back together. I've realized I still love you. I loved your diligence before, and I love how captivating you are now."He paused briefly, then added, "I've only ever thought of Vicky as a sister."His words nearly made me retch.Sister? The audacity!I scoffed without restraint. "Do you sleep with your sister? Raymond, do you think I'm an idiot?"His expression turned awkward as he stammered defensively, "I-I didn't... I-I've never slept with her...""You know the truth yourself!" My tone was glacial. "Raymo

Victoria clung to Raymond's arm with the air of a victor. "Minnie, if you really like living here, I could have Ray find you a temporary job at a chain store. Working there would be better than at some individually-owned shop, wouldn't it?"I gave her a sideways glance and said, "My current job is quite good. The salary is much higher than before."Victoria's expression froze. Clearly, she had not expected this response. She looked at my clothes again, and there was a flash of envy in her eyes."Your clothes... are quite fashionable."I replied casually, "Of course. I wear only the latest styles."Victoria bit her lip, unwilling to back down. "Hmph, it's just cheap clothing. What's so special about it?"I deliberately looked them up and down, my gaze lingering on Victoria's worn-out high heels and then over Raymond's faded, washed-out shirt. My tone carried a hint of mockery as I said, "Better than some people who can't afford a single item. Life seems rather difficult, doesn't i

Over the next few days, I learned the business from Lily. She taught me how to attract customers, how to showcase clothes, and how to haggle effectively.I discovered Lily had an exceptional talent for reading people. She could understand a customer's preferences perfectly after just a few sentences. She was also quick-witted, able to describe an ordinary polyester shirt as if it were a masterpiece.Young women would listen, entranced, and reach for their wallets without hesitation."Minnie, you've got a good foundation. You're pretty and look good in everything. From now on, you'll be my model. Just stand in front of the stall, and I guarantee the orders will double!" Lily told me while arranging clothes.I felt a bit embarrassed by her compliments. Though she was still a newcomer in the business field, I was surprised by how successful Lily's business was. Even the salary she offered was twice what I had earned before. When I received my first month's pay, my hands trembled wit

"You're a woman too. Can't you be more understanding?" Raymond said.I had spent three days bedridden after my miscarriage, and he had not visited once. He even moved Victoria into our home and now wanted me to be understanding of this homewrecker who caused my miscarriage."Fine. Since it has come to this, let's get divorced right now."Victoria's eyes reddened as she pretended to be on the verge of tears. "Minnie, don't be angry. I'll leave right away. I have my pride too."I grabbed the vase from the table and smashed it violently on the floor. "Shut up! You two are disgusting!"Raymond carefully cradled Victoria, checking to ensure the ceramic shards did not cut her.Finding Victoria unharmed, he shouted furiously at me, "Have you lost your mind? Vicky's pregnant! Fine! Let's get divorced now! You're just a country bumpkin. Let's see what kind of life you'll have after the divorce!"Victoria covered her mouth and laughed softly in his arms, her eyes full of mockery. The div

I recalled what Raymond was like before we were married. We had met at a coworker's wedding. After the ceremony, Raymond somehow obtained my contact number. He would 'coincidentally' appear on my path home from work every day.Gradually, we became familiar with each other. He was attentive and caring, and he was concerned about my safety when I took night shifts. He would follow behind me from a distance until he saw me safely enter my dormitory. When I was hospitalized and about to lose my job, he gave half a year's worth of his salary to my supervisor to secure my position. I only learned about this from my coworkers after we got married. They all said I was lucky to have Raymond and that he was the perfect husband. They said that as a skilled technician, countless women wanted to marry him. Indeed, his kindness was beyond reproach in the early days of our marriage. He lived frugally but always remembered to buy me pretty clothes. He never looked down on my rural background and

I could not accept this fate! Just as I was about to surrender, a clear voice broke through the desperate silence."Doctor, we found the patient's husband! He's in Ward 302 with another pregnant woman.""What?" The doctor raised his voice in disbelief."His wife is in critical condition, and he's keeping another woman company? This is outrageous!"I couldn't make out what came next as another wave of intense pain hit me, and I lost consciousness completely. When I awoke again, I found myself lying in a hospital bed, utterly drained. The ward was empty. A moment later, the door opened, and Raymond walked in. He carried an insulated container, his face showing a trace of fatigue. "You're awake? How are you feeling?"I stared at him coldly, saying nothing. He placed the container on the bedside table and removed the lid. The aroma of chicken noodle soup wafted out."I made chicken noodle soup. You should drink it while it's hot."It was barely chicken noodle soup—just clear b

I propped myself up even though my head was still spinning, determined to find the doctor from yesterday for the abortion. When passing by another hospital ward, I glimpsed at Raymond through the partially open door. He was carefully feeding Victoria expensive truffle soup one spoonful at a time."Ray, I was just startled. Really, I'm fine," she said softly. "You should save this for Minnie to help her recover.""She's perfectly healthy. She doesn't need anything special," Raymond replied dismissively as if he had not just promised the doctor he would work on my nutrition. In my previous life, such incidents were commonplace. I had grown numb to them. His favoritism would have left me heartbroken once, and his intimacy with Victoria would have made me hysterical. Now, I only felt nauseated. I turned away and headed to the doctor's office but learned he was in surgery.I then returned to my ward, somewhat disappointed. The sterile space contained only a bowl of cold corn soup tha
