Chapter 2

作者: HF Era
The person on the other end of the call I made was so thrilled he could barely speak properly. "I'll give you anything you want! Money, power, anything. Just save my son!"

My mouth formed a smile. "Then make Mason Sanders spend the rest of his life burning in hellfire."

I hung up before he could answer.

The organ donation surgery was set for three days later.

With the spare money I had saved from the fighting ring over the past five years, I bought my parents a quiet plot in a cemetery. At the very least, I wanted to erect a memorial for them. I did not want them to die without anything to remember them by.

And when I died, I wanted to be buried with them.

But as soon as I reached the cemetery entrance, someone slammed me to the ground. Rebecca then kicked me in the chest as she asked, "Where's the money? What did you spend it on? Do you know Mason was humiliated in front of his friends today?!"

I swallowed the blood rising in my throat, my heart growing cold.

So… She had taken the money I had risked my life earning over the past five years for granted and handed it to Mason to waste on whatever he liked.

When she had been with me in the past, she had pretended to be poor. I had saved every cent I earned to buy her jewelry when all she had ever given me was a two-dollar keychain.

Mason followed behind her, his face dark with displeasure. "I already told my friends I was going to bid on that sports car, but when it was time to pay, the balance showed that the account was empty. They all laughed at me for bragging."

Rebecca comforted him gently, then turned and yelled at me. "You've just found out who I really am, and you already can't wait to throw money around. You're so vain!"

I suddenly remembered when we were at our poorest, when we could not even afford medicine for a cold. I toughed it out until the infection turned acute. I had been in so much pain that I was trembling on the floor. Back then, she had held me and cried all night, saying she would trade her own life for mine.

I thought she really cared about me.

But… Only now did I understand that she would rather watch me die in pain than spend a single cent to help me.

I stayed quiet for a long time and still did not tell her I had used the money to buy a plot in the cemetery.

Rebecca looked me up and down, then laughed. "An animal will forever be an animal. You were locked in a cage for five years, and the second you got out, all you did was waste money."

I watched her leave with Mason, then turned and walked back.

Before I had taken more than a few steps, someone covered my head from behind and dragged me into a car.

When I woke up again, I was lying naked in the middle of a mall. I froze, and all the blood in my body seemed to freeze as I could hear the people around me talking about me.

"How disgusting! How can someone like that deserve to live?"

"Look at how pathetic he is. He might as well die!"

"I wouldn't take him even for free, forget about paying for anything for him."

The curses came at me from all directions. Someone spat on me, while another threw bottles and crumpled paper at me.

After what felt like forever, I was finally freed and staggered back home.

As soon as I went inside, I already saw Mason holding a glass of wine and tasting it slowly. When he saw me, he raised his glass with a grin. "You're back? Look at the sports car I just bought. Two hundred thousand dollars. Cool, right?"

Two hundred thousand dollars.

That was exactly how much those people had bet on me each time they tortured me over the past five years.

I finally lost control. I rushed forward and grabbed him by the collar. "What did I ever do to you? Why are you treating me like this?"

Before I could finish, a hard leather bag smashed into my head.

Rebecca glared at me. "How dare you touch him, Ethan? I haven't even talked to you about the money, and now you attack him? Beg him for his forgiveness!"

Two bodyguards kicked the back of my knees, forced me down, and slammed my head against the floor. My forehead split open, and I almost passed out.

Meanwhile, Rebecca had already gone upstairs with Mason.

A cleaner came over to wipe the floor, then spat on me in disgust. "What rotten luck! I'm the one who has to clean up this mess!"

I could not make a sound. My head tilted to the side before I finally lost consciousness. But before that happened, I vaguely heard Rebecca calling my name anxiously from somewhere far away…

The ambulance siren drew closer and closer before finally stopping at the crematorium entrance. The medical staff rushed out. When they saw Rebecca lying in a pool of blood, they all gasped. The knife was still lodged in her chest, trembling faintly along with her weak heartbeat. The doctor quickly examined her with a grave expression. "The tip of the knife is pressing right against the edge of her heart. One millimeter more and she would have died on the spot. She needs surgery now!"When Rebecca was lifted onto the stretcher, her eyes were still open, fixed in the direction where Clara had disappeared. Her view was finally blocked once the ambulance doors shut.-Three months later.Rebecca woke up from her long coma. Thick bandages wrapped her chest, and every breath tugged at the wound with a sharp pain. The hospital room was quiet except for the continuous beeping from the medical equipment around her. After Rebecca was discharged, she did not return to her family. She did

Clara paused for a moment before turning to Mason, her voice clear and cruel. "You like to play games, don't you, Mr. Sanders? You think it's fun to watch people struggle in cages, don't you?"Mason shuddered and shook his head frantically. "No, no! Rebecca made me do all of that! She forced me! I never wanted to!""Hush." Clara raised a finger to her lips and cut him off. "Mr. White spent five years in the underground fighting ring. He broke seven ribs, lost four teeth, was injected with drugs, and was displayed like a zoo animal while people bet on him."With every sentence she spoke, Mason's face turned paler."Mr. White had wished," Clara straightened and announced her judgment. "For you to be there too and stay for five full years. Not one day more, not one day less. The same cage, the same rules, the same game.""No!" Mason struggled desperately. "I won't go! Rebecca! Save me! You said you'd always care about me! You said that as long as I behaved, you'd give me anything! Ma

Rebecca looked like she had seen a ghost. Her face went deathly pale as she stared at Clara. The atmosphere around them seemed to freeze, and all you could hear was her heavy breathing.Time ticked slowly, but Clara's eyes were filled only with sternness and cold expectations. After several seconds of dead silence, Rebecca suddenly laughed. She grabbed the short knife and pressed the tip to her own heart without hesitation as everyone stared in shock. "As you wish!"There was the sound of a spurt, and then blood started to gush out, staining her hands and the front of her clothes red.Clara simply watched in silence, her eyes completely still.Only when Rebecca staggered and grabbed the doorframe with blood staining her fingers and around the knife handle did Clara raise her hand slightly. She signaled the people behind her not to step forward."Can I see him now?" Rebecca's voice carried an irrational stubbornness.Clara stepped aside, her voice as calm as if she were talking

Rebecca froze at the nurse's words. She lost control, and her grip around the young nurse's arm tightened. "I'm talking about the tall, thin man in bed three! He was fine yesterday! Why would he be cremated so suddenly?!"The nurse winced from the grip and shook her hand off hard. "Mr. Ethan White from Bed Three, right? He just passed away on the operating table after donating a kidney, and he has already been sent to be cremated. Are you his family? Where were you before the patient died? What's the point of putting on this act after he has already passed away? Disgusting!"With that, she ignored the devastated Rebecca and pushed her cart away. After confirming that Ethan truly was dead, Rebecca seemed to lose her strength all at once as she collapsed onto the floor. The next second, she got up to her feet and ran desperately toward the crematorium as if she had suddenly remembered something. She stumbled into the parking lot and hit the gas.Red lights flashed along the way, bu

When I woke up, Rebecca was standing beside the hospital bed with a lab report in her hand. "The doctor said you should get some proper rest over the next two days."There was no warmth in her voice, and my heart tightened.Had she found out?But the next second, she sneered. "Are you done pretending? Coughing blood didn't work, so now you're faking a terminal illness? After five years in the underground fighting ring, you still haven't learned a thing. All you know is to use these filthy tricks to fool others."I stared at her blankly, then lowered my head and forced myself to smile.Right. I had almost forgotten. She was no longer the Rebecca who would feel sorry for me.Just then, Mason pushed the door open and came in. He then said in a sincere tone, "I know you feel terrible because of all that anger you felt from Rebecca buying me a sports car. I heard snakes are good for your condition, so I had someone catch the best snakes for you."Rebecca's voice softened. "You don't
