Chapter 2

Author: Honeyed Habit
When I returned to the hospital for a follow-up, my parents called.

Their first concern wasn't how I was doing. They immediately started defending Natasha.

"Callum, why are you two fighting again? You have to make a marriage work. Don't be so stubborn. You can't keep bringing up divorce all the time. How awful would that look?"

I was exhausted. I didn't even have the energy to argue with them anymore.

I couldn't understand why they were so determined to cling to a marriage that was already dying. I'd already ended up in the hospital. I'd nearly died, with one foot in the grave. None of it mattered to me anymore.

Hence, I calmly said, "I want a divorce. I nearly died, and Natasha agreed."

A long silence followed before they finally hung up.

…

That afternoon, my in-laws, who lived nearby, came over right away.

They took one look at my haggard face, and even they couldn't bring themselves to criticize me. All they could do was promise to talk things over with Natasha.

"My daughter has always had a bad temper. How could she not even show up when her own husband is sick?

"Don't worry, Callum. I'll make sure I teach her a lesson this time. I won't let her come home until you've calmed down."

It was the same old routine. They acted as if they were taking my side, but in reality, they always found a way to cover for their daughter and excuse what she'd done. As if anything she did could be forgiven.

A profound sense of weariness settled over me.

I wasn't angry. I simply didn't love her anymore. I wanted nothing more to do with her.

"I want a divorce." My voice was cold and firm.

My in-laws' expressions changed immediately.

"Callum, don't keep thinking like this. You two just need time to adjust to each other. She's still young and immature. Of course she didn't handle things properly. I'll make her change," my father-in-law, Tobias Simpson, claimed.

My mother-in-law, Cindy Miller, muttered under her breath, "A man who can't keep his own woman just isn't capable enough."

Not capable enough?

I gripped my hospital gown until my knuckles turned white. My voice grew colder than ever. "I'm getting a divorce no matter what you say. Natasha agreed to it. If you have a problem with that, go ask her."

My in-laws didn't believe me, so they called Natasha.

She was still angry. As soon as she heard what I'd said, she went along with it. "That's right. Let's get a divorce. I can't take it anymore. Do you know how miserable I've been? I cheated, but I changed. I even fired my secretary.

"What else do you want me to do? Do you expect me to die and go back in time so I can undo it?

"I told you, I was drunk and didn't know what I was doing. What's done is done. We have to move forward. We have a child now. All of that happened a long time ago."

She hung up without even asking why I was in the hospital.

Just like that, she dismissed all my pain.

Had she ever thought about this day when she cheated?

People who cheated were shameless. They deserved to be miserable. What right did she have to call herself the victim?

For five months, ever since she first got pregnant, everyone had expected me to consider everyone and everything except myself.

I couldn't even take medication for my depression and insomnia. Yet she slept peacefully without a care in the world while I lay awake, terrified that the baby in her womb wasn't mine.

I felt like a balloon filled to the breaking point with nothing but misery and despair. Every moment was agony, and all I wanted was to die.

I was a person too. Who ever stopped to think about me? What right did she have to stand there and complain about how miserable and low she'd been made to feel? What right did she have to call herself the victim?

…

My parents arrived too. Just as they had pressured me to get married in the first place, they now pressured me to hold on to the marriage.

"Listen to me. You're not getting a divorce. Would your mother and I ever hurt you?"

Their daughter-in-law gave them plenty to brag about. She had a successful career, made good money, and gave them something to boast about in front of their relatives.

But I didn't want her!

I stared at their faces, grabbed the glass beside me, and smashed it against the floor. "Enough. From now on, I'll be responsible for my own life."

Natasha smiled. "Who do you think you are? If that's how you want to play it, I have plenty of ways to deal with you."She had never been a particularly kind person. Only when it came to Callum had she ever shown a gentler, softer side.Brandon still hadn't realized how bad his situation was. He tried the same old tactic again. "Natasha, we already ended things. We're just coworkers now. Callum won't care at all."No matter what Brandon said, Natasha was determined to fire him.He refused to leave, so Natasha had security escort him out.But that wasn't all. She soon received another video. It showed Brandon bragging again. "Think I won't make her choose between us? I'll make her choose me, then I'll go up to the rooftop and cause a scene."Do you really think I'd actually kill myself? Of course not. I'm just making Callum hurt even more. He was even willing to sacrifice his own child for me."Of course, everything had gone exactly as Brandon had planned. He'd gotten the perfec

Natasha knew she was in the wrong, so she didn't argue. She promised, "I'll deal with him soon. I'll fire him and send him somewhere far away from Callum so he can't interfere with us anymore."Natasha's parents were thoroughly disappointed."You're on your own now. We've said everything we could to Callum. Even we aren't willing to speak up for you anymore. We support his decision to divorce you. What do you expect us to do?" Tobias asked."You had such a good husband, and you didn't appreciate him. You brought this on yourself," Cindy said solemnly.Natasha's parents had been furious for so long that they were practically speechless.Natasha panicked. "Mom, Dad, please help me. If you don't speak up for me, Callum won't listen to anything I say."Natasha's parents each retreated to their rooms."Clean up your own mess first. Then come back to us."They weren't going to abandon their daughter, but they needed Natasha to show at least some sincerity. She understood and immedi

Natasha thought about it for a long time. What had happened between her and Brandon really had been an accident. She'd gotten drunk at the office, and everything that followed had unfolded in a haze. But once someone crossed that line for the first time, it became much easier to cross it again. Something subtle had developed between her and Brandon. They exchanged knowing looks and understood each other's feelings without ever putting them into words. The affair had only come to light because of her own carelessness. She'd bought Callum a bottle of perfume without realizing that he was allergic to it.It happened to be Brandon's favorite scent.Callum was far too perceptive not to notice. He'd immediately sensed that something was wrong. Little by little, he'd investigated until he uncovered everything. The moment the affair came to light, Natasha regretted it. She knew perfectly well that she didn't want to abandon her family. She loved Callum, and they were even expecting a chi

My in-laws cried out several times, "What a sin."Unfortunately, there was nothing they could do.…News of Natasha's actions spread quickly. The story soon twisted into one about how she had saved Brandon, casting the two of them as a couple who had been cruelly torn apart.People were more than generous with their blessings. Some even declared: [The person who isn't loved is the real homewrecker.]Online, the public overwhelmingly praised Brandon. Meanwhile, any reasonable comments that criticized him were quickly deleted.[What is wrong with these people? What kind of values do they have? They're actually praising a homewrecker? A homewrecker goes up to the rooftop and forces the wife to give in, and somehow that's acceptable? What kind of nonsense is this?][Exactly. To everyone supporting them, I hope you enjoy being the third wheel someday.]…I didn't need to think twice to know Natasha was behind that.I remained perfectly calm and saved the posts one by one as evide

After that, I hurried back to the ER.My father wasn't seriously injured. He just needed to stay in the hospital and rest for a while. My mother was still crying so hard she could barely speak. She had finally seen Natasha for who she really was.She grabbed my hand and said, "Cal, I'm sorry. You should've gotten divorced sooner."My in-laws had followed us over. They had been about to comfort her, but instead, they immediately tried to reason with her."Don't think that way, my dear. Natasha must've been bewitched by that pretty boy. Let me talk some sense into her. We're all family here. Don't do this. She's still carrying your family's child," Cindy claimed. My mother wiped away her tears. "She never cared about us in the first place. What, now that her company has grown with our family's support and partnerships, she's turning around and biting the hand that fed her just to make that secretary happy?"Cindy took mother's hand and tried to soothe her. "Oh, come on. We've been

I felt awful, so I went back to the hospital.Just as I was preparing to leave, a major commotion erupted at the hospital entrance. My parents were there. They grabbed Brandon and slapped him across the face."You homewrecker! How dare you bully my son? How shameless can you be, going after a married woman?"It turned out Natasha had brought Brandon to the hospital because he'd gotten a small cut on his foot. Neither of them had expected to run into my parents. The scene quickly descended into a barrage of curses and insults. "What a shameless bastard. And he looks so respectable, too."All the color drained from Brandon's face. He stubbornly ran up to the rooftop. The red handprint across his cheek only made him look more vulnerable, like some fresh-faced young man who had just entered the workforce.Natasha, who had gone to get his medication, hurried after him.She had eyes for no one else. Not me. Just Brandon. She kept calling out to him and begging him not to do anything
