Chapter 3

Author: Honeyed Habit
When my parents realized they couldn't change my mind, they gave me the silent treatment. They told me that no matter what happened, I couldn't get a divorce. If I did, they'd cut ties with me.

I treated their words like background noise.

Once I felt a little better, I took the divorce papers and went to the office myself.

Just as I walked in, a familiar figure entered ahead of me.

The familiar smell of tobacco made me freeze. It belonged to Natasha's secretary, Brandon Reed.

So this was what she'd meant when she said she'd fired him?

My heart clenched painfully. Another lie. Another betrayal. More lies.

So this was what she called admitting her mistake and changing?

The cheerful chatter inside stopped the moment I opened the door.

Brandon's hand rested casually on Natasha's shoulder, far beyond the bounds of any normal professional relationship.

Natasha looked panicked, yet she instinctively pulled him behind her. "Callum, let me explain. It's not what you think."

She thought I'd react the way I always had. She thought I'd lose my mind, break down in tears, and force her to choose between us. She thought I'd demand that she cut him off completely, swear she'd never do it again, and come back to our family. She thought I'd make such a scene that everyone would find out and we'd all end up humiliated.

I really didn't care anymore. If anything, I thought my former self had been an idiot. Cheating happened either once or countless times.

I held out the documents to her. "Sign them. Once you do, the agreement takes effect. These are the divorce papers. You already agreed to this."

Only then did Natasha seem to notice my condition. I was deathly pale.

"Callum, you..."

She had assumed her parents had deliberately exaggerated how sick I was just to get her to come home and appease me. That was why she'd kept putting off going to the hospital.

She wanted to teach me a lesson. She wanted me to be the one who gave in.

Now that she saw me with her own eyes, however, she grew flustered and struggled to get the words out. "Callum, I'm sorry. I... I didn't know you were this sick. I was just too angry at the time."

Brandon's eyes reddened as he put on the same pitiful expression. "Mr. Jones, please don't misunderstand. It's all my fault. Without this job, I really won't be able to survive.

"I know I was wrong. I won't have anything else to do with Ms. Simpson. Please don't read too much into it.

"What happened that day was an accident too. I'm already at the lowest position now. Please, I'm begging you. Give me a way to survive."

The more he spoke, the more pitiful he sounded. He even looked as though he was about to kneel before me.

As he moved, he bumped into the shelf behind him and sent it crashing down.

Natasha immediately stepped in front of me, but the moment she heard Brandon's voice, she forgot all about me and her pregnancy. She pulled him into her arms without hesitation.

She anxiously checked him from head to toe. "Are you okay? Did you get hurt anywhere?"

I stepped aside. The bookshelf grazed my shoulder as it fell. Dust filled my mouth and stung my eyes until they watered.

A person's instincts never lied. I'd never won. Natasha had never truly let him go.

I lowered my gaze and noticed a used condom wrapper that had fallen from between the books.

The sight instantly triggered my obsession with cleanliness. My stomach twisted violently. A powerful wave of nausea doubled me over, and I dry-heaved uncontrollably.

Only then did Natasha remember me. She hurried over to support me. "Callum, are you okay?"

"No! Stay away from me! Get out!" I screamed in fright and shoved her away with all my strength.

No matter how hard I tried to hold myself together, I couldn't stop the tears from falling.

It was so damn dirty!

I had suffered so much, yet no one had ever stood on my side. Not once had anyone spoken up for me. Everyone just wanted me to be understanding. They told me to let it go and move on.

I shoved the door open and rushed straight to the bathroom, where I vomited until I had nothing left.

Natasha smiled. "Who do you think you are? If that's how you want to play it, I have plenty of ways to deal with you."She had never been a particularly kind person. Only when it came to Callum had she ever shown a gentler, softer side.Brandon still hadn't realized how bad his situation was. He tried the same old tactic again. "Natasha, we already ended things. We're just coworkers now. Callum won't care at all."No matter what Brandon said, Natasha was determined to fire him.He refused to leave, so Natasha had security escort him out.But that wasn't all. She soon received another video. It showed Brandon bragging again. "Think I won't make her choose between us? I'll make her choose me, then I'll go up to the rooftop and cause a scene."Do you really think I'd actually kill myself? Of course not. I'm just making Callum hurt even more. He was even willing to sacrifice his own child for me."Of course, everything had gone exactly as Brandon had planned. He'd gotten the perfec

Natasha knew she was in the wrong, so she didn't argue. She promised, "I'll deal with him soon. I'll fire him and send him somewhere far away from Callum so he can't interfere with us anymore."Natasha's parents were thoroughly disappointed."You're on your own now. We've said everything we could to Callum. Even we aren't willing to speak up for you anymore. We support his decision to divorce you. What do you expect us to do?" Tobias asked."You had such a good husband, and you didn't appreciate him. You brought this on yourself," Cindy said solemnly.Natasha's parents had been furious for so long that they were practically speechless.Natasha panicked. "Mom, Dad, please help me. If you don't speak up for me, Callum won't listen to anything I say."Natasha's parents each retreated to their rooms."Clean up your own mess first. Then come back to us."They weren't going to abandon their daughter, but they needed Natasha to show at least some sincerity. She understood and immedi

Natasha thought about it for a long time. What had happened between her and Brandon really had been an accident. She'd gotten drunk at the office, and everything that followed had unfolded in a haze. But once someone crossed that line for the first time, it became much easier to cross it again. Something subtle had developed between her and Brandon. They exchanged knowing looks and understood each other's feelings without ever putting them into words. The affair had only come to light because of her own carelessness. She'd bought Callum a bottle of perfume without realizing that he was allergic to it.It happened to be Brandon's favorite scent.Callum was far too perceptive not to notice. He'd immediately sensed that something was wrong. Little by little, he'd investigated until he uncovered everything. The moment the affair came to light, Natasha regretted it. My in-laws cried out several times, "What a sin."Unfortunately, there was nothing they could do.…News of Natasha's actions spread quickly. Meanwhile, any reasonable comments that criticized him were quickly deleted.[What is wrong with these people? What kind of values do they have? They're actually praising a homewrecker? After that, I hurried back to the ER.My father wasn't seriously injured. He just needed to stay in the hospital and rest for a while. My mother was still crying so hard she could barely speak. She had finally seen Natasha for who she really was.She grabbed my hand and said, "Cal, I'm sorry. You should've gotten divorced sooner."My in-laws had followed us over. They had been about to comfort her, but instead, they immediately tried to reason with her."Don't think that way, my dear. Natasha must've been bewitched by that pretty boy. Let me talk some sense into her. We're all family here. Don't do this. She's still carrying your family's child," Cindy claimed. My mother wiped away her tears. "She never cared about us in the first place. I felt awful, so I went back to the hospital.Just as I was preparing to leave, a major commotion erupted at the hospital entrance. My parents were there. They grabbed Brandon and slapped him across the face."You homewrecker! How dare you bully my son? How shameless can you be, going after a married woman?"It turned out Natasha had brought Brandon to the hospital because he'd gotten a small cut on his foot. And he looks so respectable, too."All the color drained from Brandon's face. Not me. Just Brandon. She kept calling out to him and begging him not to do anything
