Tristan’s POV

I stood on the rooftop across from the diner with both hands on the railing. The metal was cold under my palms. I had been there for over an hour, watching through the large front windows as Jasmine moved between tables. She looked exhausted, her lean frame was carrying too much weight. Her hair was pulled back tight. But she kept working, dodging wandering hands and loud rogues with the practiced grace of someone who had done it too many times.

My wolf was restless. The curse

  • Her Alpha’s Kryptonite   CHAPTER 32: Wolf Fever

Jasmine’s POV I knew something was wrong before I opened my eyes. Mostly because it wasn't even sound or movement. It was an instinct that told me that something bad happened. The kind that mothers grew without realizing it. I sat upright in bed just as a small whimper reached me from the second bed across the room. “Mom…” I moved before he even finished the word. Because hearing the weakness in his voice told me that something was going on. “Marc?” I asked. His curls clung to his forehead, his cheeks were flushed at an unnatural shade of Crimson, and the moment I touched his face, I jerked my hand back as I felt the heat of it. He was burning. “Oh sweetheart, what happened?” I asked softly. “My head hurts.” His breathing came in uneven little pants.“And I'm so cold, but it is so hot.” His eyes stayed shut, but his fingers reached blindly until they found my sleeve. “I know, little wolf.” I understood what this was all too clearly. This was wolf fever and once it started, it w

  • Her Alpha’s Kryptonite   CHAPTER 31: The Training Offer

Jasmine’s POV Marc fell asleep faster than I expected, and I smiled at the fact that the resort had worn him out completely. He insisted on telling me every detail about the craft session before bed, how he painted a wooden wolf because grey wolves were boring. So he decided that the color blue was what he wanted. And by the time he reached the story of the duck that he decided silently and secretly ran to the lake, his eyelids had already begun to droop. Now he slept peacefully beneath the wide comforter with one arm wrapped around the stuffed wolf Zea had bought him years ago from a discount store. I brushed the curls away from his forehead. "You did good today," I whispered. “I was so scared that you wouldn't manage, but I'm glad that you did. Thank you for this.” He mumbled something inaudible in his sleep. Then he smiled and my heart softened. Every lie and every fake document, sleepless night and worries seemed to slide off my shoulders.Because this was all worth it, see

  • Her Alpha’s Kryptonite   CHAPTER 30: Tristan studies Marc

Tristan’s POV The dining pavilion overlooked the lake, sunlight scattering across the water in broken ribbons while conversations rose and fell around the long wooden tables. Children laughed somewhere near the dessert station, someone from accounting complained about mosquitoes and a project manager was already halfway through his second beer despite it barely being noon. It looked effortless… relaxed even. That was exactly what I paid for. I stood near the entrance with Jeff beside me as employees filtered inside with their spouses and children. “Is everything ready?” I asked quietly. “There will be no issues. Am I correct?” Jeff nodded once. “The seating charts are exactly as requested. There will be no mistakes. I have already assigned everything the way that you asked me to, boss.” No one would notice three chairs shifting from one table to another. No one would question why department managers had been rearranged, or why the marketing teams had somehow ended up beside the

  • Her Alpha’s Kryptonite   CHAPTER 29: The Resort Arrives

Jasmine’s POV The smell of sunscreen filled my moist is the second that we entered the resort. This had nothing to do with money. The atmosphere was like someone had bottled and sold something called relaxation. I noticed that the second we passed the gate, the way the air changed were people's shoulders loosened and the way staff moved with a choreography that made everything look effortless. And as much as I wanted to feel the relaxation, I couldn't help but feel tense. Marc’s hand was warm in mine. He was humming a tune he’d invented, the kind of small, steady sound that kept me tethered. He kept tugging me toward the building. His eyes were bright the way Childs were in a place filled with promises and adventure. I let him go. I had rehearsed the smile that I would give at the check in the board aunt who had been dragged along for the week. I had this crypt, I had the prompts, and I had the ridiculous polaroids in my back like a talisman. Because they were the one thing t

  • Her Alpha’s Kryptonite   CHAPTER 28: Zea’s Plan

Jasmine’s POV Zea’s grin hit me before she did. She always knew what to say, and she was always impossible to ignore and impossible to argue with. She dropped her back on the kitchen chair with everything that she needed with her. She had sticky notes on my monitor. She scanned the room, her eyes lit with a particle. Kind of dangerous. That told me that she was too enthusiastic for something like this. “All right,” she said, clapping her hands once. “Tell me everything. I need you to tell me everything that I need to know about him, about Marc and how Tristan comes in the picture. I will then be able to actually make a story out of it.” I told her. The memo, the resort, the mandatory family lines that everybody needed to know. Tristan's half second pause in the hallway and the way my stomach folded itself into a knot the size of a fist. When I finished, she sat down on the counter and crossed one leg over the other, like she was settling in for a long, delicious fight. “Okay,”

  • Her Alpha’s Kryptonite   CHAPTER 27: The Family Retreat Announcement

Jasmine’s POV The memo left on my desk was the kind of paper that felt heavier than it should. I read it once, twice, and my hand curled slowly into fist around the corner until the paper crumbled under my knuckle. Mandatory. All senior staff and their families. The Word family landed like a stone. And I found myself doing the one thing I always did when I felt danger; I forced myself into work. It was a coal deficiency of someone who had learned to counter exits before she slept, but I knew that it was the only way for me to survive in this world. Marc. Six years old. Silver-blue eyes that were Tristan Winthrop’s eyes in miniature. I had kept them in separate compartments for months, work here, life there; Tristan there, Marc here; the ledger of my days balanced by omission. And this memo wanted me to bring both compartments into the same building for a week. I did not want to do that. I did not even know how I was going to manage it. My throat felt dry and I folded the memo
