CASPIAN

I didn’t remember leaving the building.

One second, I was standing in the middle of my office with Aria’s voice telling me to come home, and the next I was halfway down to the parking lot.

Her voice hadn't been raised and that was the problem.

Aria yelling I could deal with, hell I'd take her screaming at me for an hour over that cold, harsh tone she'd used.

That tone meant something was wrong.

My mind was already flipping through scenarios I didn’t want to think about, and every single one ended with me being too late.

By the time I turned into the house, my pulse was pounding in my ears.

Inside the house, everything was exactly in its place.

There was none of the chaos I had been expecting. No screams or crying, or the sound of something breaking.

There was just Aria, sitting at the kitchen counter with a cup of coffee in her hand, her head bent forward.

“Aria?” I called, hurrying over to her.

For a second, my brain tried to relax. Then my eyes dragged over her skin a

CHAPTER 212ARIAI lingered near the sculpture a moment longer, my eyes tracing the delicate lines again. There was something… almost familiar in the curve of the shoulders, the tilt of the head. My stomach twisted, and for a fleeting, ridiculous second, I thought of my mother. The thought made my chest ache. My mother had been gone for years, taken before I was ready to understand the world without her. I shoved it away as fast as it had appeared. No. This wasn’t her. My brain wouldn’t allow it. My heart certainly couldn’t.I heard Nyx’s footsteps behind me, and quickly stood. She took the sheets and threw it over the sculpture. “I'm sorry for being so dramatic about this. But I'm convinced Evelyn's lying, and I can't imagine why she'd want to.” “Nyx, you have to stop. What reason would she have to lie?” I said. Nyx shook her head. “You don’t understand. I’ve been looking into her, digging, tracing anything I can find. So far… the only thing I’ve come up with is that she used

ARIAI practically bolted from the car before Caspian could even park properly. My neck protested with every movement, but the adrenaline and a creeping stubborn curiosity made certain that I ignored the ache. Nyx’s urgency didn’t allow for a polite knock because the door had already been left open. Nyx was standing in the center of the room. Her hands were already holding the edges of a cloth covering the sculpture. Her other hand was clenched at her side as she kept her eyes trained on the sculpture. She turned when we burst in through the doorway, her eyes practically glittering with what I suspected were tears. “There you are!” she breathed, almost whispering. “I didn’t think you’d make it this fast.”“Trust me, we came as soon as you called,” I said, wincing slightly as I rubbed my neck. Nyx eyes dropped to my neck and she blinked. “Don't ask, Nyx.”Caspian was behind me like a shadow. We both ended up beside Nyx. “Come on, cover off.” I demanded. “I don't know if I'm be

ARIAThe doctor left with thirty minutes later, leaving instructions to rest my neck, avoid strain and ice my neck if they swelling got worse. Caspian, of course, was already on his crusade to enforce the doctor’s orders like they were law. He had me on the couch, a throw pillow tucked behind me, and a glass of water on the table beside me like I might suddenly forget how hydration worked. I was too damned pissed to drink. Flashes of that man's face, smiling gently as he tucked my hair behind my ears filled my head.Caspian leaned down, brushing his fingers through my hair. “You’re lying back for the rest of the day.”I nodded an unconvincing agreement and waited until his footsteps disappeared into the hall before grabbing my phone.Vienne answered on the second ring. Her voice was smooth as though she understood she needed to keep me pleased but didn't really like doing it. “I need the company’s internal financial statements,” I said. “At least the last five years of reports.”

CASPIAN If there was a universal smell for wasted time, it was the cologne of the man currently talking in the conference room. “Mr. Finnick? The departmental reports have been forwarded to your email.” “That’s the third time you've said that, Matthews. Meeting is dismissed.” I said to the rest of the room. I had a meeting with two department heads and a finance consultant. My laptop sat open in front of me, the spreadsheet filled with numbers that weren’t going to fix themselves, while I sipped coffee and wondered how much of my life I’d waste listening to words that meant nothing. I could be home with the twins, or I could be with Aria. I wouldn't call myself dreamy, but after hearing Aria say she loved me too, nothing else would do. That’s when Analide slipped in. She didn’t knock. She easily crossed the room, set a phone down in front of me and stepped back. “There's someone on the phone for you.” I picked it up. “Caspian.” There was nothing on the other end. Jus

ARIAHe pulled away so fast I almost fell forward.Air filled my lungs in a violent rush, burning all the way down. I bent over, hands on my knees, dragging it in like a drowning woman. He brushed his palms off, as though I was something sticky he couldn’t wait to get rid of.When I looked up, he was smiling down at me.And not the kind of smile that belonged to a man who’d just slammed a woman into a wall and squeezed the life out of her.It was warm, even ordinary. The kind of smile you’d see on a man in a park holding his kid’s hand, telling them they could get ice cream after lunch.Which somehow made it worse.“I really like you,” he said, softly, almost soothing. Like we were having tea together and he wasn’t still standing beside me, with the full threat that he could explode again. I shoved my shoulder into his side. “Back the fuck away from me.” He chuckled, sweeping my hair behind my ears. “See what I said? You’re funny, I like that sharp tongue. I’d like you to be able t
