Penulis: Nameless

Chapter 1

Penulis: Nameless
My mom, Lilianna Taverner, kept nagging me over the phone. "Maeve is getting married next month. What do you think we should give her? I've been thinking about it forever, but I just can't decide."

"What? Mom, I don't have time to think about this right now. I'm watching a suspect!"

"Just help me think of something. I really have no one else to ask. Do you think we should get her a bracelet?"

I took a deep breath and forced myself to stay calm. "Mom, catching suspects is serious business. We've already been watching this place for six hours. Can we talk about the gift after I'm done here?"

"But I'm worried we won't have enough time! I just want to decide soon. We have to give Maeve something nice for her wedding."

"Mom! I really can't talk about this right now. Just pick something useful, like a home appliance or something."

I was getting anxious. Every few seconds, I glanced toward the suspect's house.

"A home appliance? That would be a terrible gift. She's not even remodeling her house. Are you saying we should give her a refrigerator? Don't brush me off. Think about it again." Lilianna still refused to give up.

"Mom, just pick a few things first. I'll help you decide when I get home, okay?" I tried my best to stay patient.

"Fine. But don't forget! Call me as soon as your assignment is over."

Lilianna finally gave in.

After I hung up, I wanted to shut off my phone. But after thinking about it, I switched it to vibrate instead.

As a policeman, I could get a new assignment at any time. Our captain had made it clear that our phones could never be turned off or put on silent, so vibrate was the only option.

Once I got my emotions under control, I crouched down and slipped back into the patrol car. I focused on watching the suspect's house.

But about five minutes later, my phone started vibrating like crazy again.

I was so annoyed. I had completely forgotten that Lilianna always kept calling until someone picked up.

I should have just turned off my phone.

Captain Derek Cole glanced at me and helplessly waved me away, telling me to settle it first.

I ducked into a corner and answered the call again. Trying hard not to lose my temper, I said, "Mom, what is it this time?"

"I've been thinking, and I think jewelry would be a nice gift too. Do you think we should get her a bracelet or a necklace?"

Lilianna had no idea how desperate I was.

"Mom! We're tracking a serial killer gang! This is not a small matter! Please, just wait until I get home before deciding what to buy, okay?"

I couldn't stop myself from raising my voice. Then I quickly covered my mouth, afraid someone nearby might hear me.

"Okay, fine. We'll talk it over after you're done."

Lilianna finally hung up, and I let out a sigh of relief.

The suspect looked like he was about to leave the house, so I decided to turn off my phone. I couldn't risk Lilianna calling me again at the worst possible moment.

When I got back into the car, Derek glanced at me and let out a quiet sigh. "Henry, you're one of our key guys. For tonight's operation, you'll be leading the charge!"

All the hurt and anger I had been holding inside finally exploded. My eyes were red, and my voice was shaking."You've been like this my whole life! Whenever you want me to do something, I must do it! Have you ever thought about how I feel? Do you even know what I want? You always say you're doing this for my own good, but you didn't even know what kind of person she was! All you ever do is push me to get married. Did you ever ask if I even wanted to?"I couldn't hold back my tears. My voice grew increasingly hoarse.Lilianna completely broke down when she heard me.She saw the judgmental looks from the people around us and my red, tearful eyes. Then she suddenly started crying too."I just wanted you to have someone by your side..."She cried hard, tears constantly running down her face."I... I really thought she was a good person. I didn't ask enough questions. I was just in too much of a hurry..."She crawled over and reached for my hand but then pulled back. She kept crying."Henr

"The police station is fine too! My husband and I used to date out in the fields!"Olivia was stunned by my words. She stared at me in shock. "Officer Taverner, what are you talking about?""You really don't remember?" I suddenly raised my voice."You're the owner of Serenity Springs. When I arrested you last year, you told me that if I let you go, you'd make it up to me in another way and make sure I was satisfied. Do you remember now?"As I spoke, I stepped closer until she was backed against the glass door. The shock on her face quickly turned into fear.Everyone in the lobby was stunned.Olivia's lips began to tremble."You... You've got the wrong person... I'm not..."More than angry, I felt hurt. But I still forced myself not to cry.Lilianna, who always claimed she wanted the best for me, had actually found someone like this for me.Olivia suddenly shouted. "I'm going to sue you for defamation!"I had planned to let her go, but she just had to make trouble.I gave her a cold gla

Thinking about it made me feel terrible. Then I suddenly remembered that Lilianna had said she would report me the next day.We had been working on a rotating schedule these past few days, so our hours weren't fixed. But I happened to be scheduled for duty the next day.I couldn't stop wondering if she would really show up.The next morning, I got out of bed nervously and kept sneaking glances at Lilianna.Thankfully, she showed no sign of getting dressed or going anywhere even when I was about to leave.I breathed a sigh of relief. I knew it. She had only been angry when she said it yesterday. If she really went to the police station and caused a scene, she would disrupt the department's work. It would also be extremely embarrassing for me while I was on duty.Nothing happened that morning. But just when I thought I could finally relax, my phone rang again."Didn't you say you were cutting me out of your life? Why are you calling me again? Didn't I tell you not to call me while I'm w

"I'll go home, but only if you agree to go on a blind date."I suddenly stopped what I was doing. I didn't say what I originally wanted to say. Instead, my face darkened as I replied, "Then you can sleep here tonight.""He's unbelievable! He actually wants his own mother to sleep on the streets. I worked so hard to raise you. You're already 30 years old. If you still don't find a wife, what are you going to do in the future? If you don't have a wife and children, who will take care of you when you're old? Do you want to end up being mistreated by nursing home workers?"My voice turned cold. "Who said having children means you won't be mistreated by caregivers? When I get old, you don't have to worry about me. If you think being single makes you look bad, you can move out too. Maybe you'll feel better that way."Lilianna suddenly stood up, grabbed my collar, and screamed while crying."I'm just worried about your future! Is that wrong? You're trying to kick me out, aren't you? You ungra

The man heard her, spat on the ground at once, then turned and ran.People in the alley scattered in every direction. Residents from the nearby apartment building also started looking out their windows, curious about what was happening."Damn!"My teammates cursed in shock before immediately chasing after him.I felt completely embarrassed. I rushed forward, trying to cover her mouth. But she was too fast. By the time I reached her, she had already finished shouting.I didn't want to waste any more time, so I immediately ran after the suspect.Maybe it was because my adrenaline was through the roof, but I ran so fast that I almost felt like I was floating.I gritted my teeth and charged through the fruit stand the suspect had knocked over, the bicycles he had pushed down, and the drink bottles scattered all over the ground. In the end, I actually reached him before all my teammates and tackled him to the ground.I finally relaxed when my hand touched the handcuffs on my belt. Richard pushed his glasses up and looked at me with a faint smile, as if he knew everything."Henry, come to my office for a moment."After saying that, he walked past me without even looking back. I was left standing there, completely frozen.Derek patted my shoulder and sighed."Henry, just tell the truth. We still have a chance to catch him. Don't blame yourself too much. But when you get home, you really need to talk to your mom. I don't know how she got my number. And I hope she won't call you during an operation unless it's something truly urgent."I nodded repeatedly.Lilianna probably went through my phone and saved Derek's number.I thanked Derek and walked toward Richard's office with a heavy heart. I felt terrible. If it weren't for Lilianna's phone call, we definitely would have caught that man.I was worried that after escaping, he might commit another crime alone. The more I thought about it, the more anxious I became. I grabbed the edge of my jacket so tightly that my kn
