Chapter 7

Author: Briar Sage
The hall fell into silence instantly. Everyone looked at Myra like she was an idiot.

The bald old man panicked and quickly stepped back.

But Henry didn't move. He swirled the red wine in his glass, watching me with faint amusement.

I released Henry's arm and walked forward in my five-inch heels until I stood in front of Myra.

Myra was still screaming like a madwoman.

"What are you looking at? Believe it or not, I'll have Jasper—"

A sharp slap rang through the entire hall.

I had put all

This was exactly what I wanted.I used the identity of Mrs. Quinton to quietly expand my investments behind the scenes. The money I extracted from Henry was funneled through complex financial channels into shell companies I had registered overseas. With each passing day, my account balance grew, and so did my sense of security. I had never felt anything like it before. Men would change, and love would fade, but money never betrayed me. It was the only constant I could rely on.…My due date arrived, and I delivered a baby boy at a top private hospital. He was the first grandson of the Quinton family.Edward was overjoyed and fulfilled his promise on the spot. 20% of the company's shares were transferred into the child's name, with me as the trustee. Those shares were the lifeline of Quinton Group.During my postpartum recovery, Henry stayed by my bedside every day, playing the role of the perfect devoted husband. He believed that our little family of three had finally become co

The police, who were lying in wait, entered the venue."You're Myra, right? We received a report accusing you of extortion. You'll need to come with us."I had called the police.I watched as Myra was handcuffed and led away, then looped my arm through Henry's and smiled brightly at the cameras.Henry watched as I handled everything cleanly and decisively. A flicker of caution crossed his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by admiration.Only a ruthless and decisive woman was worthy of becoming the matron of the Quinton family.During the toasting segment, several wealthy socialites looked at me with subtle disdain."Ms. Walsh, you certainly know how to play the game. How clever of you, using a child to climb your way up the social ladder."I rested a hand over my slightly raised abdomen and smiled gracefully."It may sound crude to rely on a child, but it works. It's still better than those who can't even bear one and end up letting outsiders step in, don't you think?"Their

Henry barked, "Is the child even mine? Or did you plan this from the beginning, trying to trap me with some bastard you conceived?"He clamped his hand around my throat, cutting off my breath. My face turned red instantly. Tears streamed down my cheeks, but I didn't explain myself or say anything. At a time like this, I knew that if I tried to explain myself, it would only sound like an excuse. Silence in the face of grievance was my sharpest weapon.Only when I was on the verge of blacking out did he finally let go.I collapsed to the floor, gasping for air. Then I reached into my bag, pulled out a document, and threw it straight at him.It was a paternity test I had prepared long ago—or more precisely, an amniocentesis test. Although it was still early in the pregnancy, I had bribed the doctor to fast-track it as an urgent case."Henry, you're disgusting," I said hoarsely, staring at him with utter despair."I'm leaving not because I feel guilty, but because I refuse to let m

He swirled the red wine in his glass, watching me with faint amusement.I released Henry's arm and walked forward in my five-inch heels until I stood in front of Myra.Myra was still screaming like a madwoman. "What are you looking at? Believe it or not, I'll have Jasper—"A sharp slap rang through the entire hall. I had put all my strength into it. Myra's face was whipped to the side, swelling almost immediately as blood trickled from the corner of her mouth. She froze, clutching her face in shock and staring at me in disbelief."Did you just hit me?""Yes, I did," I said coldly, staring straight at her. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried clearly across the entire hall. "Open your damn eyes and take a good look. This is Henry Quinton, CEO of Quinton Group. I am his fiancee. Who exactly do you think you are to

Henry lit a cigarette and dropped the act entirely. A crushing pressure radiated off him."Sam, you're a pretty good actor. You're better than those women who just want a sugar daddy. At least you were willing to invest. So tell me, how much do you want? I'll pay you 20 times that five thousand dollars you spent, and then you can get out."He flicked a check onto my bare body as if tossing scraps to a beggar.I looked down at the 100-thousand-dollar check. It was enough to cover ten years of struggle, but I didn't pick it up.Anger flared inside me. It was not only the betrayal, but the way he reduced my "professionalism" to a joke.I jumped off the bed without bothering to cover myself and grabbed the heavy glass ashtray from the table.I slammed it hard against the floor, sending shards of glass scattering everywhere.Henry narrowed his eyes. "Not enough?""Go to hell!" I roared, glaring at him with bloodshot, unhinged eyes.I yanked the ruby ring off my finger. It was a fla

On the night of Henry's birthday, torrential rain poured down.I stood at the entrance of his shabby house, holding a cake box in one hand and a suit bag in the other. I didn't have an umbrella as I had deliberately not brought one.Rainwater streamed down my hair, soaking into my skin until my whole body trembled from the cold.I stood there from 7:00 pm until 12:00 am. My legs went numb, and my lips turned a deep shade of purple. Still, I did not move a single step.Myra posted a photo of herself partying at a nightclub on her social media, with the caption, "I heard that idiot Sam is waiting in the rain for that ex-convict. What a desperate loser. Serves her right if she freezes to death."At 1:00 am, a Maybach stopped at the entrance of the alley. Henry walked over soon after, reeking of alcohol. He had just returned from the Quinton family's banquet. He was dressed in a bespoke suit worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, looking sharp and commanding. Before entering the a
