 1. Alone...

It was their anniversary night — hers and his. She'd prepared everything. The cakes, waffles and his favorite dishes, just the way he liked them. And she waited, at the dining just like she's always done in the past years.

Eight. Nine. Ten. He wasn't yet back. Dahlia gave a start. Did he forget? But even if he did, she'd called him earlier to remind him and he'd told her to wait. Anxious, she stood from the dining and quickly ringed him up. However, all she got was the automated voice of the female robot. She tried again and again but only the robotic voice answered.

Dahlia felt her heart turn cold with dread. She clenched her fists tightly as though that would squash the ominous feeling brewing in her chest.

Just then, the front door clicked. Dahlia felt her heart skip just a beat, her eyes lighting up and without thought, she rushed to the door.

"Hey honey--" but her voice faltered when she saw who it was. It was just the butler, Ma'am Camille.

"Camie" she caught her speech in time.

"Mrs Voss, is there a problem? Do you need anything?" she asked.

Dahlia allowed her lips to stretch into a tight smile which felt painful. "No, I'm okay" she said and stepped back. She inhaled deeply trying to calm herself down.

"What happened then?" Dahlia asked. "You're suddenly back here".

"Oh...uh..." Ma'am Camille began, her voice hesitant.

"What happened Camie?" Dahlia pressed, her voice trembling.

"It's the master" the butler said.

Dahlia clamped her teeth tight. She didn't know why, but...her heart kept pounding like a thousand war drums in her chest.

"He says he won't be coming back tonight. Miss Vale got into an accident" the butler explained.

Miss Vale. Her. Again.

Dahlia swallowed. She tried to speak but couldn't find the words. She simply nodded with a shaky, "Mm" to what the butler had just said.

"Goodnight Mrs Voss" she said and left.

Dahlia didn't move. It was as though she had been nailed to that spot. She tried to clench her fists but her hands only trembled.

After a minute or so, she got herself and immediately dialed her husband's number. Yet, it was still the automated voice. Just then, a notification slipped in. She looked at her phone. It was an I*******m notification with the username, @Luce#1. It was her husband's. She quickly clicked on it.

Her breathing shuddered with every scroll, the caption still hammering in her mind, "#Luce#1#Shay#eatingnightcookies#.

Tears brimmed the edges of her eyes as she looked at the pictures. Her husband, Lucien was sitted on the hospital bed beside Sasha, feeding her cookies. There was even a video where he was coaxing her to eat the cookies. And those were the cookies she'd actually made for him to have as a side snack for lunch!

Dahlia tried swallowing but it was so painful that she let out a tight cry. Her legs finally gave way, dropping her to the ground. She clutched her heart as if she could hold the pain.

"Why...why Lucien...? Why would you do this...? Why...."

Dahlia stayed in that position for a long time, losing track of time. Every time she'd spent with him flashed before her eyes and she realized, perhaps this was her memory alone. Lifting herself from the floor, she walked towards the stairs and took it. She was about to enter her room but her feet seemed to have a mind of their own. She found herself standing in the middle of her husband's room. Come to think of it, they'd never shared a room. He'd told her that he needed his own space to work because she usually distracts him. She remembered blushing when he'd said this but now, that was the most the ridiculous excuse she's ever heard.

She looked around, looking for nothing in particular till her gaze landed on the half-open bottom drawer. It was open. And something was in it. Dahlia eyed it and turned to leave. But then, curiosity suddenly crept in and an inner voice that kept telling her to "check it out". Perhaps, she was afraid of what it might be but still...

She moved and knelt beside the drawer. She pulled it out further and picked up the envelope. She opened it, her hands jittery with every movement. Then she took out the contents in it.

The "DIVORCE AGREEMENT" inscribed boldly on top made her breath hitch. She'd had a hunch but, she never expected it to be true. This was...her worst fear. These papers.

She raked her gaze which was already blurred with tears through the papers, down to the signature spot. And there it was. Her husband's powerful calligraphic signature sprawled under the spot of "Husband".

Dahlia slapped her hand over her lips and sobbed. Tear drops plopped onto the signature and she secretly hoped it would wipe the signature or maybe turn acidic and burn the papers. But none of this happened. And she finally realized one thing. She's been alone all these years.

  • Her Exodus, His Regret.    50. The enemy of my enemy

    50. The enemy of my enemy The Vale family mansion was already alive with quiet activity when Sasha arrived the following morning. The living room looked the same as always. Wide, elegant and expensive in a calm way. Tall windows let the morning light spill across the marble floor, touching the dark couches arranged carefully around a glass table. Sasha walked in slowly, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor as her eyes scanned the room. It's been a while since she last came here. "Miss Vale" the butler— an elderly man— called out, his head lowering in greeting. "Welcome home".Sasha's lips lifted slightly. "Where's my father?""Mr Vale and Madam Vale are waiting for you in the living room". Sasha hand clenched around the handle of her bag. She heaved a slow sigh before walking towards the living room. "Father, Mother" Sasha called the moment she walked into the living room, her head dipping. "I'm home". A cold scoff followed her words. Her body stilled. She raise

    49. When the night is too calm...Liam stood at the veranda of his room, a cigarette stick in resting loosely between his fingers. At intervals, he took calm drags from it, his eyes staring into the starry sky. His mind swirled around what Lucien had said that morning. 'You couldn't get her before. What makes you think you can get her now?''...Yet, your love wasn't strong enough to stop me from marrying her'. Liam's hand tightened around the railings. He shit his eyes slowly, forcing calmness in place. "Fine, I will deal my last card on you brother" he muttered under his breath, a sharp glint of resolution flickering in his eyes. Sam walked in. "Boss""Mm?" "A report" Sam said, his hands clenched tightly at his sides. "What is it?" his voice was hoarse."It's about Miss Winters"His reaction was instant. He faced Sam, eyes softening. "What happened to Dahlia?" he questioned. "Is she alright?""Physically yes, but, there was an enemy attack on her company".Liam's eyes narrow

    48. Mr Intruder...At St Greg Medicals."Miss Vale, you will be discharged this evening" the doctor said, face beaming. Sasha almost rolled her eyes. Yet she forced a smile. "Thank you doc""You just need to be careful not to open the wounds. The treatment has closed them up a little but anything strenuous could get you in trouble".Sasha nodded not saying anything. "Then, have a nice day Miss Vale".Sasha nodded, obviously bored. The doctor left. Someone else stepped in. "Fiona" Sasha called. "You're finally here". The young girl named Fiona looked up, face perked with a hidden excitement. "Of course Miss Vale".Sasha let out a soft chuckle. Then stood. She strolled slowly towards the windows, trailing inconsistent lines on the glass. "Dahlia Winters has been gaining too much confidence lately. Why don't we give her a little shove?""What should I do Miss?"Sasha looked at Fiona, a dubious smile crossing her face. "That project, why don't you look into it a bit for me?" Fiona

    47. "She chose me once..."Lucien's hands tightened at his sides as he watched her leave. Did she realize? He had built this place for her.Yet she walked through it like a stranger. His head lowered, something close to defeat resting on his shoulders. He heaved a deep sigh. Jace appeared at his side. "Boss""Mm?""The car is ready".Lucien nodded. His eyes shifted once to the place where Dahlia had left from. No matter what it takes Dahlia, I will get you back. You can only be my woman and no one else's. Few minutes later, he left the villa. Liam's house stood high above the city, all glass and pale stone. The inside was calm and still, the kind of silence that made every sound feel louder. Afternoon light filtered through the wide windows and settled across the room.Sam walked in. "Sir, your brother is here" he announced quietly. Liam's brows arched. "He's in such a haste" he murmured, amused. "Let him in" the calm order came. "There would be no need for that" Lucien said

    46. Things he remembered...Silence draped quietly over the room after Lucien stepped out. Dahlia's body staggered slightly as though the weight of everything finally came crashing down. Gaux caught her immediately, steadying her. "Miss" Gaux muttered, worry etched on her face.Dahlia said nothing. Her gaze only shifted to the closed door. Lucien. Her hands curled on her thighs, jaw locking in. This proximity....she wouldn't allow it again! Gaux heaved a deep sigh. She brought the bags she came with, unpacking what was inside. "Miss, these are your change of clothes" Gaux said as she laid them on the bed. "I also brought some loose clothes along, in case you decide not to be at the office today" she added. Dahlia sighed. She glanced at them, then lowered her face tiredly into her palms. "Where are my clothes from last night?""Oh" Gaux gasped softly as she reached for one of the bags. "Here it is Miss".Dahlia took it from her. She brought out the contents and began a vague in

A warmth pooled in her chest and spread through her limbs, making her skin tingle where she hadn't even realized it could. Images flickered behind her closed eyes, sharp and vivid.A man's body, carved and impossibly close. The man inched closer. And closer. His face...his face...Her eyes snapped open. She gasped. There was a man beside her. A man. Shirtless. She tilted her head back, taking him in.
