1. Alone...
It was their anniversary night — hers and his. She'd prepared everything. The cakes, waffles and his favorite dishes, just the way he liked them. And she waited, at the dining just like she's always done in the past years.
Eight. Nine. Ten. He wasn't yet back. Dahlia gave a start. Did he forget? But even if he did, she'd called him earlier to remind him and he'd told her to wait. Anxious, she stood from the dining and quickly ringed him up. However, all she got was the automated voice of the female robot. She tried again and again but only the robotic voice answered.
Dahlia felt her heart turn cold with dread. She clenched her fists tightly as though that would squash the ominous feeling brewing in her chest.
Just then, the front door clicked. Dahlia felt her heart skip just a beat, her eyes lighting up and without thought, she rushed to the door.
"Hey honey--" but her voice faltered when she saw who it was. It was just the butler, Ma'am Camille.
"Camie" she caught her speech in time.
"Mrs Voss, is there a problem? Do you need anything?" she asked.
Dahlia allowed her lips to stretch into a tight smile which felt painful. "No, I'm okay" she said and stepped back. She inhaled deeply trying to calm herself down.
"What happened then?" Dahlia asked. "You're suddenly back here".
"Oh...uh..." Ma'am Camille began, her voice hesitant.
"What happened Camie?" Dahlia pressed, her voice trembling.
"It's the master" the butler said.
Dahlia clamped her teeth tight. She didn't know why, but...her heart kept pounding like a thousand war drums in her chest.
"He says he won't be coming back tonight. Miss Vale got into an accident" the butler explained.
Miss Vale. Her. Again.
Dahlia swallowed. She tried to speak but couldn't find the words. She simply nodded with a shaky, "Mm" to what the butler had just said.
"Goodnight Mrs Voss" she said and left.
Dahlia didn't move. It was as though she had been nailed to that spot. She tried to clench her fists but her hands only trembled.
After a minute or so, she got herself and immediately dialed her husband's number. Yet, it was still the automated voice. Just then, a notification slipped in. She looked at her phone. It was an I*******m notification with the username, @Luce#1. It was her husband's. She quickly clicked on it.
Her breathing shuddered with every scroll, the caption still hammering in her mind, "#Luce#1#Shay#eatingnightcookies#.
Tears brimmed the edges of her eyes as she looked at the pictures. Her husband, Lucien was sitted on the hospital bed beside Sasha, feeding her cookies. There was even a video where he was coaxing her to eat the cookies. And those were the cookies she'd actually made for him to have as a side snack for lunch!
Dahlia tried swallowing but it was so painful that she let out a tight cry. Her legs finally gave way, dropping her to the ground. She clutched her heart as if she could hold the pain.
"Why...why Lucien...? Why would you do this...? Why...."
Dahlia stayed in that position for a long time, losing track of time. Every time she'd spent with him flashed before her eyes and she realized, perhaps this was her memory alone. Lifting herself from the floor, she walked towards the stairs and took it. She was about to enter her room but her feet seemed to have a mind of their own. She found herself standing in the middle of her husband's room. Come to think of it, they'd never shared a room. He'd told her that he needed his own space to work because she usually distracts him. She remembered blushing when he'd said this but now, that was the most the ridiculous excuse she's ever heard.
She looked around, looking for nothing in particular till her gaze landed on the half-open bottom drawer. It was open. And something was in it. Dahlia eyed it and turned to leave. But then, curiosity suddenly crept in and an inner voice that kept telling her to "check it out". Perhaps, she was afraid of what it might be but still...
She moved and knelt beside the drawer. She pulled it out further and picked up the envelope. She opened it, her hands jittery with every movement. Then she took out the contents in it.
The "DIVORCE AGREEMENT" inscribed boldly on top made her breath hitch. She'd had a hunch but, she never expected it to be true. This was...her worst fear. These papers.
She raked her gaze which was already blurred with tears through the papers, down to the signature spot. And there it was. Her husband's powerful calligraphic signature sprawled under the spot of "Husband".
Dahlia slapped her hand over her lips and sobbed. Tear drops plopped onto the signature and she secretly hoped it would wipe the signature or maybe turn acidic and burn the papers. But none of this happened. And she finally realized one thing. She's been alone all these years.
84. VIP "I thought you loved her" Sasha had asked. "I did. I still do. But I only just realized that sometimes, it's still okay not to have everything" he paused. His jaw worked quietly. "Sometimes, it's just okay to be happy because they're happy". That was his reply. Calm. Soft. Nothing like the man who stood in her living room some minutes ago. Sasha stood there for a full minute after he left. Whatever had happened some minutes ago was the least of what she expected. Liam hadn't reacted as strongly as she had thought he would. He didn't lash out. He didn't growl at her and sound crazy and tell her that he would kill her if she doesn't stop going after Dahlia. He was cool headed. And Sasha didn't like it. In fact, for some reason, she preferred the crazy Liam who was twisted and did things that harmed others. But now...Her hands tightened at her sides. "It's all that bitch's fault" she murmured. Her gaze lingered on the space where he had stood. She shut her eyes and i
83. Whatever this is....The black SUV pulled to a quiet halt in front of Dahlia's penthouse. A click and Dahlia was out of the car. Lucien followed. Neither of them spoke immediately. "I'm home now" Dahlia said, trying to keep her eyes on Lucien's. "I know that" he said. "I just need to make sure you got in safely". Dahlia heaved a small sigh. "You're overdoing it" "Overdoing what?""This". Her hand moved vaguely between them. "Whatever this is."Lucien didn't answer immediately. Instead, he took a step forward. "You almost left this morning."Dahlia blinked. "Lucien—""You almost walked out of my life before breakfast." His voice wasn't dramatic. If anything, it was too calm. "Forgive me if I'm not pretending that didn't happen."Her lips twitched into a pout—something she hadn't planned.Without another word, she turned on her heel and headed toward the entrance. She made it three steps. Then stopped.Lucien watched her turn back around."Don't forget to take your medicine.
82. Not the headlinesThe sky was already dark when Dahlia finally raised her head from her laptop. Her eyes met Lucien in that instant. He was sleeping. She almost chuckled at the sight.Something happened in her chest that she didn't quite plan. But didn't hate either.Right. The doctor had said three days but this was just the second day and he was already moving around. A small sigh left her lips. She turned on her seat and stood quietly, her eyes catching the trail of activity downstairs through the office window. Cars flying past. A couple coming out of a cafe across the street. A truck halting in front of a high-end store. Then her eyes went to the billboard screen on one of the skyscrapers and she went still for a fraction of a second. There she was. Sasha, smiling broadly at the cameras, saying something Dahlia couldn't catch from here. But she didn't need to.The headline already said enough.Sasha Vale, the new CEO of Vale Enterprises, effective as of today.Dahlia only arc
81. Still here....She got ready early. Not because she had somewhere urgent to be.Because staying felt dangerous. She stood in front of the mirror in the guest room, smoothing the front of her black dress, checking that the silver sandals were buckled correctly, adjusting the small handbag against her arm. Everything about her appearance said composed and ready.Everything underneath said otherwise. She looked at her reflection for a moment longer than she needed to.Then she left the room. The manor was quiet at this hour. Morning light came through the tall windows in long pale strips, touching the floors and walls gently. Somewhere downstairs a staff member moved through a corridor. The house was waking up around her and she was already dressed to leave it.She started toward the staircase. Then stopped. She hadn't seen Lucien. Not once this morning. Not even in passing. She told herself it didn't matter. He was recovered. He looked it. She had already said what needed to be said
80. He Said Okay...."How dare you?!" the shrill aged voice of Mr. Vale rang through the hallway the moment he saw Sasha walk through the entrance. His hand shot out, hurling a glass tumbler toward his daughter.Sasha dodged it.But one of the shards somehow still found its way to her wrist, giving it a small red cut.Fiona gasped. "Miss—"Sasha raised a hand without looking at her. Silencing her. She walked deeper into the living room where her parents sat and took the chair opposite them. Her father seemed to have aged overnight. Her mother had that particular look on her face, the one that had always made Sasha feel like an inconvenience wearing a dress.Sasha's throat clogged for a second.Whatever wrong had she done. What exactly. Was it just merely her existence? She lowered her gaze to the small cut on her wrist. Did nothing about it."What's the plan now Sasha?" her mother's voice came. "After you take over the company, what next?"Sasha raised her head and met her mother's ey
79. This Feels Refreshing "Any objections?" Sasha asked. She didn't look up from the folder in her hands. Just flipped a page. Unhurried. Three hands went up at the once. Sasha paused. Glanced at them. Mr Gerald. Mr Renwick. Mr Chad. A small smile rested on her lips. She lowered the folder slightly, and looked at them now. Slowly. "I would have been disappointed if there was none" she said. She nodded at Fiona. Fiona stepped forward and pressed a button on the laptop that was at the side of the room. The screen behind Sasha lit up. A footage. No. Three footages rather. No one spoke while the videos played. Nobody moved either. The boardroom was the kind of quiet that happens when a room full of powerful people suddenly understands that they are no longer the most powerful in it. Renwick went pale within the first thirty seconds.Chad's hand came up to his mouth.Gerald sat very still with his eyes on the table. When it ended, Sasha closed the folder and set it down."Doe
34. The smile he lost....Morning came quickly. Too quickly. Dahlia stood at the veranda, a cup of her favorite coffee in hand. Her mind was everywhere, thoughts scattering in every direction no matter how hard she tried to keep them together. Her phone chimed. She sighed in relief. A distractio
32. Nothing Exhilarating...Their eyes rested on each other's—Lucien and Dahlia— for just a fraction of a second. In that breathless pause, everything unsaid pressed between them. Then they stood. Elegant. Composed. Untouchable. Exactly the way two people with too much history were expected to
31. Glances, Gold and Glasses...The dinner was meant to mark a new beginning. But instead, it gathered too many unfinished things in one room. The venue sat high above the city, glass walls holding in soft gold lights and quiet power. Executives from DAH Global mingled with members of the Voss E
29. Home, on the line...Liam stood there for a moment too long. His gaze flickered once to his reflection in the pool before resting on the spot his mother had left from. A marriage proposal. And not just any proposal. But one to the woman he has ever loved. Dahlia Winters. An offer he wasn't sup
