New Home, New Cravings

Ariana’s POV

After the meeting, I was on edge about how my encounter with Sebastian had ended. But the moment I saw Jason running toward me, everything melted away from my heart.

“Mommy!” his tiny voice sounded as he bolted towards me inside my hotel lounge.

I barely had time to open my arms before he crashed into me. The force of it almost knocked me backwards.

I laughed through the tears already gathering in my eyes and hugged him tightly. God. I had missed him so much.

Chapter 41The Retrieval AttemptAriana’s POVThe drive to Jason’s school took eleven minutes. It felt like eleven years.Kylan drove with his hands locked on the wheel. His jaw stayed tight the whole way. Ariana kept the phone pressed to her ear. Patricia’s voice was sharp and fast on the other end.“Stay calm when you get there,” Patricia said. “Whatever papers they showed the school won’t hold up. But if you walk in yelling, you’d hand Sebastian the story he wants. And you will be tagged the Unstable mother. Big scene. Please don't give him that.”“Someone tried to take my son from his school.”“I know. Please walk in like a woman who has full custody and nothing to prove to them.”The parking lot came into view. She stepped out of the car before Kylan fully stopped. Her heels hit the pavement hard as she headed for the entrance.Principal Davies met her at the front office. Middle-aged, with kind eyes, the calm of someone who’d seen a hundred custody messes before.“He’s safe,” Da

Blood MoneySebastian’s POVSebastian didn’t sleep. He stayed in his office chair until the sky outside went from black to grey. The number of the fourth account sat glowing on his laptop screen. He couldn’t look away from it.Eight years. His mother had been taking money from the family for eight years. And he had given her access the whole time. He had trusted her the way a son trusts a mother who buried her husband and kept the company running through pure will.He thought about every talk they had ever had. Every dinner where she praised his choices and gently pushed him in certain directions. Those directions always seemed to help her more than the company. He remembered the ultimatum she gave him about Ariana. “Get rid of her or I’ll do it myself.”He had thought she meant public pressure. Manipulation. Cruelty dressed up as worry. He never imagined she had planned a full scandal. That she had framed an innocent employee. That she had paid a woman to stay close to him and drain

The Warehouse Ariana’s POV The address led her to a quiet part of the industrial district she hadn't been to in years. Most of the warehouses were empty. The windows were boarded up with plywood softening from the rain. Streetlights were long ago abandoned in this city. As usual, she parked two blocks away and walked the rest of the way. Her phone was already in her coat pocket, recording, screen dark, mic on. She’d told Kylan she needed air.A lie. A necessary one. A mandatory one. If he had known, he would have gone with her and stood like a wall outside. Camilla had been quite clear. Alone. Patricia had argued against it in the courthouse parking garage, her voice low and tight. “This is exactly what she wants. Isolation. No witness. No recording. Whatever happens becomes her word against yours.”“I’ll record it,” Ariana said. “She won’t know.”“That’s not a plan. That’s a hope.”“It’s all the time we have.”Patricia hadn’t liked it. Kylan would have liked it even less. But s

The Courthouse Steps The Courthouse StepsAriana's POVThe courthouse hallway smelled like old wood and a cleaning solution. Ariana stood there in her black dress, the one that made her look like she had everything together, even though her hands couldn't stop shaking.Patricia, her lawyer, checked her watch. Eight forty-five. Fifteen minutes.“Breathe.’ Patricia said. She wasn't looking at Ariana. She was looking at her tablet, scrolling through something that made her frown."We've got this." Kylan stood beside her without touching her, but Ariana could feel him there. Six years of him being there. Six years of showing up, staying steady, never once asking for more than she could give.Until last night.Formally designated as guardian. The words kept looping through her head."They're here," Skylar whispered from near the elevator. Ariana couldn't help but notice Sebastian walk in first like a man who belonged in courtrooms, who had lawyers on speed dial and knew exactly how the

The Question He AskedKylan's POVPatricia Chen’s words followed me out of her office and into the car, sitting heavy in my chest the entire drive home. Formally designated as his guardian. The phrase seemed huge, too huge to be looking at too closely, with everything else already on the verge of collapsing around us.I found Ariana in the kitchen when I got home, flour streaked across her sleeves; Jason sat on a stool beside her, stirring something with a lot more enthusiasm than precision."We're making cookies," Jason said, as if that explained the condition of the kitchen, which was like a flour-based crime scene. "I can see that." Ariana glanced up at me, something flickering behind her eyes that told me she'd read my expression before I'd said a single word. "Everything okay?"I nodded at Jason. We'll talk later,” I said. She knew. As always, she knew. She turned her back on the bowl. “Okay, Chef. Add the chocolate chips.” Jason dumped in way more than the recipe called

Underneath Ariana's POV I didn't sleep that night. Instead, I sat at my kitchen table with my laptop open, pulling up everything I could find on Sebastian's movement over the past week. The car outside Jason's school. He came to my office this time to ask about my son.The phone call that had rattled everything loose in my chest I was still trying to nail back down.Kylan found me there at three in the morning, still in yesterday's clothes, coffee cold beside me.“You need to sleep,” he said, not as a question.“ I need to think.”He pulled out a chair across from me and sat close enough that I could see the exhaustion shadowing his features. You're not thinking. You're spiralling.”“He knows about Jason; now everything changes.”“Does it? His voice was calm and steady, the way it always goes when the world is tilting.“Jason is still five years old. He still goes to school. He still asks questions about dinosaurs and volcanoes. The only thing that's changed is Sebastian knows. T
