Chapter 4

Author: Lightcat
Gregory's name flashed across the screen as the phone buzzed nonstop, but I ignored it. His texts kept coming nonstop, asking where Mom and I were and why I wasn't answering.

As I read each text, my fingers trembled, and my heart swirled with a bitter mix of emotions. He had finally thought to check on Mom and me, but it was too late.

I glanced at his name on the screen one last time before turning off the phone.

In the days that followed, I cut myself off from the world, hiding away in a corner of the city. Since Mom passed, I hadn't truly rested once. I was completely drained. My eyelids felt impossibly heavy, and all I wanted was to sleep.

I tried to sort through my thoughts and find a way to begin again. However, reality felt like an airtight net, suffocating me.

Gregory—the name that once held all meaning for me—had turned into my darkest nightmare.

I never expected that the man I loved and gave my all to had been orchestrating a huge lie from the very beginning.

I had met

"Who built this new memorial for Mom?" Ryan asked softly, reading the hesitation on my face.I didn't have an answer. I truly didn't. I would never have imagined anyone would create such a grand tribute for Mom. Then my thoughts immediately settled on one person—no one else could have done this.On Mom's memorial was carved her likeness from her youth, with a quiet smile, as if life had never touched her with hardship. Candles and flowers were carefully arranged in front, clearly showing that someone visited often to honor her memory.I didn't care who had done this out of sentiment. I carefully took out the photos I'd collected over the years and walked her through the places I'd visited, the people I'd known, and the memories I'd made along the way. I reassured her that I was fine and that she had nothing to worry about. I also introduced Ryan, hoping she could feel my joy from afar.As I held up the last photo, a familiar voice came from behind me."Hailey."I turned to se

I was ready to face whatever the future brought, as long as Ryan was by my side. Life after marriage was happy and sweet. We ran the shop together, and whenever business slowed, we traveled and enjoyed everything life had to offer. We traveled farther and saw more of the world's beauty. With every trip, our connection deepened and grew steadier. Ryan taught me that love was built through mutual effort, not endless giving from one side. Our days grew happier with each passing moment. Just when I thought I had completely left the past behind, I happened to see Gregory's public apology on television. He stood before the cameras looking worn and regretful. Even in a tailored suit, the confidence he once carried had faded. What remained was a deep, world-weary fatigue. In front of the press, he read out a long statement he had clearly prepared. "Hailey," he said hoarsely, his voice sincere. "I know I was wrong. I hurt you, and I hurt your mother. Everything I said and everything

I thought time had erased it all, that his name would never reach me again. But somehow, he was still trying to find me.I looked away and distracted myself by lightly swirling the latte. The creamy milk blended with the coffee's bitterness, reflecting the tangled mix of emotions inside me.I pulled myself back to the present, telling myself that my new life couldn't be defined by the past.Over the years, I had changed. I left everything familiar behind, abandoned that land full of pain, and stepped into a completely new world.I set out on a long journey, traveling to the places Mom had once dreamed of. I stepped onto lands she had only known through photographs.I felt the sea breeze on my face on the beaches of Mamba Island. I savored romantic coffees in the streets of Veridia. I witnessed the great migration across the Umbala plains.I took in every landscape with all my heart.Along the way, I met people from all walks of life and listened to countless stories. I slowly be

"She even drove her own mother to suicide. What exactly do you see in a woman like that?" Sophia taunted, clearly trying to erase me completely from Gregory's memories.Gregory's eyes flared with rage as he looked up at her. "Enough, Sophia! What do you know? You have no right to even say her name.""Am I wrong? She even abandoned her own mother for you?" Sophia snapped. Each word cut Gregory's heart like a blade."Nonsense!" Gregory shot back furiously."What is it, Gregory? Stop lying to yourself," Sophia said smugly. "Hailey was only ever interested in your money. She got what she came for, and now she's gone. Don't let her fool you, Gregory. She never loved you.""Shut up!" Gregory roared and slapped her hard across the face."How dare you hit me?" Sophia clutched her cheek, staring at him in disbelief."Get out!" he snapped. Disgust and fury burned in his eyes. Fear surged through her when she met his blazing gaze. In that instant, she realized she had lost him for good.

Under Gregory's relentless questioning, Steven hesitated before answering, "Three days ago, Ms. Jackman submitted her resignation unexpectedly. She claimed she needed to go back to her hometown. I assumed it was done under your instruction."Everyone at the company believed Gregory and I were a couple. As someone rumored to become Gregory's wife, I was treated with utmost courtesy. No one dared to interfere with anything I wanted to do.Before Gregory could speak, Sophia's voice cut through with contempt. "Back to her hometown? She sure runs fast!"Gregory frowned. "What are you doing here?He didn't want Sophia to hear any more than necessary."What's it to you? Afraid I'll get in the way of your reunion with your lover?" Sophia snapped, her voice laced with jealousy."Stop with the nonsense. Are you here on business? If not, leave and don't get in my way!"Sophia was about to explode at his words when a phone call from the assistant came in, bringing news that shocked everyone
