Chapter 12

Autor: Blue Carberry
I didn't stop Colin, but I didn't feel sorry for him either.

"Colin, stop putting on a show," I said, my gaze cold. "If Mom could see you doing this, she'd be disgusted."

He froze, his sobs catching in his throat.

I walked over, picked up the flowers he'd left in front of Mom's grave, then took the ones from Yvonne's hands and threw them both into the trash.

The color drained from their faces.

I stood in front of Mom's headstone.

"Leave, and don't come back here to bother my mom again

Later, I heard about Colin through a mutual friend. After being fired from his company, he'd never really recovered. He'd tried to qualify as a teacher, but people still gossiped about what had happened. Every time he walked into an interview, the pressure became too much, and he'd break down. He stopped going back to our alma mater. He couldn't even bear to hear someone call his name because it reminded him of the way Mom used to say it. Some people said they felt sorry for him, but I never said anything. Did they really think he was the one who deserved sympathy? What about Mom, waiting for them in her hospital bed until the very end? What about me, standing there alone in my wedding suit as I said goodbye to her? When someone did something wrong, there had to be a price to pay. …A year later, I finally returned to my hometown. It was the anniversary of Mom's death, and I brought her favorite lilies and a photograph of the ocean. She'd never seen it while she was ali

I stood in front of Mom's headstone. "Leave, and don't come back here to bother my mom again," I said quietly, but there was no mistaking the finality in my voice. "Don't come looking for me, either. You have no right to ask for her forgiveness."Yvonne's eyes were red when she said, "Nathan… I love you."Those three words were something I'd waited years to hear. She rarely said she loved me. She always told me that real feelings didn't need to be spoken aloud. So whenever she showed me even the smallest bit of tenderness, I'd hold on to it and replay those moments in my mind for d

Two weeks later, I decided to leave the city. Mom was gone, but her presence seemed to linger everywhere. There was the grocer where she always bought her groceries. The bus stop where she'd wait for me after school. The tea olive tree shrub outside our apartment, whose sweet fragrance had always been her favorite. I couldn't bear to face any of it anymore. I just wanted to go somewhere else and learn how to live again. Before I left, I went to Mom's grave. The cemetery was quiet. Wind rustled through the pine trees, filling the silence with a soft, whispering sound. I placed a bouquet of lilies in front of her headstone."Mom, I'm leaving," I said. "I'm going to Southon. It's warmer there."I paused, then smiled faintly. "You used to say that once you retired, you wanted to see the ocean. So I'll go see it for you."I sat against the headstone for a while and talked to her about everything. I told her I'd sold the things we'd bought for the house Yvonne and I were s

That night, Yvonne came looking for me like she was out of her mind. I didn't open the door, so she stood outside and called my name over and over. "Nathan, I didn't know he did it on purpose. I swear I didn't know. I thought he was just scared. I thought we'd still have time if we came a little later. But I was wrong…"Her voice grew hoarser with every word until she was barely able to speak through her tears. "Please open the door," she sobbed. "You can yell at me or hit me… Just don't shut me out."I sat completely still on the other side of the door, holding Mom's photo album against my chest. Yvonne's muffled sobs came through the door. I'd never heard her cry like that before. She'd always been proud, even when things got difficult. She would simply bite back her tears and force herself to keep going. She used to tell me that tears were useless and that all we could do was keep moving forward. But now, she was crying like a child who had been abandoned. I didn't ope

My phone wouldn't stop buzzing with messages from Yvonne. "Nathan, I'm sorry. I'm not asking you to forgive me. Just let me do something for Ms. Brooks, please. I'll take care of her medical bills, the funeral—everything else that still needs to be handled. Please don't carry all of this by yourself."I didn't reply to a single one. When she started calling, I blocked her number. …The next morning, the doorbell rang. When I opened the door, I found a bag of breakfast sitting outside, along with a note. I recognized Yvonne's handwriting. "Your stomach has always been sensitive. Eat something first," the note read. I stared at the note and almost laughed. Of course she knew about my stomach. Back in college, we'd started a business together, and there were days when we were so busy that we'd eat only once. Then one day, my stomach hurt so badly that I ended up doubling over on the floor. She'd taken me to the hospital herself, her eyes red with worry, and promised tha

Yvonne went deathly pale. The bouquet slipped from her hands, scattering white petals across the floor. Colin suddenly dropped to his knees. "Nathan, please let me go in. I'll beg Ms. Brooks to forgive me," he cried. "I know I was wrong. I'll do anything. Just tell me what you want.""Stop it." I looked down at him. "I can't stand the sight of you."He flinched as though I'd struck him. Tears spilled onto the floor as he tried to find the words to defend himself. "I didn't mean for any of this to happen," he explained. "That day, I was just—"Just what?" I cut in. "You just wanted Yvonne to spend the day with you? You just wanted to wear my groomsman's suit and take pictures together? Or did you just want to watch me make a fool of myself?"His mouth opened, but nothing came out. Panic flashed across his face for the briefest moment. And suddenly, I understood. Maybe Colin hadn't been completely oblivious to what he was doing. Maybe he'd simply gotten used to getting away
