KATHARINA

I’ve been dreaming lately.

Intermittent at first, then frequent.

Not the fragmented old, dusty memories that occasionally surface when eternity grows dull, but something else entirely.

There were of a man.

A man I could swear I’ve never met.

Never known. Not even an idea whether he was human or something else entirely.

Yet from the very beginning, I was certain of one thing—

He was alive.

Living.

Existing somewhere beyond the boundaries of this forest, somewhere in the outside world I had long since abandoned.

His face was always blurred, as were his surroundings. The voices around him were indistinct as well, the details deliberately obscured. As though something unseen barred me from prying too deeply. As though forcing my attention onto him alone.

And only him.

In these dreams, I felt his pain as if it were my own.

The relentless weight of responsibility pressing down on his shoulders. The quiet exhaustion he never allowed to surface. The fleeting moments of confusion he

  • Her Moon, His Haven    Chapter 16

XANDERI had always known I was destined to die young. But never had that truth struck me with such brutal clarity as it did in this very moment.I was only twenty-five.I had thought that even if I couldn’t live as long as Grandma Paulina, I would at least make it into my forties—maybe my fifties. After all, my predecessors had all reached, or come close to, the century mark.My father himself had passed at ninety-nine.So no, I wasn’t ready.Nothing was ready.Jaxon wasn’t prepared to take over. The Pack wasn’t prepared to lose its Alpha. Without proper succession or preparation, Crescent Ridge would plunge into chaos the moment I died. And with that, I would have failed—not just my people, but the ancestors who had sworn, generation after generation, to protect this land.A violent surge of hatred rose within me, sudden and unrestrained—directed at the ancient witch who had cursed my bloodline.Whatever grievance she had held against my ancestor should have ended with him.Why drag

KATHARINAThe moment I swallowed that blood, I knew it was game over. What happened next was no longer within my control. With the last remnants of my consciousness, I watched in helpless horror as my self-control shattered—and I sank my teeth straight into its paw.Everything else dissolved into nothingness. There was only the taste.Sweet as nectar, intoxicating beyond reason. It flooded my mouth, overwhelming my senses, luring me to take more—another sip, another swallow—until the very idea of stopping ceased to exist. It was unlike anything I had ever tasted before. And no—this wasn’t just hunger speaking. This was different.A difference so vast it felt as though I had been feeding on the wrong thing all along.Time lost all meaning. I couldn’t tell whether it was minutes that passed or hours that slipped away as I remained trapped in that delirium, suspended between instinct and oblivion. Then—Bitterness exploded across my tongue.Sharp. Violent. Jarring. It was like walking b

XANDERReturning to the forbidden grounds hadn’t been easy—largely because of Jaxon’s vehement disapproval. He believed it was reckless for me to approach her again without first uncovering who she truly was and confirming whether she might be the mastermind behind everything. And honestly, I couldn’t fault his reasoning. But how were we even supposed to accomplish anything without getting close to her?We had searched the ancient records, and also subtly questioned some of the Elders about any previous sightings in the forbidden grounds.None of it led anywhere. In other words, she truly seemed to have appeared out of thin air.Or at least, before me, no one had ever been aware of her existence.Because of this and other unspoken concerns, Jaxon proposed that he go in my stead—or failing that, send someone else.I rejected the suggestion immediately. This was not something I could treat lightly. Excluding my ability to enter and exit the forbidden grounds unharmed, one thing was cert

KATHARINAHow was that possible?Confusion surged through me as I stared at the pup standing in the rose garden. It had slipped past my reinforced enchantments—again. And just like before, I hadn’t sensed its approach or its entry at all.The first time could have been dismissed as an accident. A stroke of luck. Perhaps even an oversight on my part. But a second time?Calling it a coincidence no longer sufficed.I had lived here for a century, and in all that time, no living creature—animal, human, or supernatural—had ever crossed my boundaries without my knowledge.Yet this pup had done so twice. When I had examined it during our first encounter, its body had revealed nothing unusual. By all accounts, it was an ordinary wild wolf. And I trusted my abilities. I could not possibly have been mistaken. For that reason alone, I had never suspected it was sent by an outsider. Because it was a fact—an unshakable one—that no one could breach my enchantments without alerting me.And yet, that

XANDERThe eerie atmosphere in the dungeon peaked the moment Jack finished speaking. Even the silence that followed felt heavy, pressing down on us like an unseen weight. Then—Jack suddenly shuddered.“Ugh. That was so scary.”Just like that, the oppressive tension shattered. We watched as she rubbed her arms and hurriedly scooted forward, planting herself between Jaxon and me as though seeking protection.I exchanged a look with Jaxon, and before either of us could stop ourselves, we chuckled in unison.“Getting scared by your own story?” I teased. “That’s new.”“As if you two were any better,” she shot back, rolling her eyes. Then she pointed straight at Jaxon. “Don’t think I didn’t notice you edging closer to Xander earlier.”“A werewolf scared by a witch story,” she snorted. “Humans would have a field day laughing at you.”Of course, Jaxon refused to admit it. “You saw it wrong. I was just trying to listen more carefully.”“Oh, absolutely,” Jack said, her lips curling into a smug
