In the dispensary, he was walking around with his hands tucked into the pockets of his pants. In front of him, there were posters depicting first aid on the walls. As I sat behind the desk, watching him and listening to him, I was utterly lost as to what to say to him, not understanding what could be said.
He was Daniel Bruno. One of the richest men in the world. His business was spread all over the world. If any employee or management man of this big amusement park had not seen him yet, how could I recognize him? But was I upset by it? Yes, maybe. I admit it in my heart.
I had hidden information about his daughter from him knowing that he was extremely rude and unbearable in the park at that time. I left him alone and took Eva in the car to the dispensary to teach him a lesson. He had walked such a long way and his mind felt a bit winded, but only then did I know that he was my boss.
"Oh God, please don't fire me from the job." As I thought about that, I got faced with another problem.
'This amusement park earns millions of dollars per week, so I'll have to see for myself how this park handles the emergency situation and how they treat the guests who came to picnic. Why? Miss Jane, what do you think?” His voice drew me out of my thoughts.
"Yes! You should see." I said for the first time in a soft voice. Earlier in the park I had been talking to him harshly.
He was lecturing me on how to treat guests and I bowed my head. I was just waiting to hear a cold sentence but as he spoke he walked towards the cabin and opened the door.
"Eva! Are you okay? I'm waiting for you to ride on the dragon ride."
The door opened and Eva came out with her head bowed. He smiled looking at me. He moved forward and raised Eva's face with his index finger.
"Hello little girl! You make me worry. How are you doing now?"
"Yes daddy! I'm sorry daddy I'm so dumb I shouldn't have done that but here it is." She was sorry.
"It's OK. There is no need to explain. Miss Jane has told me everything. Now quickly thank her and leave here."
Eva raised her head and saw her daddy. It seemed that she would have hugged her father, but there was nothing like that. The chair was moving, but I sat still. She came to me and hugged me.
"Thank you! You are very exemplary, very good, just like a fairy. If you didn't come to help me today, I don't know what I would do. You are superb."
"Thank you Eva." I caressed her red cheeks lovingly. "I'm glad I could help you. Is your pain gone now?"
"No, now there is less pain than before."
"Good! But you must apply the ointment at night and if the swelling does not reduce by the morning, tell your father to check with the doctor." When I explained to her, she shook her head vigorously.
"Mr. Bruno! On your way home, you must take Eva to a pharmacy for analgesics." I let go of Eva's hand while standing.
"Good advice Miss Jane! Which brand will be better?"
I picked up the paper lying on the desk and wrote the name of the ointment on it, and handed it to the angry boss. Instead of holding the paper, he grabbed my wrist. I was stunned by his touch.
"I will be in touch.”
In a low voice, he leaned forward and whispered in my ears. I was trembling as if smoke was coming out of my ears. I did not understand what had happened in those moments.
Increasing pressure on my wrist with his thumb, he suddenly pulled the paper out of my hand and freed my wrist.
"Let's go, Eva." He took his daughter's hand in a normal manner and left. I was standing still.
What was he planning for me? Was he planning any punishment for my disobedience?
How could I make such a big blender? But what was my fault? I had worked here for a year, till today no worker had seen him, he himself had never come forward. Instead, his managers and secretaries used to handle all the work. He has a huge business empire which includes water ships, big malls, computer firms and many other things besides this amusement park. The first time I saw Mr. Bruno, he was very irritable and ill-tempered. That's why I behaved with him in a rude manner. I felt happy by increasing his anxiety, but now will he take revenge on me and expel me from this job?
I was worried, the duty hours were ending. I told the nurse and she came out.
Now I was walking back to the office, from where I had to pick up my wallet, house key and go to the flat.
As a hardworking girl who loved doing her work with honesty and integrity, this job provided me with excellent salary and benefits. I got that after a lot of dedication and work which I did not want to lose but….
It is very likely I will lose my job because tonight I behaved rudely with a guest, and that guest turned out to be the boss of my company.
~At Night
It was cold as ice. The night was getting darker.
When I reached home around nine o'clock at night, I threw off my sandals by the door and hung my coat on the back of the chair. I turned to the kitchen, opening the refrigerator's door. I was very hungry and today was so busy that I was unable to go to the grocery store. There was nothing in the fridge except eggs, so I had to spend today on omelets.
As I frantically grabbed two eggs from the fridge, I placed them near the sink and went to my bedroom.
After changing uniforms, I was heading towards the kitchen when the landline phone of the flat started ringing.
Also, a phone was provided to this apartment by the company.
My attention was drawn to the phone, and I stopped.
It must be a call from Bruno's secretary not to come to work tomorrow, I thought to myself.
"Hello..." I nervously picked up the phone and put it to my ear.
"Hello." My two-year-old younger sister's chirping voice came out of the receiver.
"Noor." Hearing her voice, my nerves were relaxed.
"How are you? Sister?"
"I am fine ....."
"Listen." Noor interrupted me.
"I really need some money. Next week I have to attend a party. For that, I'll need an expensive dress." She explained the reason for this call. She never calls me if she does not want anything.
"Noor, I sent you spending money last week. What happened?"
"For God's sake, don't waste your three or four hundred dollars on me. I've moved to a completely different city. The money was spent on moving."
"New city, start college and you didn't even consult me?"
"You're not my mother! I want a dress. Just send me one thousand dollars by the day after tomorrow." Noor hung up the phone without listening after speaking in off mode.
I wanted to tell her that I might not have this job tomorrow and would have to vacate the house too.
As usual, Noor did not listen to me.
We both were sisters. I was older and Noor was two years younger than me.
I always thought Noor was more beautiful and attractive than me. This is due to the fact that she is slightly younger. My mother and father used to pamper Noor more.
I was studying business marketing when my mother and father were badly injured and disabled in a car accident. During those days, I had to take care of the house, Noor, my mother and father all by myself. All the savings of mummy and papa were beginning to be spent on treatment; it was time to sell the house.
I can’t continue my studies. Noor started to dislike the smell of medicine in the house. That's why she left everything and shifted to a hostel, increasing her expenses.
A few months later, both mom and dad had passed away. The relatives had already moved away, so no one wanted to take responsibility for the two young girls.
Since then I have done various jobs. After graduating from a private school, I was able to get a good job here which I could not afford to lose.
After placing the phone back on the cradle, I gave up on dinner plans. In this situation, I can’t eat anything. I was about to turn away when the phone rang again.
"Hello." I picked up the phone.
"Miss Jane." A heavy voice echoed. How could I forget this voice?
"Yes, Mr. Bruno! Is Eva okay?" I barely regained my senses.
"I am calling for another reason. I hope you will be free at this time?"
How could he be so ruthless as to call me at night and fire me from my job? Couldn't he have waited for the morning?
"Miss Jane. Are you here?" In silence, he asked in a loud voice.
It took me a moment to come out of my thoughts to say, "Yes, yes.".
"Tomorrow at one o'clock in the afternoon meet me in the office. Good night." He hung up the phone without hearing my answer. A moment later, I slammed the receiver on the cradle and made my way into the room.
After switching off the lights, I switched on the night light to sleep but both my heart and mind were occupied with the problem of finding another job.
How could I sleep peacefully?
Will he fire me tomorrow?
From where will I send the thousand dollars to Noor?
Will I have to rob a bank to survive until I find another job?
I was trying to sleep by changing my crotch, but both my heart and mind were busy with the problem of finding another job. I got tired, took out the pillow from under my head, put it on my face and tried to fall asleep.
I tried to remember the pleasant moments of my life and soon I had fallen asleep. In my sleep, I was tormented by insomnia. In the city streets, I saw myself looking for work.
“You are fired..." The voice made me restless in my dreams too.
Whatever it was, this night was one of my most miserable nights.
“Tasha, open your eyes.” The lights above flickered as the hum of machines filled the room. Daniel sat at her side, his hand gripping hers with a desperation that made his fingers ache. Tasha’s once-vibrant face was now pale, her breath shallow, a thin sheen of sweat clinging to her forehead. The blood that had poured from the wound in her side had soaked through the hospital sheets, staining them a dark red. Her body was fragile, lifeless, and as still as the silence in the room. His heart was breaking in ways he never thought possible, each beat a painful reminder that the woman he loved was slipping away from him, and he could do nothing to stop it. His eyes were swollen from tears, his face streaked with them. His grip tightened around her hand, as if he could hold on to the last fragments of her life with sheer will alone. But even as he held her, even as he whispered her name over and over, it felt like the world was slowly fading to black."Tasha, please… please, wake up. I’m
The opening of the mall had arrived, and excitement filled the air. Daniel, standing near a jewelry stall, was busy directing his workers, making sure everything was perfect for the big day. The mall was filled with people, buzzing with energy, and yet, Daniel's mind seemed distracted.A flicker of movement caught his eye in the mirror before him. A boy stood behind a pillar, but Daniel thought nothing of it at first. After all, it was such a crowded day, and people were everywhere. But when Tasha entered the makeup shop a little later, Daniel's mind was drawn back to the strange sensation that someone was watching her. She was absorbed in picking out lipstick shades, inspecting them carefully in the mirror, when suddenly, her heart skipped a beat. In the reflection, she saw the boy from earlier – Carl – standing just behind her.She spun around quickly, her breath caught in her throat, but no one was there. It must have been a trick of the light, she thought, dismissing the unease cr
For the grand opening of the mall, Daniel had decided not to invite any actors, actresses, or high-profile political figures as special guests. Instead, he wanted the moment to be about one person—his wife.Tasha’s car pulled up outside the mall, and without hesitation, Daniel stepped forward to open the door for her, right in front of the waiting media. His smile was warm and inviting as he extended his hand to her."Come on," he said, his voice full of affection. Tasha, her heart racing, placed her hand in his, stepping out of the car gently. She was standing in front of the media for the very first time, and it made her feel a bit anxious. But before she could get too nervous, Daniel wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her closer to him. The simple act of his touch helped to calm her nerves, making her feel more at ease."Here, take the scissors," he said, holding them out to her. Tasha, still in a bit of a daze, had assumed he was joking, but seeing the serious expression o
That evening, after a long and grueling day, Tasha returned home to find Daniel waiting for her in the living room. The apartment was dimly lit, the soft golden hue of the table lamps casting a warm glow. The aroma of fresh coffee lingered in the air. She closed the door behind her with a tired sigh, and there he was—Daniel—lounging on the couch with an easy, mischievous smile on his face.“How was your first day as boss?” he asked, setting his laptop aside with a deliberate slowness, as if he were savoring the moment of her arrival.“Exhausting,” Tasha admitted, kicking off her heels with a grateful grunt and collapsing beside him on the couch. Her shoulders were tense, her muscles aching from a day filled with meetings, decisions, and memories she had been trying to bury for years.Daniel’s arm was around her in an instant, pulling her closer to him. His touch was grounding, like a lifeline. “And yet, you survived. That’s my girl,” he said, his voice full of pride. She smiled weakly
They had been working together for a week, but it seemed unlikely that this girl had even seen him once. He was lying beside his new bride, lost in thought, remembering Tasha. The image of her beautiful yet simple face, full of confidence, kept playing in his mind. A wave of deep regret swept over him. He wished he had appreciated her more, that he had valued her in the way she deserved. Maybe, if he had, she would still be with him now.Tears welled up in his eyes, and he quickly sat up, rubbing his eyes roughly, trying to push the painful thoughts away. His heart was breaking. The girl he had once known, the girl he had lost, was now married to someone else. She was no longer his, and it was all because of his own foolishness and insecurities."How's everything going?" She asked softly, her voice gentle as she styled her hair. She leaned her chin on his shoulder, wrapping her delicate arms around him, showing concern. He could feel her care for him, yet his thoughts were elsewhere.
Shehryar paced back and forth in his office, his brow furrowed with frustration. The weight of the company’s recent losses pressed heavily on him, and his temper simmered. His brother, Carl, sat across from him, visibly worn from the arguments they’d been having for weeks.“Has our time come?” Shehryar snapped, slamming his fist onto the desk. “Now we’ll work like employees in our own office under a girl?”Carl adjusted his glasses and sighed deeply, his patience thinning. “We’re not employees, Shehryar. We’re still partners.”“Partners?” Shehryar barked, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Don’t joke with me, Carl. She owns 70 percent of the shares, and we only have 30 between us. That means she calls the shots in everything from now on!” He slammed the back of his chair in frustration, his anger palpable.Carl leaned forward, rubbing his temples. “Instead of yelling, maybe we should hope she’s competent enough to save what’s left of this sinking ship. We’ve got nothing left but this c
