Chapter 5

Penulis: Spicy Duck
Alistair lay sprawled in the middle of the stage in the Celestial Room, surrounded by empty liquor bottles. His once-clean white shirt was soaked through with alcohol, the thin fabric clinging to his narrow, bony frame. He had already been forced to drink no less than ten bottles.

"Drink. Why'd you stop? What are you getting all worked up for?"

"You're the worst kind of social climber—vicious and underhanded. You hurt Mrs. Winslow seven years ago, and seven years later you're shamelessly throwing yourself at Geri so you can be her side piece."

"Were you trying to tempt Geri into cheating? How can you be this shameless?"

Moments earlier, Geri had called over a bunch of their old classmates. Then, she'd made Alistair stand on stage, publicly admit that he had tried to seduce her, and apologize to Jonah 100 times.

But even that had not satisfied Jonah. He had only been willing to let it go if Alistair finished 100 bottles of hard liquor.

Alistair had knelt on the floor and prostrated himself, begging for mercy. "Mr. Graham, I'm sorry for overstepping and being shameless. I'm a jerk and a piece of trash. This is all my fault, but please, find another way to get back at me. I can't drink. I really can't."

He had stomach cancer and absolutely couldn't touch alcohol. Even though he was already dying, he still hadn't seen Corey or handed over the 30,000 dollars he'd painstakingly saved over the years.

He couldn't die here.

Jonah had kicked him away in disgust, and Geri, while pretending to restrain Jonah, shot a look at the old classmates who were watching the show.

A moment later, they'd dragged Alistair onto the stage.

The liquor burned its way through Alistair's stomach. He drank and vomited, over and over, his entire body twitching as he lay in a pool of booze, completely wrecked.

When they realized that something was wrong, the crowd didn't dare to force any more alcohol on him. Instead, they turned to study Geri's expression.

Geri stared at Alistair's flushed face and body. Her heart sank. When had someone as tall as Alistair gotten this thin?

Her brows creased the slightest bit. But when she turned to Jonah, she wore the same gentle smile as always. "Joe, have you cooled off yet?"

Jonah asked, "Geri, do you feel sorry for him?"

Geri instantly frowned, and whatever flicker of pity she'd felt for Alistair vanished. "How could I?"

Pity her enemy?

A cruel light flashed in Jonah's eyes. "I don't buy it. Not unless… you tear up the photo in that locket he wears around his neck."

The moment the words were out of his mouth, Alistair sobered up. He clutched the locket hanging against his chest in a death grip, his eyes wide and wild like a terrified animal.

"Geri, don't do this. Please, I'm begging you…"

When Jonah first made his demand, Geri had actually hesitated. But then she thought of Margaret, still lying in a hospital bed, and her hatred surged up and swallowed her whole.

She stood and slowly walked toward Alistair.

He shrank back into a corner, having nowhere left to run. The pain in his stomach spread to all four limbs, robbing him of the strength to fight back. He could only watch as Geri pried open his swollen fingers, one by one, and ripped the locket from his hand.

"Geri, you've already burned every picture of my parents and wiped out every last trace of their existence. Now, you want to destroy the only thing I have left?" Alistair reached for her, nearly screaming.

After the incident, Geri had stormed into the York residence and destroyed every photo and memento of Alistair's parents. Back then, Corey had only been six years old. He'd curled up in Alistair's arms and sobbed.

No matter how Alistair had begged and insisted on his innocence, Geri hadn't softened in the slightest.

"How can you be this cruel, Geri?"

A sudden fury flared in Geri's chest. She ripped the photo to shreds right in front of Alistair and scattered the pieces over his head. Then, she wrapped her hands around his throat.

"I'm cruel? And what you did to my mother wasn't cruel? I destroyed objects, but you hurt a living, breathing person!"

The photo was torn so abruptly that Alistair didn't even bother trying to fight her off. It wasn't like putting up a fight ever made her go easy on him anyway.

Jonah was the man she loved the most, and Alistair had hurt him. If she didn't destroy the things Alistair cherished, how was she supposed to get back at him on Jonah's behalf?

Alistair's eyes went flat and hollow. Just as Geri and the others turned to leave, he suddenly rasped, "Geri Winslow, I hate you."

Geri stopped at the doorway and walked back to him. She crouched and leaned toward his right ear. "Funny. I hate you, too."

When she noticed how red his right ear had gotten from being so sensitive, she shifted to his left ear instead. "But here's the thing—something I hate more than you. I still love you."

After saying that, her eyes were full of tangled emotion. Love and hate were wound so tightly together that it was impossible to pry them apart.

Alistair just stared at her, his expression dazed.

Geri then left. What she didn't know was that Alistair was completely deaf in his left ear. He hadn't heard that last sentence at all.

A low-key luxury car worth millions of dollars pulled into the slums. The rundown apartment building where Alistair and Stella had lived for the past three years had rusted pipes, broken bricks, and cheap plastic flowers taped here and there for decoration. Flimsy but twinkling fairy lights were strung on the balcony, and childish, brightly colored cutout shapes were plastered on the yellowed windows.Stella had put all of that up by herself after she learned that Alistair was coming back. Her face was still bruised from the day Geri had hit her, but her smile was gentle. It was completely at odds with the dark, empty eye socket and the twisted scar that cut across her features. She cooked a feast of all Alistair's favorite dishes and now stood there rubbing her hands together, waiting nervously for him to arrive. When she saw him get out of the luxury car, she hurried to him in delight, looking him over from head to toe. "Ali, did she hurt you at all?"He smiled and shook his hea

Every day, Geri forced Alistair to take his medicine, get injections, go through chemotherapy, and take nutritional supplements.Whenever he refused to cooperate, she would use Stella to threaten him. This tactic filled Geri with jealousy and heartache, but it worked every single time.Under Geri's meticulous care, Alistair's complexion visibly improved day by day. He even put on some weight. She was delighted to see him seemingly getting better. She thought she would be able to save him. But when she took him to the hospital for another checkup, the test results shattered all her hopes in an instant. The report indicated that there had been no actual improvement in Alistair's condition. The expensive targeted drugs and special medications hadn't been able to stop the spread of the cancer cells at all. Alistair's life hadn't been extended, not even for a moment. He had less than a month left.Geri held the report in her hands. Around her, all the doctors and nurses stood with the

The sun shone bright over the secluded garden in Geri's private residence. Alistair sat under the shade of a large patio umbrella in a loose, comfortable set of loungewear, a book in his hands.Geri stared at his thin yet handsome profile, completely entranced. A long while passed before she finally headed toward him with his medicine. She took the book from his hands and said, "Ali, it's time for your medicine."Annoyed at having his train of thought interrupted, he turned away, clearly disgusted. It had been a full month since Geri had knocked Alistair out and brought him to this private residence. Every day, medical staff went in and out of the place. Alistair underwent chemotherapy, took targeted drugs and his prescribed medication, and endured acupuncture…His hair, already dry and brittle to begin with, had all fallen out. Now, he could only wear a fisherman's hat to cover his bare, bald head.Geri's patience didn't waver in the face of Alistair's resistance. She said, "Ali

One sentence from Alistair was enough to make all of Geri's emotions surge at once. She threw her arms around him and held him tight."No! Ali, if she's your wife, then what am I? We agreed back then that we'd get married once we graduated from college. That promise is ten years late, but I'm here to take you home now. From now on, you don't have to stay with this trash and suffer anymore!" she cried.Alistair gently pushed her away and walked over to the blind woman. He carefully helped her up, his voice low and full of concern as he asked her if she was okay. Then, he turned to Geri and said, "There's no need for you to worry, Ms. Winslow. I don't feel like I'm suffering with my wife. I'm actually truly grateful you abandoned me here back then. Otherwise, I never would've met someone as wonderful as her. Also, she's not trash. She has a name. It's Stella Lakeworth. I'm the one who named her."Geri felt as if her heart were being sliced open. For a moment, she couldn't tell whethe

There was no rebirth, no second chance. George had been dead for ten years, and Corey was dead, too. As for Alistair… Geri didn't even know where he was buried. She hadn't changed anything. She was just a pitiful soul who had been dragged back from the brink of death after trying to end her life. After what happened, Stuart no longer dared to lock Geri up. She went to the slums and stood at the very intersection where she had abandoned Alistair back then. She sent people to search for him, but no matter how long they searched, they couldn't find a single trace of him.The slums were just as filthy and rundown as ever, little changed from before. But the beggars and drifters crowding the streets were a completely different group of people. She couldn't even find the blind beggar from back then.It was as if Alistair had vanished into thin air. She was back to a time when Alistair, Corey, and George were all still alive.Everything could still be changed!Geri didn't hesitate for even a second and headed straight for the equipment room. When she arrived, a few boys were in the middle of throwing volleyballs at Alistair.Ball after ball slammed into his legs and stomach. He could only curl up in the corner and hug his head to protect himself. He waited for an opening, then suddenly grabbed a volleyball and hurled it straight at the ringleader's face. The boy took the hit square on the nose. His rage flared as he stormed toward Alistair."Son of a bitch. You've got some nerve hitting me, you punk!" Still cursing, he lifted his cleat and started to bring his foot down on Alistair's arm.Alistair was outnumbered, and he had nowhere to run. He was in real danger.Just then, someone kicked the boy aside—not hard
