Chapter 1

Everything rewound to three years ago.At a private club in Jansburke, a man was scrubbing the toilet with effort. He was about six feet tall, but the oversized uniform made his frame look even thinner and more haggard than he already was. When he finally finished, he slumped to the floor, exhausted, and pulled out a photo. In the picture were his father, his younger brother, and himself."Alistair, someone puked in the Celestial Room. Go take care of it."Alistair York had been out of prison for three months. The first thing he wanted to do was pick up his younger brother, Corey York, from the orphanage. But as an ex-convict, he had to prove that he had a stable job before he was allowed to take Corey away.Finding work had not been easy for him—a man with only a high school diploma and a criminal record was labeled dangerous anywhere he went. No one wanted to hire him, not even as a waiter.Fortunately, the club was a place where all kinds of people came together. They didn't c

Chapter 2

Geri's voice sounded like a hiss from hell, sending a chill through Alistair's body. He wanted to run.The next second, that ice-cold voice rang out right by his ear. "Are you deaf? Can't you hear me talking to you?"Her breath was hot against his skin, like the whisper of a demon wrapping around him.Alistair's heart clenched in pain. The accident in prison that had blown out his left eardrum… It really had been her doing.Noticing the tremor that ran through him, Geri's voice turned almost syrupy. "What are you shaking for? You see an old classmate, and you don't even say hello? I'm the one who got you this job. Aren't you going to thank me?"What?Alistair's lips parted as a wave of panic crashed over him. He'd thought that if he kept his head down, worked hard to reduce his sentence and earn an early release, then found a job at some no-name club and lived as quietly as possible, he could slip right past Geri's radar. In the end, the moment he stepped past the prison gates,

Chapter 3

Indeed, Alistair was dying. He had been diagnosed with late-stage stomach cancer back in prison. He had less than half a year left. The reason he had worked so hard to get proof that he was gainfully employed wasn't really to get Corey out of the orphanage—it was so he could just see Corey one last time. Also, he wanted to earn as much money as possible for Corey before he died. When Alistair returned to the club, he accepted every filthy, exhausting job the manager tossed his way. He took it all without complaint. It was as if he didn't know what it meant to be tired. When it was time to eat, he never fought over food. When the pain in his stomach became unbearable, he just swallowed a cheap painkiller. When people made things difficult for him, he only lowered his head and silently endured their complaints.Even the manager started feeling guilty about piling it on him.So, when Alistair once again asked the manager to issue him a letter proving that he was a proper employee, t

The plea shattered Alistair's pride.Geri's eyes widened. All these years, no matter how she had tried to break him, Alistair had never once bowed his head. Even when she had ground him into the dirt, his eyes had still burned with defiance, and his spine had stayed straight.Back in that hellish senior year of high school, when a group of boys had "accidentally" stomped on his arm and broken it, Alistair hadn't shed a single tear. When he had scored in the top 50 nationwide on the SAT and applied to various prestigious colleges, only for her to tear the applications to shreds, he'd only clenched his fists. When she had ruined his respectable jobs, forcing him to beg and busk on the streets, he still hadn't begged for mercy. Even when she had sent him to prison, all he had said was, "Let Corey go. I'll atone for everything."But now, Alistair was kneeling at Geri's feet, his bony hands fawningly clutching at her pants. His posture wasn't just humble—it was downright degrading.Ger

Chapter 5

Alistair lay sprawled in the middle of the stage in the Celestial Room, surrounded by empty liquor bottles. His once-clean white shirt was soaked through with alcohol, the thin fabric clinging to his narrow, bony frame. He had already been forced to drink no less than ten bottles."Drink. Why'd you stop? What are you getting all worked up for?""You're the worst kind of social climber—vicious and underhanded. You hurt Mrs. Winslow seven years ago, and seven years later you're shamelessly throwing yourself at Geri so you can be her side piece.""Were you trying to tempt Geri into cheating? How can you be this shameless?"Moments earlier, Geri had called over a bunch of their old classmates. Then, she'd made Alistair stand on stage, publicly admit that he had tried to seduce her, and apologize to Jonah 100 times. But even that had not satisfied Jonah. He had only been willing to let it go if Alistair finished 100 bottles of hard liquor.Alistair had knelt on the floor and prostrate

Chapter 6

After coaxing Jonah back into a good mood, Geri, on a strange impulse, signed a letter verifying Alistair's employment and returned to the Celestial Room. She had no idea why, but when she thought of the dead look in Alistair's eyes, a wave of panic rose in her chest. When she pushed open the door, she found a skinny, bony figure kneeling on the floor, his hands trembling as he picked up the glass shards scattered all over.Geri's sharp eyes caught sight of several crumpled tissues stained with blood in the trash can nearby. She snorted, thinking that it was such a pathetic trick.Alistair finally finished gathering the shards. He swayed as he stood, then turned and saw Geri standing there. He hurriedly wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth.Geri's tone dripped with mockery. "Did you go to all that trouble to get so much fake blood so you could milk it in front of some random woman? Or is it that when it comes to men, you won't turn any of them down, either?"Alistair froze

Chapter 7

The bodyguard slammed Alistair hard onto the ground. Geri spat, "You never learn, do you?"Alistair curled up on the ground, unable to recover for a long time.A flicker of surprise flashed through Geri's eyes. She wondered why he looked like he was in so much pain. She'd clearly instructed the bodyguard not to use much force.Just as she was about to step forward, Jonah said, "Geri, he must've wanted to hurt me because he's jealous that I'm your boyfriend. What if he ends up smashing me into a coma, too?"Darkness clouded Geri's face. The hand she had been about to extend to help Alistair up froze midair. A moment later, she withdrew it and signaled for a bodyguard to haul him to his feet."Quit playing dead and apologize to Jonah!" she snapped.Alistair just looked at her numbly. "Geri, you hate me, right?"His voice was very soft, almost weightless. "Then just kill me."Corey was gone. Alistair didn't think there was a point in living anymore. For an instant, the whole world

Things fast-forwarded to three years later, with Geri visiting Margaret in the VIP ward at Jansburke Hospital. The room had been buzzing a moment ago, but the moment Margaret said that no one pushed her, it was so silent that one could hear a pin drop. The visitors who'd been chattering nonstop now shut their mouths.Geri was silent for a long time before suddenly letting out a sharp, disbelieving laugh. "Mom, you must be confused after being in a coma for so long. The security footage clearly showed Alistair pushing you. Are you saying cameras can lie?"The second she said that, her heart skipped a beat. It wasn't impossible that the footage had been faked.Right on cue, Geri's assistant, Bernice Johnson, pulled up the surveillance footage from ten years ago on her phone and held it out for Margaret to watch. On the screen, it clearly showed Alistair talking to Margaret, then reaching out and pushing her.Geri pointed at the phone. "Mom, look. In the video, Alistair is visibly m

Chapter 9

Stuart spoke with biting, vicious contempt. "Alistair York is just an ordinary man from an ordinary family, and he dared to dream of clinging to the daughter I so painstakingly raised?"Geri, you're my only daughter and the Winslow family's sole heiress. Ever since you were a child, I taught you never to have a weakness. When you like someone or something, you keep it hidden deep in your heart."But not only did you fail to hide it, you even risked your own life to save some doctor's son. After everything your mother and I poured into you, that's how you repay us?"His voice rose with every single word, and Geri's heart sank.Stuart continued, "If you hadn't treated that punk like he was more important than your own life, I never would've laid a hand on him in the first place. At the end of the day, you're the one who ruined him."Geri's legs felt weak, and her eyes filled with hatred for Stuart.Of course. How could she have forgotten? Her father was a shrewd, calculating busine

Chapter 10

In all her 30 years of living, Geri experienced true despair.Bernice said, "After Alistair was sent to prison, Mr. Winslow arranged some… special treatment for him in your name. Every day in prison, he was harassed and beaten."Getting attacked was the lighter punishments. The worst was when Mr. Winslow staged a prison labor accident. That cost Alistair his hearing in his left ear."No wonder. Geri finally understood why Alistair had always struggled to hear her after he got out of prison. Back then, she'd only found it annoying. Now, her heart ached with a dense, suffocating pain. She stopped refusing food. As she devoured the meal Bernice had brought, she asked between bites, "Did you find anything about Alistair's current situation? Where is he? Is he okay?"In the past three years, without her revenge hanging over his head, with his tenacity, he should've been able to give himself and Corey a decent life.Bernice silently handed Geri the medical report from the prison's rout
