CHAPTER 4: CAUGHT IN A FIX.

KAYLAN'S POV.

At 05:04, I heard a knock on the door to my ward, and then it slid open. A doctor was accompanied in by two nurses.

"You're awake," the doctor said as he walked in. So I sat up.

"Whoa! Easy now. You had some minor fractures. You shouldn't be moving right now, or you could dislocate your bones," the doctor rushed over to support me. But I pushed away his hand dismissively.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

"I'm fine, doctor. And I need to leave," I replied, sitting up anyway.

The doctor and one other nurse looked stunned.

"I don't understand. How are you okay? Because firstly, you're not supposed to be alive from the wreckage I saw. But the injuries you had didn't match the level of blood you had on you and at the scene. You're supposed to be bedridden for a couple of days at least, so how are you okay?"

The doctor aired his perplexity.

"But you're not a werewolf. Our scan would have picked that frequency the moment you passed through the front door. There's no way we would have attended to you. Our hospital policy forbids it," he further said.

I was amazed, but I didn't express it.

'So they are unable to detect a Lycan,' I said within me.

Humans and werewolves hardly got along as the werewolves considered themselves superior. And they were indeed superior in many obvious ways. They were at each other's throats most of the time.

But there were rules in the society that kept an all-out war from breaking out, as it mostly did in the past.

"Are you sure the blood stains on your dress were yours?" the nurse asked.

"I don't know. I can't remember. My memory is a bit hazy," I replied.

"Of course," the doctor smiled mildly. "Get some more rest. I'm just glad you're okay."

"I hope the cops get the perp who caused this. But it'll be hard to do so since he wore a hoodie while he fled the scene, and it gets more complicated as the truck isn't registered to any entity," the nurse added.

"That wasn't a necessary piece of information you needed to share," the doctor said through gritted teeth.

"What? It feels targeted. And besides, the cops are going to ask her by the time they get here, anyway," the nurse shrugged, rolling her eyes.

She was absolutely right. I hadn't even thought about it. This was definitely the doing of Regina.

She didn't just want me to lose everything. She wanted to take my life as well.

I gritted my teeth and clenched my fists as I got infuriated.

"We could have called your family, but there was no number saved in your emergency contacts. I'd suggest you call your family and let them know what's going on," the doctor said.

Oh, if he only knew.

I just sat in silence.

"We'll check on you shortly after, and administer your meds, and run a couple more tests and scans to be sure you're in perfect health. We wouldn't want to keep you here beyond necessary," the doctor said.

This time, I nodded in acknowledgment. Then they walked out.

All the while, I took note of the second nurse. She was awfully quiet, and even typed something on her phone at some point.

I didn't take that observation for granted. If there was one thing I'd learned from the attack, it was that there was no length Regina wouldn't go to.

Even after the banishment, I still wasn't safe.

I knew I couldn't stay at the hospital any longer.

It was only logical for me to check for my belongings in the drawer beside me, so I did. My phone and purse were there. The screen of my phone was cracked, but manageable.

My debit cards and the few thousand bucks I had were still intact.

I walked up to the door and slid it open partially. I stuck my head out to observe. I saw that the coast was clear — neither the doctor nor the nurses roamed the corridor.

So, I walked out of the ward, heading to the end of the corridor. The suspicious nurse suddenly emerged from a room. I froze for a second. Then almost instantly, I dashed into the room beside me. I hid beside the door, panting heavily.

In the room, I saw that a patient was asleep. He was wearing a neck brace, and a splint on the arm and leg.

That would have been me, or worse.

I saw a milk-colored coat on a chair. It probably belonged to a visitor. Without thinking twice, I took off the hospital robe and wore the coat.

"I'm sorry," I muttered to the sleeping patient, feeling bad about taking what wasn't mine without permission. But I needed a disguise. I needed to leave unnoticed.

I peeked through the door as I opened it slightly. The nurse wasn't lurking in the corridor, so I quickly walked out, hastening my steps as I walked away. I took a left turn and headed straight to the stairs. I couldn't risk running into any of them, especially not the suspicious-looking nurse.

I got to the ground floor and sighted the doctor at the reception area. He was talking to someone. I quickly bent my head and continued to the door. It was just a few feet away.

I didn't know if it was just me, but the hospital seemed way bigger than I thought it was. Or maybe it was just my anxiety that made it seem so.

"Hey!" A voice called sternly. I froze immediately. I could feel my heart almost beating out of my chest. I was in a bit of a pickle.

I heard a footstep approaching me. It got closer and closer. Just as I was about to take to my heels, the person walked past me and cheerfully hugged someone who had just walked through the front door.

I let out a sigh of relief, then I scampered out.

Just as I walked out the door, a car parked behind me and two familiar faces exited the car and headed into the hospital. Those were Regina's men.

'So she really was Regina's informant,' I said to myself as I walked away.

I saw a department store up ahead, so I rushed in. I needed to get proper clothes. That way, I'd be able to disguise myself better.

I quickly picked whatever I could. Mostly casual clothes that allowed for easy movement and mobility. It cost me just a few hundred bucks. Even though I knew it was a ripoff, it didn't matter to me.

My family may have cut me off, but that didn't mean I was broke. I had my stash of cash in an account unlinked to the Wulf family account.

I wanted to ask the guard at the store to point me to a hotel, but I stopped. I couldn't trust anyone. Seeing that the vehicle the men came with had gone, I walked out and looked around for a hotel.

I discarded the coat and wore an oversized long-sleeve shirt and baggy pants. Then I concealed my face with a cap.

I had to withdraw some cash from the ATM.

I finally found a hotel and paid for a room, but that was after I withdrew some money from an ATM I passed.

As I got into the room on the seventh floor, I quickly checked through the window to see if I was followed. Nothing down there suggested that I was.

Finally, I sighed in relief. I could rest easy for a bit.

"I can't spend one more night in this city. I'll leave tonight," I said. "But before that, I need a shower."

I walked into the bathroom and stripped. I looked at myself in the mirror for a bit. I found a pair of scissors on the vanity. I picked them up and held a bunch of my hair. After a bit of hesitation, I cut my hair.

Making the first cut was the hardest part, but after that, I went ahead and cut my hair and gave myself a new look.

When I was done taking a shower, I got something to eat.

_______________

The blaring sound of the horn of a car startled me awake. But it was far away, yet I could hear it as though it was a few feet away.

I was hit with a bit of dizziness for a bit, but gained coordination soon after. I saw that it was 21:24 pm from the clock on the bedside table.

It was time to leave.

The receptionist was amazed and looked suspiciously at me as I was checking out already, and at that time of night.

It was going to be safer leaving by train, so I headed to the subway.

As I waited for the train to arrive, I smelled something unusual.

"Werewolf blood."

As I turned around, I saw a young man limping as he tried to run. He seemed terrified. I wondered what was going on.

Shortly after, I saw three men going after him. I could smell them meters away and knew they were werewolves, but not of the Silver Fang Pack.

'This is not my problem,' I said to myself. No one made an attempt to help either. Moreover, they were humans. None would meddle in such matters.

Just then, the train arrived. That was my cue. Folks began rushing in. I was about to, but something just wouldn't let me.

It wasn't the system.

I stood by the open door, embroiled in turmoil. I was afraid of making the decision I felt compelled to make.

'I'm trying to survive. I don't even know how to control what I've become. They'd kill me if I tried. My safety should come first.'

The battle within me was fierce.

As I opened my eyes, I met the disdainful glare of Lady Regina — my stepmother. "You keep lazing around, calling it training, and especially on a day such as this? When will you ever be useful around here?" Regina sneered. "You're very much aware that we have delegates coming from the capital. We need all hands on deck, and you're no exception."'Right.
