~ Finn’s pov~

The house was quiet when I settled into the leather chair, exhaustion tugging at me after patrol. I stretched, rolled my shoulders, then dialed the number I knew by heart.

The line buzzed, and then his voice came through low, sharp, the kind that could slice through silence.

“Tell me you’ve got news, Finn.”

“Relax,” I drawled, leaning back in my chair. “Always so eager. You miss me that much?”

He gave a dry snort. “Miss you? I’m debating which part of you to kill first when I get back.”

I laughed. “Damn. You sound older every time we talk. You’re going to be gray before you hit thirty.”

“Careful,” he warned, but there was amusement under the sharpness. “I still remember how to break your ribs.”

“That was once,” I shot back. “And you cheated.”

He didn’t deny it, and that silence made me grin wider. Some things never changed.

I grinned. “Love you too.”

That earned a pause, and then a low chuckle, the kind no one else ever heard from him.

We went on like that, throwing barbs, until I finally asked, “So? How’s the grand Selection? Any luck? Or should I prepare the pack for you returning mate-less and bitter?”

A curse hissed down the line. “Don’t start.”

I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. “You mean to tell me the mighty Alpha didn’t find his destined Luna in a sea of she wolves?”

“You’re dead when I get back.”

“Empty threats.”

“I swear on my wolf, Finn. When I set foot in that pack house, you’re the first corpse I’m making.”

He exhaled slowly, almost a growl. “Weeks wasted. My wolf isn’t stirred by any of them. I can’t even pretend.”

I quieted. He rarely spoke this openly.

“You’ll find her,” I said at last. “Nature doesn’t miss. It’s just not time yet.”

He didn’t answer, and I knew better than to push. So I shifted the topic. “Anyway, the pack’s fine. Patrols steady, no rogues in the last week. Training’s on track Lena’s been helping with drills. Kids love her.”

Another pause, but softer this time. “She’s good for you,” he muttered.

“Finally, some approval,” I teased, though I didn’t miss the edge in his tone.

We ran through more updates the treaties, repairs, the usual politics. It felt good, normal. Until—

The front door creaked below.

“Finn?” Lena’s voice called up the stairs.

“Yeah, love, I’m here,” I answered with a smile.

Then another voice carried up. Softer. Bright, almost musical. A laugh.

And my Alpha went still on the line.

“Who’s that?” His voice snapped sharp.

“That voice. Who’s there?”

I hesitated. “That’s… Lena. And—” I swallowed, choosing my words carefully, “her cousin. Aria.” She just cane back from the bonfire with Lila.

A dangerous silence. “Why the hesitation, Finn? I’ve known Lena for years. Never once heard of a cousin named Aria. Which side is she from?”

Shit.

I forced a laugh. “Distant side. You know how families are, always pulling names from nowhere.”

“You’re lying.” His voice was flat steel.

I rubbed my jaw, silent. Because he wasn’t wrong, I hadn’t told him. I’d brought Aria into the pack without his permission, betting on my instincts, betting I could handle the consequences later.

The sound of her laugh drifted up again. And through the phone, I heard him inhale sharply then nothing. His wolf surged, I could hear it in the subtle growl threading his silence.

“Kaelen?” I asked cautiously.

No answer. Just his breathing, rougher now.

Finally, he said, clipped, “I’ll call tomorrow.” And the line went dead.

Switch – Alpha’s POV (mini backstory)

He dropped the phone onto the table, jaw tight.

Black was pacing, restless, ears pricked as though hunting prey. Who was that? his wolf pressed, low and insistent.

He ground his teeth. No one. Just a voice.

But it wasn’t just a voice. Something had stirred, sharper than anything he’d felt at the Selection. Weeks surrounded by hopeful she wolves and not a flicker and now, this.

He shoved the thought aside. He couldn’t afford distraction. He’d left for one reason: to try, one last time, to find what his parents once had. To silence the whispers that the Alpha of Midnight pack was destined to lead alone.

And yet..

Black growled, deep in his chest. His wolf had leapt at the sound, clawing at the edges of control

He closed his eyes, forcing it down.

It couldn’t be her. Whoever she was, she wasn’t his.

And still the echo of her laugh clung to him long into the night.

Somewhere between midnight and dawn, he realized he hadn’t felt his wolf this alive in years.

All because of a voice.

A stranger’s voice.

And no matter how many times he told himself it was nothing, that sound wouldn’t leave him.

~Aria ~No one really knew when the Alpha was supposed to return.Everyone had a different theory some said in a few days, some said next week but honestly, at this point, it was starting to sound like one of those things people said just to keep hope alive.Life in the pack went on as usual.Theo had been… around.More than usual, actually. He’d show up when Lila and I were training, or stop by when Lena was heading to the market. He was always “just passing by,” but somehow, he always managed to end up staying.I wasn’t complaining though. Not that I’d admit that out loud. Then, two days before the Alpha’s supposed return, Lena said we were going to their parents’ house.Apparently, Finn had to leave for some urgent pack business, and she didn’t want me staying home alone.“I’ll be fine,” I told her.She just raised a brow. “You’ll come with us, and that’s final.”So I went.Their parents’ house sat near the edge of the pack territory a beautiful, warm place that smelled like cinnam

~Aria~If I’m being honest, the next day just… happened.Like, it started, and then it ended, and somewhere between breakfast and nightfall, I’m pretty sure I blinked for five minutes and suddenly the sun had relocated itself.I woke up to the smell of toast and eggs Lena’s I care but I don’t want you to know I care kind of breakfast. Lila was already at the table, her hair a wild mess, singing something off key while trying to butter toast that didn’t deserve it.“Morning, sleeping beauty,” she said with a mouthful.“Morning, chaos incarnate,” I replied, pouring juice.Lena shot us both a look over her mug. “If you two are done reenacting a sitcom, grab your food before I lose patience.”“Yes, mother,” Lila and I chorused.Theo didn’t show up that morning thank the Moon Goddess because I had no idea what I’d say if he did. ‘Hey, thanks for licking my ear last night, really appreciate the gesture’? Yeah, no thanks. The day went by peacefully enough. Lila and I helped clean up the por

~ Aria~I didn’t realize how much I’d missed this running. Not as a human, but as something wild and free. When Violet stirred beneath my skin, I didn’t fight it. The world blurred into silver and green as paws hit the forest floor, and the air filled with the sound of howls and laughter echoing through the trees. Everyone’s energy was different tonight carefree, playful, like the pack was finally breathing again after holding itself together for too long.Theo’s wolf ran beside me most of the time.Massive. Dark furred. The kind that made the ground feel small under his stride. There was something steady about the way he moved strong but quiet, like he carried the night in his bones. At one point, we slowed near the edge of the woods, our breaths coming out in clouds. I turned to look at him, expecting nothing more than a teasing grin. But then, he leaned in and licked the back of my ear.It happened so fast I almost froze mid breath.Wolves around us went still for a heartbeat.I di

~Theo~ The message ticked to “delivered,” and the faint glow from the phone lit up his face in the dim room. I lay flat on my bed, one arm folded under my head, the other holding the phone above me . The words Sweet dreams, Aria stared back at me, almost glowing against the darkness. I chuckled softly to myself . I wasn’t supposed to text her tonight. Not really. I had just wanted to make sure the phone worked a simple check, that was all. But the moment she replied, something easy settled in me Her words had felt… light. Genuine. The kind of honesty that didn’t need effort. I tossed the phone gently onto the pillow beside me and stared at the ceiling. “You’re getting ahead of yourself, man,” I muttered. I could still see her face in my head, the way she’d smiled when she laughed, the way she’d tried to hide it behind her hair, and the way she’d said friends like she was convincing herself it was enough. Friends. I exhaled through my nose and sat up, resting my elbows

As we stepped out of the store, a familiar voice called, “Hey!” We turned and there was Theo. He was Leaning against his car, hands in pockets, looking like someone who didn’t know how good he looked. Lila grinned. “Perfect timing! We were just talking about you.” Theo shot her a look, and she winked before turning to me. “He was the one that asked for your number, remember? But since you didn’t have a phone…” She trailed off when she saw the small gift bag in his hand. “Oh no. What’s this?” He scratched the back of his neck. “Uh. You should open it.” I frowned, taking the bag carefully. I unwrapped the paper and blinked, inside was a slim phone, the latest model but simple, elegant, not flashy. “Theo, I” He raised his hand before I could finish. “You can. It’s just a gift. No strings.” Then, a small grin crept onto his lips. “And maybe a number.” “A number?” “I, uh, already put my number in it.” He winked. Lila, who had been hovering nearby, gasped in the

  • Her Second Mate   Chapter 10

~Aria~The bonfire had burned down to amber ash by the time we got back to the house. Everyone smelled like smoke and laughter, the kind that clung to your hair and refused to leave. The drive back from the bonfire was quiet, except for the hum of the engine and the faint rustle of wind against the car windows. Lena had come to pick us up, her headlights cutting through the night as laughter still lingered in my head. She’d dropped Lila off first at their parents’ house, and when she offered to come inside for a minute, I quickly shook my head. “I’ll just wait in the car,” I said. “I’m too tired to socialize again.” Lena had smiled, that soft, knowing kind of smile she always had. “That’s fine, sweetheart. No one’s rushing you.” By the time she drove me back to her and Finn’s house, the night had fully settled in that deep kind of quiet that made every sound sharper. The front door creaked softly as we stepped in. “Babe, where are you?” Lena called out, setting her keys on the
