Chapter 3

Penulis: Evening Breeze
"You should be apologizing to my girl, not me!" Scott complained angrily.

At his words, the manager quickly bowed and apologized to Roanna as well.

"I'm terribly sorry, Miss Sterling. I will take care of this immediately."

Roanna raised her chin proudly, shooting me a smug look.

So what if I was Scott's lawfully wedded wife? I still couldn't compare to his mistress in the slightest.

The manager immediately turned to me, his face cold and stern. "Ma'am the exit is that way. Please leave, and refrain from disturbing others like you did today."

Then, he immediately started goading me towards the exit, making sure I couldn't walk any other way.

As I walked, I saw Scott walking away, his arm around Roanna as he comforted her and kissed her gently.

Once upon a time, he treated me like that too, but I was a fool for not realizing that people could change.

Mary, having noticed my delayed absence, came looking for me. Seeing the manager trying to kick me out, she immediately took out her premium membership card and threw it in the manager's face.

"Did you think that man was the only premium member around here? Besides, don't you know who this lady is? She's that man's lawfully wedded wife!"

The manager turned pale, stumbling over his apologies. "I'm incredibly sorry, I didn't realize! Mr. Harris always comes here with Miss Sterling, so all our staff believed that…"

He trailed off, but his meaning was clear. All of them thought that Roanna was Scott's lover.

Mary looked like she was going to explode with anger, but I gently tugged her arm. "Forget it. It's not his fault."

Her eyes reddened, tears threatening to fall out. "How could that man treat you like this when you're going through such a tough time?"

"Let's not talk about him anymore, Mary," I cut her off. "Let's just enjoy our meal, alright? After all…"

My days were numbered, and soon enough, we wouldn't even be able to eat together anymore.

Bursting into tears, Mary hugged me tightly, and at that moment, I found myself wondering… Would Scott cry for me like this at my funeral?

Would he regret everything he ever did to me?

-

During a thunderstorm, I fainted at home. My heart couldn't supply enough blood, after all, so my body was already fragile to begin with.

When the ambulance arrived, I thought I saw a familiar figure through my hazy vision. He pleaded in a trembling voice, as if he was going to cry, "Don't fall asleep, Wendy! Please don't fall asleep!"

Those words sounded familiar. Back when I first took a bullet for this man overseas, he had cried just like this, begging me not to lose consciousness.

Did Scott love me? Of course he did.

We grew up together, and were lasting fixtures in each others' lives.

I still remember a thunderstorm that happened when we were little the scared me so badly that I leapt into his arms, and from that moment on, he knew that thunder was what I feared the most.

"Aw, what a scaredy cat! Don't worry, I'll protect you!"

From then on, he'd always come and keep me company whenever a thunderstorm rolled in, keeping me safe.

Whenever the weather forecast predicted lightning, no matter how busy he was, he'd cancel everything to be with me and keep me company through the long nights.

"No matter where I am, as long as there's thunder, I'll find a way to be by your side," he promised.

Because of that, I slowly became less afraid of thunder as time went on.

Today was a stormy night too, and the fear of thunder kept me awake. I sat at home alone until midnight, and when the first thunderclap cracked through the sky, a video appeared on my social media feed—fireworks blooming in the sky in celebration of Roanna's birthday.

Those professional-grade fireworks were worth millions, so there was no way she could afford those on her own.

In the video she posted, I saw a familiar side profile.

The city was far too big. In one place, there was thunder and lightning, while in another, the night sky was clear with starlight.

With the thunder rumbling and my heart beating far too fast, I collapsed inside my own closet.

"Don't worry, I'll be by your side even if there's a thunderstorm, alright?"I hummed in response."I'll hug you and protect you so that the lightning hits me first! Wait, if anything, I'd want the lightning to hit that guy first…"I smiled weakly.I wanted to tell her not to mention that man anymore, and that it was boring, but I didn't have the energy to say it anymore."Wendy, can you still hear me?""...""Wendy? Don't scare me!""Wendy!"'Sorry, Mary. The sunlight really is too nice, and I just really want to take a nap.'If we can't outrun the coming storm, we should just… Let it be.'-The day Wendy died, the sky roared with thunder all night, and rain poured endlessly from the sky.Scott rushed from the airport to the train station, trying every possible way to find her, but the flights were grounded and the trains were canceled. He was doomed to never see her one last time. When he finally drove over a thousand kilometers to catch up, all that was left was a hea

I wanted to go somewhere warm, somewhere I could feel the warm sunlight on every inch of my skin.In response, Mary brought me to Springville, where every season was warm and lightning was few and far between. The both of us rented a small house there, where the sun poured in every day. However, my body got worse. Even lifting my arms sometimes caused dizziness from lack of circulation. Despite this, Mary never complained, carrying me onto the wheelchair and insisting on bringing me out to bask in the sun each and every day.Every time I dozed off in the courtyard, she'd gently press her hand on my chest, feeling for the heartbeat that was barely there. She would then cry—silently, so that I wouldn't be roused from my slumber.I wanted nothing more than to comfort her, but I couldn't even lift a hand anymore. The sunlight could warm my skin all day, but it was as if my whole body was trapped in everlasting ice.And so, my heart beat on, slowly and faintly.-One day, an unwelc

However, no one knew just how much I sacrificed for this marriage. The enemies of the Harris family, having failed in their kidnapping, bore a grudge. Now knowing that they had no way of hurting them directly, they set their sights on my family instead. The second day of our marriage, a heavy truck barrelled into my parents as they were driving home, and they died on the spot. After the incident was ruled an accident, I received a message from an anonymous sender."They died because of you."Before I could even screenshot it, the message vanished.I didn't even know if I imagined it.I never told Scott about any of it. I knew I shouldn't hate him, and I couldn't bring myself to blame him.The only person who I hated was myself.Because I loved Scott, and because I married him, I had to pay the price. After that, I could no longer look at him in the face and tell him that I loved him. Every time I saw him, I saw my parents' bodies, stitched up in the morgue.I couldn't think

"You didn't know a damn thing, because while her chest was being cut open, you were off kissing Roanna at a new year's party!" Mary spat, trembling with rage as tears ran down her cheeks. "Are you sure you aren't the one with a fake heart, Scott?"-The hospital ward was quiet for a very long time. After what seemed like an eternity, Scott finally opened his mouth, his voice choked with emotion, "But she… She was the one who acted coldly to me and ignored me in the first place…"We'd only been married for a month, and she already stopped loving me. I tried so hard, but she wouldn't say much to me at all… I-If we had talked more, then…"Mary immediately cut him off, "Oh, shut up! Are you going to stand there and tell me that you cheated because she was giving you the cold shoulder? Did you think that she stopped talking to you because she didn't love you? Well, you're wrong!""Then why did she?"Mary didn't give him a reply. "Just… Let her tell you herself."-The first tim

Scott looked quite annoyed."Stop spouting nonsense. The doctor told me your artificial heart is strong, and you look perfectly fine to me! If you were going to die, you would've died during the surgery, so stop using your heart to scare me!"Hearing his words, I completely lost control over my heartbeat. I gasped like a fish out of water, completely losing control of my heart rate and my body.It wasn't until I collapsed onto the ground, body limp and lips turning a startling shade of blue, that Scott finally realized how serious it was."An ambulance! Call an ambulance now!"My heartbeat was so deafening that I couldn't hear anything else, and all I could see was the panic-struck look on Scott's face.He seemed to be begging me again, begging for my heart to slow down, but this time, my heart no longer listened to him.-I was brought to the hospital, and all I saw as I faded in and out of consciousness was Scott's face, streaked with tears. He was talking to me, but I couldn

I asked to meet Scott in the parking lot, and Roanna came together with him."What do you want?" Scott asked impatiently, his voice filled with annoyance.I didn't have the energy to argue, so I replied quietly, "Give me back the prayer card my parents gave me. It's in your car."He hadn't guessed that that's what I wanted. He threw his car keys towards me, hitting my shoulder.Judging from the sharp pain, it probably left a bruise."Go get it yourself."When I checked inside the car, I didn't manage to find the card where it was usually hung up."It's not here. Where's it? The one my parents got for me, remember?"Before Scott replied, Roanna chimed up, "Are you talking about that old thing? It was gross and dusty—and totally clashed with the aesthetic of Scott's car, so I threw it away! You wouldn't blame me right, Scott?"In an instant, I lunged forward and grabbed her collar, gritting my teeth. "What did you say? Threw it away? Where?!""Ahh!" Roanna screeched, reaching t
