Chapter 2

Penulis: Evening Breeze
"Hey, since Miss Palmer is fine, can you take me to the movies now? Oh, I really want to try out that new French place in the city center, people say it's amazing!"

I stood there in the wind, my nose and fingertips red from the cold.

As the engine blared to life, Scott said, "Since you're fine, then go home on your own, yeah? We've got plans."

Roanna smiled and waved her hand at me. "We'll head off then, Miss Palmer! Take care of your health and live a long life, alright?"

Then, the window rolled up, and they drove off, leaving me there all alone.

"Live a long life… Huh…?"

-

Mary invited me out to eat, and ironically, it was the French restaurant that Roanna had mentioned earlier.

The place was spacious and packed with people. Midway through the meal, I went to the restroom, only to bump straight into Roanna.

She stood there, huffing and puffing as she glared at me like an angry little rabbit. "Are you stalking us? You're trying to ruin my date with Scott, aren't you?!"

I only smiled softly. "Dates are for unmarried couples, Roanna. What you and Scott are doing is called sneaking around."

Roanna practically exploded with rage. "Y-You're just jealous of me! You're jealous that I'm young and pretty, and that I won his heart!

"Have you looked in the mirror lately? Your lips are purple, your eyes are dull, and even your heart is fake! How could someone like you be with him?"

Even now, I couldn't believe that Scott let her know about my artificial heart, just like that. He really did give her everything, even what he promised was mine—his heart.

Out of nowhere, Roanna stomped her foot as hard as she could, as if she was trying to crush me beneath her feet. However, her lambskin boots didn't have any grip, so she immediately slipped and fell on the polished floor.

"Ow!"

Scott immediately rushed over, and the moment I saw him, my heart started beating in overdrive.

I clutched my chest, forcing myself to take deep breaths in an effort to calm myself down.

Between the two women who stood there, his husband and his mistress, he hesitated for a moment before helping Roanna up from the floor.

He was frowning, but his voice was filled with concern. "How did you fall like that?"

In response, Roanna went limp and collapsed right into his arms, sniffling softly. "I found her stalking us, and I just wanted to tell her that it wasn't right, b-but she- She called me a dirty homewrecker!

"My feelings for you are real, and your feelings are the real deal too, right? I don't want to be a mistress!"

She buried herself in his chest, like she was sobbing her heart out. Meanwhile, I leaned against the wall, trying my hardest to calm my breathing.

Scott turned to me, voice sharp, "Did you really say that to her?"

In my pain, I couldn't even muster up a single word, so I just averted my gaze.

"Look at her! She can't even make excuses because of her guilty conscience! She bullied me so badly that I scraped my hand! It's all her fault!"

She was the one who fell flat all on her own, yet that somehow became my fault too.

Frowning, Scott ordered, "Well? Speak!"

He seemed to be waiting for some sort of explanation, but I couldn't say a single word—not that I would, even if I could.

His eyes glinted dangerously. "I never expected for you to sink this low, Wendy. What kind of person bullies a helpless young girl? If you've got a problem, take it out on me!"

At that moment, the restaurant manager noticed that something was happening and came towards us to check.

In response, Scott said, "I'm a premium member of your group, and I suspect this woman stalked us and followed us here. Is this how you protect your customers' privacy?"

This restaurant was one of the properties under the name of a renowned group, and their premium membership wasn't something that could be acquired with just money, requiring a referral from an existing member as well.

The manager immediately bowed deeply towards Scott. "I'm terribly sorry, Mr. Harris. I will make sure this woman leaves our premises immediately."

"Don't worry, I'll be by your side even if there's a thunderstorm, alright?"I hummed in response."I'll hug you and protect you so that the lightning hits me first! Wait, if anything, I'd want the lightning to hit that guy first…"I smiled weakly.I wanted to tell her not to mention that man anymore, and that it was boring, but I didn't have the energy to say it anymore."Wendy, can you still hear me?""...""Wendy? Don't scare me!""Wendy!"'Sorry, Mary. The sunlight really is too nice, and I just really want to take a nap.'If we can't outrun the coming storm, we should just… Let it be.'-The day Wendy died, the sky roared with thunder all night, and rain poured endlessly from the sky.Scott rushed from the airport to the train station, trying every possible way to find her, but the flights were grounded and the trains were canceled. He was doomed to never see her one last time. When he finally drove over a thousand kilometers to catch up, all that was left was a hea

I wanted to go somewhere warm, somewhere I could feel the warm sunlight on every inch of my skin.In response, Mary brought me to Springville, where every season was warm and lightning was few and far between. The both of us rented a small house there, where the sun poured in every day. However, my body got worse. Even lifting my arms sometimes caused dizziness from lack of circulation. Despite this, Mary never complained, carrying me onto the wheelchair and insisting on bringing me out to bask in the sun each and every day.Every time I dozed off in the courtyard, she'd gently press her hand on my chest, feeling for the heartbeat that was barely there. She would then cry—silently, so that I wouldn't be roused from my slumber.I wanted nothing more than to comfort her, but I couldn't even lift a hand anymore. The sunlight could warm my skin all day, but it was as if my whole body was trapped in everlasting ice.And so, my heart beat on, slowly and faintly.-One day, an unwelc

However, no one knew just how much I sacrificed for this marriage. The enemies of the Harris family, having failed in their kidnapping, bore a grudge. Now knowing that they had no way of hurting them directly, they set their sights on my family instead. The second day of our marriage, a heavy truck barrelled into my parents as they were driving home, and they died on the spot. After the incident was ruled an accident, I received a message from an anonymous sender."They died because of you."Before I could even screenshot it, the message vanished.I didn't even know if I imagined it.I never told Scott about any of it. I knew I shouldn't hate him, and I couldn't bring myself to blame him.The only person who I hated was myself.Because I loved Scott, and because I married him, I had to pay the price. After that, I could no longer look at him in the face and tell him that I loved him. Every time I saw him, I saw my parents' bodies, stitched up in the morgue.I couldn't think

"You didn't know a damn thing, because while her chest was being cut open, you were off kissing Roanna at a new year's party!" Mary spat, trembling with rage as tears ran down her cheeks. "Are you sure you aren't the one with a fake heart, Scott?"-The hospital ward was quiet for a very long time. After what seemed like an eternity, Scott finally opened his mouth, his voice choked with emotion, "But she… She was the one who acted coldly to me and ignored me in the first place…"We'd only been married for a month, and she already stopped loving me. I tried so hard, but she wouldn't say much to me at all… I-If we had talked more, then…"Mary immediately cut him off, "Oh, shut up! Are you going to stand there and tell me that you cheated because she was giving you the cold shoulder? Did you think that she stopped talking to you because she didn't love you? Well, you're wrong!""Then why did she?"Mary didn't give him a reply. "Just… Let her tell you herself."-The first tim

Scott looked quite annoyed."Stop spouting nonsense. The doctor told me your artificial heart is strong, and you look perfectly fine to me! If you were going to die, you would've died during the surgery, so stop using your heart to scare me!"Hearing his words, I completely lost control over my heartbeat. I gasped like a fish out of water, completely losing control of my heart rate and my body.It wasn't until I collapsed onto the ground, body limp and lips turning a startling shade of blue, that Scott finally realized how serious it was."An ambulance! Call an ambulance now!"My heartbeat was so deafening that I couldn't hear anything else, and all I could see was the panic-struck look on Scott's face.He seemed to be begging me again, begging for my heart to slow down, but this time, my heart no longer listened to him.-I was brought to the hospital, and all I saw as I faded in and out of consciousness was Scott's face, streaked with tears. He was talking to me, but I couldn

I asked to meet Scott in the parking lot, and Roanna came together with him."What do you want?" Scott asked impatiently, his voice filled with annoyance.I didn't have the energy to argue, so I replied quietly, "Give me back the prayer card my parents gave me. It's in your car."He hadn't guessed that that's what I wanted. He threw his car keys towards me, hitting my shoulder.Judging from the sharp pain, it probably left a bruise."Go get it yourself."When I checked inside the car, I didn't manage to find the card where it was usually hung up."It's not here. Where's it? The one my parents got for me, remember?"Before Scott replied, Roanna chimed up, "Are you talking about that old thing? It was gross and dusty—and totally clashed with the aesthetic of Scott's car, so I threw it away! You wouldn't blame me right, Scott?"In an instant, I lunged forward and grabbed her collar, gritting my teeth. "What did you say? Threw it away? Where?!""Ahh!" Roanna screeched, reaching t
