Grace's POV

I stepped into the office and felt it immediately. The tension humming from Hunter's office.

Great. He was in a mood. I could always tell. He didn't even need to speak. The air shifted when he was pissed.

His door was open. He sat behind his desk, eyes fixed on the screen, jaw tight. I didn't look at him for more than a second. Just walked to my desk like I hadn't felt his gaze snap to me the moment I stepped into the room.

I clicked into my emails, my fingers moving across the keys.

"Grace." Hunter's voice cut through the thick silence. "A minute?"

I hesitated for a moment, then stepped into his office. He gestured for me to close the door.

"How was lunch?" he asked.

"Fine. Maya arrived in time. Thanks for letting her know." I sat in the chair across from him, keeping my back straight, professional. We didn't have the kind of relationship where I would go to his side of the desk and put my arms around his neck... even if I wanted to.

"And how did Quinn take the news?" Dir

Paulo's face went white. "Me? Dead? No. I don't think so. Why?"Quinn leaned forward. "Because if the brakes were tampered with, someone wanted that car to crash. Either Helena was the target, or you were.""Or both," I added, my voice flat.Paulo shook his head quickly. "No one wants me dead. I'm nobody. Just a personal trainer.""A personal trainer fucking a billionaire's wife," Quinn corrected. "That makes you somebody. Just how many clients have you fooled around with? Did you dump someone that could get jealous enough to kill? See Helena as standing in the way?"I looked at Quinn, surprised how her mind worked. Why hadn't I thought of that?Paulo's expression shifted, something uncomfortable crossing his features. "There was someone. A few months back. Before Helena became... more serious, well I thought it was.""Serious." I nearly laughed at the word. "Define serious." The man was my wife's piece on the side."Look, man, I know you don't want to hear this, but Helena and I... i

Hunter's POVPaulo's apartment building was in Brooklyn, a converted warehouse with exposed brick and rustic fixtures. The kind of place that screamed "I'm with the IT crowd." The place would cost more per square foot than most Manhattan penthouses.Quinn kept pace beside me, her heels clicking against the concrete as we approached the entrance. "Remember," she said, her voice low and sharp, "you're here for information. Not vengeance.""I know what I'm here for." I needed answers, and I felt like people like the police were feeding me only part of the full story and keeping bits to themselves."Do you?" She grabbed my arm, forcing me to stop. "Because you look like you're about to tear someone apart."I yanked free, jaw clenched. "He was fucking my wife, Quinn. While she lied to everyone. While she made Grace carry our child. All the while, she could get pregnant herself, which she did, and killed it. I need to know why. This is your friend and soon to be my wife."Quinn's expression

Grace's POVThe nausea hit without warning.I bolted from Hunter's office, my hand clamped over my mouth as I ran for the bathroom, even though I could have used Hunter's personal bathroom. I barely made it to a stall before I was sick, my stomach heaving violently.Morning sickness. Or stress. Maybe both.I heard the bathroom door open, then Quinn's voice. "Grace?"I couldn't answer, another wave hitting me. Quinn appeared, pulling my hair back and rubbing circles on my back. When I finally finished, she helped me to the sink. My reflection looked terrible. I was so pale, eyes watering, mascara smudged."First trimester's a bitch," Quinn said quietly, wetting paper towels.I nodded, accepting them gratefully. "I need to get back. Hunter—""Hunter can wait." Quinn's voice was firm. "Let's worry about you for a moment. Sit down for a minute."I perched on the bench by the wall, head in my hands. The news about Helena's abortion kept spinning through my mind. She'd been pregnant. She'd

Grace's POVMonday morning, the two detectives arrived at the office without warning. I looked up from my computer to find them standing at my desk, Detective Morrison with that neutral expression cops seemed to perfect, Detective Elliott scanning the office, taking in every detail."Ms. Wilson," Morrison said. "We need to speak with Mr. Sinclair."My stomach dropped. "Do you have an appointment?""We don't need one." Morrison's tone wasn't hostile, just matter-of-fact. "This is an official investigation."I picked up the phone, pulse hammering. Hunter answered on the first ring."The detectives are here to see you."A pause. "Send them in.""Should I—""Yes. Come in with them."I set down the phone, fingers trembling slightly. "He'll see you now. Just give me one moment."I turned away, pulling my cell from my purse and texting Quinn quickly.Grace: Detectives here. Hunter's office. NOW.The response came immediately.Quinn: On my way. Don't let him say ANYTHING until I arrive.I sto

  • Her Sister’s Surrogate   Chapter Sixty-Eight

Grace's POVTwo hours later, I stood in our bathroom, staring at my reflection. I'd chosen a simple black dress, it was modest, nothing that would draw attention. My hair was pulled back in a neat ponytail, makeup minimal.I looked the part of the grieving sister, though the woman staring back at me looked more like someone preparing for an execution. I was acting like I had done something wrong, which was stupid. The thing that had me most worried was the police thinking Hunter had done something.Hunter appeared in the doorway, immaculate in one of his dark suits. Our eyes met in the mirror."Ready?" he asked."No, but we have little choice."The drive to the station was tense, neither of us speaking much. Quinn met us outside, her expression serious as she assessed us both."Remember," she said quietly as we approached the entrance, "answer only what they ask. Don't volunteer information. If you're uncomfortable with a question, look to me before answering." Quinn hugged me. "You lo

Grace's POVI woke with Hunter still pressed against my back, his arm heavy around my waist. My mind immediately raced to what awaited us at the police station in a few hours. I lay there for a few minutes thinking about all the questions they could ask."You're thinking too loud," Hunter murmured against my neck, his breath warm on my skin.I turned in his arms to face him. "How can you tell?""Your breathing changes. Gets shallow." His eyes were still half-closed with sleep, but there was alertness in them. "You tense up."My lips curved slightly. "You notice too much.""I notice everything about you." His hand smoothed up my side, resting at my waist. "Especially when you're worried."The simple intimacy of that observation made my chest tighten. "I'm scared about today." I hadn't slept well at all last night, lying awake long after Hunter had gone to sleep. He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. "I know. But we have nothing to hide about Helena's death.""They're going to ask q
