Hunter's POV

I stood in the doorway of the Wilson home, feeling more like a man walking into a war zone than a man arriving for a family dinner. Grace stood beside me; the tension was radiating off her in waves despite the calm smile she wore. I rested my hand lightly on the small of her back, letting her know I was with her in this. She wasn't alone and never would be again.

"Ready?" I asked quietly.

She nodded, though she looked anything but. "As I'll ever be. I'm worried about how she is going to take it at first. Knowing I'm stepping into her beloved daughter's shoes, so to speak."

The door opened before she could ring the bell or I could say anything to her statement.

Because she wasn't filling Helena's shoes. She was her own person, and she was a better person than Helena, why couldn't she see that? Then again why hadn't I?

But Margo Wilson stood there, immaculately dressed and every hair in place as always, her sharp eyes taking in our proximity to each other with a flicker of

I followed the guard through a maze of security checkpoints, Hunter behind me, Quinn’sin front. The stark fluorescent lights cast everything in a harsh glow, making the already sterile environment feel even more lifeless. I’d never been inside a detention facility before, had never imagined I’d be visiting my own mother in one. I had thought I didn’t need this… but I did.“Through here,” the officer said, stopping at a door marked Attorney–Client Room 3. “We’re making an exception for privacy since her lawyer requested it. Normally it would be through glass with other visitors present.”Quinn nodded. “We appreciate that. Thank you.”“I’ll be right outside,” he assured us, unlocking the door. “Just knock when you’re finished.”My heart hammered against my ribs as we stepped inside. The room was small, containing only a metal table bolted to the floor and four chairs. No windows. Just a single camera mounted in the corner. The light on it wasn’t blinking, so they weren’t recording. Also

Grace's POVI woke up with a start, heart hammering in my chest. The nightmare that had jolted me awake was already fading, leaving behind only fragments—Mom in handcuffs, Helena's diary, Emma's sneering face. I sat up, reaching for Hunter instinctively, but his side of the bed was empty, the sheets cool beneath my fingers. The angle of the light streaming through the gaps in the curtains, told me it was well past my usual wake-up time. I checked my phone; it was nearly ten. Hunter had let me sleep in.I slipped out of bed and pulled on Hunter's discarded dress shirt from last night, walking barefoot through our penthouse suite. I found him on the balcony, already dressed in casual clothes, coffee in hand as he scrolled through his phone. He looked up when I stepped outside, his face softening."Morning, beautiful," he said, setting his phone down and reaching for me. "Sleep well?""Eventually." I nestled against him, stealing just one sip of his coffee. "Any news?""No more coffee fo

The ride back to the hotel was short, but enough time for the adrenaline rush from confronting Emma to start wearing off. And my heart to stop pounding. Hunter kept our fingers intertwined on his thigh, occasionally bringing my hand to his lips, a possessive gesture that somehow still made butterflies swirl in my stomach."You were incredible back there," he murmured, pride evident in his voice. "I've never seen you stand your ground like that. Unless you're having a go at me, that is."I leaned against his shoulder, exhaustion suddenly hitting me. "I surprised myself too. But I meant every word.""I know you did." He squeezed my hand. "That's what made it so powerful."When we arrived at the hotel and Hunter opened the door to the penthouse suite, our friends and family were already there, having left at the same time. Maya immediately bounded over, pulling me into a fierce hug."That was epic, Grace! The look on Emma's face when you shut her down, I wish I had it on camera. But I'm

I watched Emma try to kiss Hunter on the lips, her arms wrapping around his neck like some kind of possessive octopus. The pure shock on his face might have been comical if it wasn't so infuriating. Before I could even process what was happening, Hunter pushed her off him and away and rushed to my side.Emma's face twisted with fury. I'd seen that look before… on Helena when she didn't get her way. That calculated rage that promised retribution. If I could live through Helena I could deal with someone like Emma."Hunter," she called, her voice dripping with false sweetness as she followed him. "Don't be like that. We have history." She tossed her perfect blonde hair over one shoulder, her eyes never leaving his face. "You can't possibly be happy with this arrangement." Eyeing me up and down like I was dirt on her shoes.I felt Hunter's arm slide around my waist, solid and protective. The touch warmed me, reminding me that I wasn't that insecure woman anymore, desperate for scraps of h

One Week laterI adjusted the necklace around my neck, it felt too tight as I checked my reflection for the fifth time. This was our first public appearance as a couple since Mom's arraignment, where she'd pleaded not guilty to all charges, just as Quinn had predicted. Tonight's charity gala for children's cancer research was important to Hunter, the Sinclair family was the main sponsor, but my nerves had nothing to do with the cause and everything to do with being on display. Things had been easier at the office, but the public were different."You look beautiful," Hunter said, appearing behind me in the mirror. His hands settled on my shoulders, warm and reassuring. "Stop worrying." Then he kissed my bare shoulder.I smoothed down the midnight blue gown I'd chosen carefully, elegant but understated, the empire waistline giving no hint of my still-flat stomach. At twelve weeks, I wasn't showing yet, but the dress would hide our secret either way. Only family knew about the twins."Wha

The next morning, I woke to Hunter's arm draped possessively over my waist, his breath warm against my neck. For a moment, I let myself drift in that hazy space between sleep and waking, content to just exist in this bubble with him.Until I remembered. My mother's arrest. The interview. The press. The story would be out by now. We would see if Quinn was right about the reporter.I carefully extracted myself from Hunter's embrace, sliding out of bed. He stirred but didn't wake, his face peaceful in sleep. I grabbed my robe slipped it over my naked body and tiptoed out of the bedroom, my stomach already churning with anxiety. In the kitchen, I made tea first, then checked the time. Just past seven. Early enough that the morning papers would be delivered but not so early that the full online media cycle had kicked in.I found Hunter's tablet on the counter and hesitated before unlocking it. Did I really want to know? Could I face whatever they'd written about us, about me?Before I could
