"Brother!" I raised my head at my Sage's call. I had been going over the never-ending paperwork that went along with managing our foundation and investments. I welcomed any distraction I could get.
"What's happening, baby sister?" I laced my hands behind my head and stretched as she came running through my study door.
"I was down near Four Corners and there's a woman camped there. The woman." I raised my eyebrows in question. "The one from town, Vivi Fenrir. I never dreamed she'd come so close to our property. What do you want to do?"
My posture instantly shifted. Every muscle in my body tensed at the thought of her being so close. The woman called Fenrir Sage had mentioned earlier. Surely it couldn't be a coincidence.
"I've got to speak to Kane." I tried to quench the lick of hope that flared in my chest. I kissed Sage on the top of her head as I ducked out of the room. "Thank you, sister."
Quickly finding my second, Kane and I shifted and set off to check out this woman my sister had mentions. We loped across the forest floor toward the campground our large, padded feet making barely a sound.
With our heightened vision in our shifted state and the full moon illuminating our way, the dark woods were almost as bright as day. The small human campground was only five miles from the pack compound. It was an easy run to check out this woman with the name of the Norse wolf born of the god Loki.
My nose to the wind, I skidded to a halt when a captivating scent curled around my head and teased my nostrils. Kane stopped and trotted back to me. We spoke in our telepathic language, Rhuhi, that we used in our wolf forms.
"What's wrong, Alpha? We have another mile to the campground," Kane asked.
"Don't you smell that?" I stood stock still, staring into the darkness. I sniffed again. That scent, intoxicating. It wrapped around my senses until nothing else could penetrate. My fur rippled across my body in pleasure. My eyes closed and a low growl hummed through my deep chest.
Kane tilted his head in confusion but raised his long nose to give a deep sniff. Suddenly, his eyes widened. "What is that delectable smell?"
"I don't know, something…magical." Without warning, I shifted to my human form and Kane quickly followed suit.
We stood, sniffing the air as if in a trance. A slight smile played on our lips. Despite the cold, I felt my cock standing to attention, my arousal growing as the intoxicating fragrance danced through my body and mind.
Kane apparently wasn’t much better off. When I glanced at him, his eyes were closed and he rubbed at the stylized wolf tattoo on his chest that every member of the pack sported somewhere on their bodies.
I did the same, the ink warming under my hand. It was all I could do to not take my cock in my hand and stroke myself to completion. As hard as I was, I didn’t think it would take a moment.
"Xander, what is it, brother?" Kane’s eyes slowly opened and his expression was almost pained under the ecstasy.
I started to walk slowly along the animal track we had been following to the campground. "I'm not sure. I just know I need to find her." Her? Where had that come from? But as the thought flitted through my head, I knew it as sure as my own name. "Yes, that's it - a female. That's it. I must find her."
I started to move more quickly, ignoring the branches lashing my human skin, and the stones and sticks bruising my feet.
"Alpha, wait for me!" Kane caught up in three quick strides and ran alongside me trying to keep up with my much longer strides.
Soon, we were at the edge of the campground. A smoldering fire in the stone lined pit burned merrily and there was a large, family-sized tent pitched near a red Jeep Cherokee. We stared, noses in the air, searching desperately for the source of the completely intoxicating scent.
A beautiful melody suddenly curled around my head like a sweet smoke. A song coming from the voice of an angel. I closed my eyes and swayed like a lovesick pup. Without conscious thought, my feet started moving toward the music.
Luckily, my Beta showed slightly more control this time and threw up an arm to stop me from going any farther. My eyes popped open and a low growl escaped my throat. “You were about to walk right into the human's camp." He scanned me up and down. "Like that."
I looked down at myself and saw the bleeding scratches covering my body and felt the pain on the bottom of my feet. I also noted I was so hard it was almost painful. Before I could ask more questions, the tantalizing scent came again. My head tipped back, and I groaned in pleasure. A shudder ran through me. "She's here," I said huskily.
Kane’s breath came in deep gasps and I could tell he was fighting for control as well. He whipped a hand up to his face and held his nose like he could block the scent from affecting him. It must have worked somewhat as he was able to take a strong hold of my arm and give me a quick shake. I would normally never be manhandled this way, but these were extenuating circumstances.
"We have to shift, Alpha. Heal our injuries and hide ourselves. If the woman is here, she's going to panic if she sees two large, tattooed, strange men walking into her camp. Shift, man!"
Finally hearing my friend's words. I dropped my head, sighed heavily, and with more effort than it had required in centuries, shifted. Kane quickly followed suit in relief. We melted back into the tree line and started to circle the camp.
The woman seemed to be alone. There was no evidence of any other presence. The smell of honeysuckle and vanilla permeated my senses as we got closer and closer to the tent. I could smell the lingering scent of coffee in the air as well as frying meat but overlying all these basic scents was the one that tugged at my very soul. Something unique to this female I had never scented before. I couldn't help but follow it and quickly found myself closing in on the woman's bright orange tent. Kane rushed to my side, calling to me in Rhuhi.
"Jesus, Alpha! What is happening to us?"
"I don’t know but it’s the most amazing thing I have ever experienced. I don't just smell it. It has invaded all my senses and my mind. I feel...alive!" My whole body shuddered again; my body so sensitized that the breeze rustling my fur had me groaning in need. I tried to move closer to the tent, but Kane suddenly blocked me with his body.
His black hackles rose and he bared a sharp canine. The shock of this show of aggression had me freezing in my tracks. My lips curled up in response and a low rumble sounded in my chest. Kane suddenly looked ashamed and cut his eyes from mine.
“I am so sorry, Alpha! I-I don’t know what came over me.” He lowered himself to the ground in front of me, showing his neck in a show of submission.
"Get up, Kane. I don’t know what’s happening either, only that I've never experienced anything like this before." I turned my head back to the tent. "I must see her, brother."
Kane swallowed and panted heavily, looking from me to the tent where a light suddenly clicked on.”
I whined and nearly came right there as the silhouette of a curvy woman stood outlined against the thin orange fabric of the tent.
My heart thudded so hard against my chest I thought my ribs would crack. Cutting a glance at my Beta, I knew he felt it, too-- an overwhelming need to see this woman, to touch her, to claim her. The need settled into the very marrow of my bones.
Then I heard the teeth of the zipper that closed the tent flaps start to part.
The summer solstice celebration was in full swing, the compound transformed into a festival of light and sound and joyous connection. Supernatural beings of all kinds mingled freely, their diverse energies creating a tapestry of power that shimmered in the evening air.I stood at the edge of the central clearing, watching as Lyra, now five years old, led a group of children in a traditional dance around the bonfire. Her movements were graceful beyond her years, her mismatched eyes—one gold, one silver—reflecting the flames as she guided her companions through the complex steps."She's remarkable," came a voice beside me, and I turned to find Councilor Lyra, her ancient eyes warm with approval as she watched her namesake. "The perfect balance of both worlds."I nodded, pride and love swelling in my chest as I watched my daughter. "She makes it look effortless. The connection, the balance, the bridge between different kinds of energy."And it was true. In the five years since the restor
ViviThe void stone rested on a specially constructed pedestal in the center of our magical research chamber, its dark energy contained within multiple layers of protective spells. Across from it, on a matching pedestal, the harmony crystal pulsed with silver-blue light, its presence seemingly calming the void stone's more chaotic tendencies."They recognize each other," Sage observed, her expertise in magical theory allowing her to perceive subtleties that others might miss. "There's a resonance between them, a pattern of energy exchange that suggests they were indeed designed to work as a complementary pair."I nodded, having sensed the same interaction since the artifacts were brought into proximity. "It's like they're communicating, reestablishing a connection that was severed when they were separated."Ronan, who had been studying ancient texts spread across a nearby table, looked up with excitement in his scholarly eyes. "That aligns perfectly with what I've found in the Council
EowynBalance. Harmony. Connection between different kinds of energy. These were the principles that had guided the creation of our sanctuary, the foundation of the equilibrium we had established between our world and the Void. And Lyra, with her mismatched eyes and dual nature, embodied those principles in her very being. Was it coincidence that she had been born at this specific moment in history, when the ancient artifacts were resurfacing and the barrier between worlds was once again in flux? Or was there some deeper pattern at work, some cosmic symmetry that had brought all these elements together at precisely this time?"You're quiet," Vivi observed, breaking into my thoughts as the others continued their tactical planning.I met her golden gaze with my silver one, knowing she would understand the direction of my thoughts without extensive explanation. "I'm wondering about patterns," I said simply. "About why all of this is happening now, in this specific way."She nodded, her e
EowynThe journey back to the compound was tense but uneventful, the crystal safely contained within a specially designed carrier that Sage had sent with the guards. The amulet we had created for Lyra's protection proved remarkably effective at stabilizing the crystal's energy during transport, confirming Vivi's theory about the connection between the artifact and Lyra's dual nature. As we approached the compound gates, I sensed a shift in the barrier's energy—not a disruption, but a kind of recognition, as if the ancient equilibrium was acknowledging the return of a long-missing component. The crystal, too, seemed to respond, its pulsing light synchronizing with the subtle rhythm of the barrier itself."It belongs here," I murmured to Vivi, who walked beside me. "This territory, this specific location—it's where the crystal was meant to be."She nodded, her golden eyes thoughtful. "Which raises the question of how it ended up in the northern caves, and why the Council scattered these
DaxThe northern caves were a half-day's journey from the compound, nestled in the rugged foothills that marked the boundary of our territory. As Ursula and I made our way through the forest, I found myself unusually alert to the subtle energies around us—perhaps influenced by the nature of our quest, or perhaps simply attuned to the possibility of danger."Something feels different," Ursula commented as we approached the cave system, her witch's senses more finely tuned to magical fluctuations than my shifter instincts. "The ambient energy is... agitated."I nodded, having noticed it myself despite my more limited magical perception. The air seemed charged, like the heaviness before a thunderstorm. "Julian's attack on the barrier might have affected all places where the boundaries between realities are naturally thin.""Perhaps," she agreed, though her expression remained troubled. "But this feels more... directed. As if something here is responding to the disturbance."That caught m
DaxI'd never been one for patience or strategic waiting. My instincts always pushed me toward action—direct, immediate, decisive. So the days following Julian's first attack tested every ounce of self-control I possessed."We should hit them first," I argued during yet another war council, pacing the room while the others remained seated around the table. "Take the fight to Julian before he can launch his next attack."Kane's expression remained impassive as he shook his head. "That's exactly what he wants, Dax. An aggressive move from us would validate his narrative that we're a threat to traditional supernatural society.""So we just sit here and wait?" I demanded, frustration making my voice sharper than intended. "Give him time to figure out how to use that void stone more effectively?""No," Xander replied, his calm authority a counterpoint to my agitation. "We prepare. We strengthen our defenses. We gather intelligence. And we develop countermeasures specifically designed to ne
