Whenever he thought about who Monica used to be, he felt as if he'd swallowed a thousand flies. His face twitched, and he was nearly white with rage.

Once he was done, he sat

I tapped out a reply: [Fine. The coffee shop across from the apartment complex.]The weather in Ashbury was the same as ever. There was no fog and no damp chill that I had to get used to overseas, only warm, bright sunshine.Too bad the lovely moment was ruined when Kevin pushed through the door.He stood frozen at the entrance for a few seconds before inching his way over to me.He sat down and swallowed hard. "Laurie, you've changed so much."I glanced at him coldly.Kevin didn't dare waste any time and went on, "Why haven't you answered any of my messages? I looked for you for so long. Nobody knew where you were."I brushed him off. "If you wanted to meet so you could give me the divorce agreement, you can hand it over now."At the words "divorce agreement," Kevin's eyes suddenly turned red.He stared straight at me, his voice hoarse. "Why..."I repeated myself again, impatient. "Why what? You've been stalling on our divorce for three years.""But we're not divorced!"Ke

His face twitched, and he was nearly white with rage.Once he was done, he sat back down on the couch and gave the coffee table a hard kick. His phone buzzed again. This time it wasn't the president, but a colleague he was fairly close with. "Professor Russell! Something's happened! Open your phone and watch the livestream!"That student of yours, Monica Lawrence, is telling the whole country right now that you're one of her clients..."The entire university's in an uproar. The president's holding an emergency meeting with the department heads to announce how they're

"Who on earth did you recommend? Who is Monica Lawrence to you? Do you even know this student of yours?"Do you know anything about her past? You didn't know a thing about her, and you still recommended her to the Operations Office! "Now her dirty past has been dug up, and people all over the country are laughing at our university online. They're saying we must be blind to hire a call girl as operations staff!"This university's hundred-year reputation has been destroyed overnight, and it's all thanks to you!"Kevin was chewed out so badly he couldn't get a word in edgewise. By the time he opened his mouth to explain, the president had already hung up.Kevin quickly pulled up the news and scrolled from top to bottom. By the end, he swayed and nearly toppled over. The president hadn't been joking.Monica's history as a mistress to older men had been exposed down to the last detail. In his eyes, Monica had been a pitiful, self-reliant student who'd endured people's scorn day in

Kevin clutched his phone and didn't sleep a wink all night. He'd thought that after all those calls, I'd at least call him back once.Too bad. There was nothing but silence on the line.A night passed, and I still hadn't come home.He frantically turned the house upside down. My ID was gone. My bank cards were gone. All that was left was the old suitcase in the walk-in closet. But there had never been much of my clothing in there to begin with. Whether I took it or not hardly mattered.Panic flooded in like water, crushing Kevin's nerves. His gaze landed on the divorce agreement, stained with grease and torn into several pieces in his fit of rage. His pupils darkened.Only now did he realize that the divorce agreement wasn't some trump card I'd pulled out to scare him.I really did want a divorce. He hurriedly called the company I used to work for, but HR told him I'd quit six months ago.Only then did he remember. I really had quit six months ago.For those six months,

The M-embroidered slippers on Monica's feet bobbed up and down, while I was still wearing a pair of disposable ones. The sizzle of hot oil drifted out from the kitchen. When she saw me, Monica stood up. There was no trace of her taunting from that afternoon, only an air of humble gratitude. "Laurel..."I walked past her and went to the walk-in closet to get my suitcase.Just then, Kevin Russell came out of the kitchen, his tone accusatory. "Laurel, why are you putting on airs? Monica came all the way here to thank you in person. Can't you be a little more gracious?"My gaze swept over him, a spatula in his hand and an apron tied around his waist. In all the time we'd been married, Kevin had never once cooked. He said his sinuses couldn't handle the cooking fumes. He said he was a university professor, and his hands were meant only for holding a pen.But now, for his beloved student, he had a spatula in one hand and a dishrag in the other. His sinus problems, his lofty airs, wer
