Chapter eight

Kayden's POV

The next few minutes happened in what seemed to be like a rush. One minute she passed out in my arms, the next, I was inside her Alpha's office. I laid her on the couch. I could sense and read from his thoughts that he did not like that one bit. But he would not dare to say anything.

“Alpha King… there must have been a mistake somewhere. Branka is not the kind of person you will want for your mate. I promise you that.” He said.

His tone and innuendo about her, I did not like it one bit. My gaze strayed over to the little girl whose name I’ve not heard before in my life. She looked so small and malnourished too.

Earlier while I was on the rooftop, I needed some air. My coming to this particular pack was to confirm some of the allegations alive being heard about the alpha not being capable and that he might be involved in some of the illegal things that have been happening around. Not like I would catch him directly, but I wanted to be here and see the way he ran things directly.

Nothing would have prepared me for the lay who walked into the place. From where I was standing in the dark, she looked tired. I ran on the warmer side because of my genes and the number of years that I had spent on this earth. But I knew that everywhere was cold.

I could not wrap my head around the fact that she was wearing something that tiny. Her body was shaking a little bit, but she might as well not know about it.

I had taken a step towards her to ask her why she was here in this cold weather like this when I heard the thoughts that were in her head. She wanted to die. It was so strong and imminent that I could almost feel the energy around her.

Then another thing took over that thought and suddenly, my heart that would normally beat a couple of times a day started to beat very rapidly. It was so fast that it caught me off balance for a while. I did not know why that was happening. And then my wolf started to move and prowl around in my head.

Mate mate mate.

The word was resonating over and over in my head. I could not keep to myself again and I walked towards her.

Our encounter ended rather more quickly and abruptly than I expected. She was scared. Of other people and me. Her alpha and some other pepper that I could not get, which gave me a grand scale of what could be happening to her. I could not hold it in and I had to stop the whole banquet. I did not know her name, but I could sense that she was not around here and they had to find her.

“And why would you think that Alpha Dorian?” I asked him. His eyes flashed a little like he was angry.

“She’s not your type of woman, Alpha king. I can arrange for you to see the most beautiful women of this pack.” He said assuredly.

“So, you mean to tell me now that I am making a mistake and that I don’t know my mate right?” I was surprised at how calm I sounded contrary to the anger that was in my head and that of my wolf’s. I was normally in tune with him. Given the fact that he’s been my companion for decades on end. But right now, he wanted to tear this alpha apart.

“No…no… I did not mean it like that. It’s just that, Branka is…. She’s the lowest here. I mean, the lowest omega in the pack. She does not have a wolf either!” He sounded more excited about that like he wanted me to shake my head and say that I don’t want her because of that.

“And so?” My question must have caught him off guard because his eyes widened.

“You can’t have a wolfless girl as your mate Alpha King! That would be abominable!” He bellowed as he paced the office over and over again.

“Are you sure it’s because of that, or you don’t want me to take your plaything away from you?” Anger was evident in my tone now and he froze.

“What are you talking about?” His eyes went wide and he stopped.

“Why don’t you tell me? About what you’ve done to her and why you think she does not deserve me as her mate?”

“She’s the pack’s plaything! It would be a slap on your face. I’m sure someone would have had their way with her over and over again.” He said with a sneer as he looked at her. I could see the lewdness in his eyes and he stared at her. Even in front of me. That was the last straw.

He did not see me coming as I grabbed his neck and held him against the wall, pressing his neck in like I would kill him. His oxygen had been cut off because his face was getting blue.

“You think it’s wise to talk about my mate like that in front of me? You have made it obvious that you’re incapable of taking care of a pack. This is how you treat someone because of their status.” He babbled some kind of apology that I was not having.

But then, it would be useless to kill him. I closed my eyes and pushed through his nasty thoughts and I was enraged. He had planned to rape her today. This sick fuck. He had fantasies about her and the things he wanted to do to her.

I checked other ones too, and there was one that stood out to me. She was being whipped by him on her back. That must have been what I was touching when I carried her and other things that had been done to her with his knowing.

I released him and he slid down the wall coughing and trying to catch his breath.

“Get me your father now!” He scrambled out of his office. I pushed my hands through my hair. I was normally reasonable. But I can’t seem to be right now. I turned and my eyes clashed with hers.
