Chapter 1

The moment the flight confirmation appeared, Jared Jackman started a video call with me.

On the screen, he was standing in front of the hotel's floor-to-ceiling window.

With a smile, he asked, "Tasha, why are you still awake?"

If I hadn't just seen those 600-plus posts on his social media, I probably would have melted when he called me that.

I didn't say anything right away.

Jared coaxed me the way he always did. "Did you miss me? Be good. My project is almost done, so I'll be back in three days at most. I'll bring you a gift when I get back."

I asked him, "Are you alone at the hotel?"

There wasn't the slightest change in his expression. If anything, his smile looked even more natural.

"Of course. I'm alone. Didn't I promise you I wouldn't go anywhere while I'm on business trips?"

As soon as he finished speaking, a woman's laughter came from the other end of the call.

The smile on Jared's face faltered for a split second.

The next second, he angled the camera away. Pretending to sound annoyed, he said, "My coworker is having a meeting next door. She's so noisy. I'll call you back later."

As I stared at the dark screen, my fingers went numb from the cold.

He never let me be part of his world, saying he was afraid someone else would fall for me.

So I never went to gatherings with his friends, and I never attended any of his company's annual parties.

Even when one of his closest friends got married, he only said, "Babe, you're too beautiful. I don't want them seeing you."

My eyes started to sting. I couldn't stop myself from using my alternate account to open his feed and look closely at that one photo.

Jared was wearing a white shirt, his hair messy from the sea breeze. He lowered his head to kiss the woman, smiling like someone who had finally gotten what he wanted.

Yet, after seven years together, he still refused to post even one photo of us.

He had said, "Babe, I just don't want anyone bothering us. Love is between two people. There's no need to show it to outsiders.

"I'm possessive. I don't want others to know just how amazing you are."

I believed him back then.

Only now did I understand. It wasn't that he didn't like making his love public; he just didn't want to show me off.

Someone commented under the post, "Jared, you're a solid one. You made it public from the moment you got together. It's been three years already, right?"

Jared replied, "I couldn't stand the thought of her being with me without anyone knowing who she is to me."

I stared at that sentence for a long time.

In our seven years together, he never made our relationship official. We lived together, had a cat, and shared all of life's joys and hardships.

But there was no sign of me on his social media. His friends didn't even know about me.

The love he showed everyone belonged to someone else.

I was just someone he kept hidden away, out of sight, and only there when he needed me.

My phone buzzed again. It was a message from him.

"Babe, the signal was bad just now," he wrote. "Go to sleep early. Don't overthink things. I love you the most."

I didn't reply.

I opened the closet and pushed his shirts aside one by one. At the very back was the white dress I bought last year. It was the one I wore on his birthday while waiting for him to come home for dinner.

He didn't come home that night. He told me he had to work overtime at the last minute.

But that same day, his posts showed him at a concert at the opera house with that woman. The caption read, "I remember everything she likes."

I took the dress and threw it in the trash.

Then I packed my documents, bank cards, laptop, and a few changes of clothes.

After seven years, there was so little I could take with me.

And whatever I couldn't take, I no longer needed.

  • Hiding Me in the Name of Love   Chapter 9

A month later, the finances tied up in my joint account with Jared were finally settled. He transferred my exact half back to me, along with a significant extra amount he labeled as compensation. I didn't want a single penny of it, so I wired the extra funds right back to his account. Compensation meant that a debt could still be measured, calculated, and paid off. But the seven years that I had lost could never be bought back by any amount of money. Zoe came to see me too.She stood downstairs holding the cake I used to love. Her eyes were swollen from crying."Tasha, I know I messed up," she choked out. The wind was biting that day. Looking at her, my mind suddenly flashed back to a scorching summer afternoon during high school. We had squeezed together by the cramped little snack stand near the school gates, sharing a popsicle. We had laughed as we promised that whoever got married first, the other would be her maid of honor. Those feelings had been real, but so was the

The next morning, I made a post on my social media. For the first time in seven years, I typed out Jared's full name. I didn't complain or insult him. I simply laid out the timeline with cold, surgical precision. I shared about his confession in college, our seven-year relationship, and us living together. I also talked about our joint bank account, him meeting my parents, and his promise to marry me.I also told them that he had started dating Yvette three years ago and made their relationship public on social media. He had introduced her to his friends and mother, and flaunted her to everyone while telling me he was "away on business" or "waiting for the right time". Finally, I attached the video from that night at the hotel. In it, Jared said, "I'll marry you, but I'll have a wedding with her too."After hitting upload, I turned off my phone and went grocery shopping with Mom. She held my hand the whole way, just like she did when I was little, and she was terrified I would

Jared didn't leave right away. He stayed downstairs until noon, sending me a relentless barrage of messages from right outside of my front door. He told me he had already deleted all of Yvette's contact information. He promised me he would make up for all the years he had kept me hidden. He said if I was willing to forgive him, he would do whatever it took to win over everyone in my life.I didn't reply to any of his messages. That afternoon, Zoe called me again. This time, she no longer sounded as confident as she did that night. Instead, she sounded exhausted."Tasha, do you really have to take things this far?" she asked.I was sitting by the window, holding the cup of warm water Mom had given me. "What exactly did I do?" I asked calmly. "Jared flew back overnight because of you. Yvette's crying so hard she's having a breakdown. She genuinely didn't know you and Jared were still together. She's a victim in this too!" Zoe said."So?"There was a brief silence on the other

The next morning, I was jolted awake by the commotion downstairs.Mom was speaking quietly outside the front door, her voice colder than usual. "Tasha doesn't want to see you. Leave, now."I felt my chest tighten. I put on a coat and walked to the window.Jared was standing downstairs, still wearing the shirt from that night. It was horribly wrinkled. The moment he looked up and caught sight of me, his eyes lit up instantly. It was as if he had found his last lifeline."Babe, please come down and talk to me," he pleaded.I stayed right where I stood. He stared up at me, his voice painfully hoarse. "I took the earliest flight here. I didn't even bring my luggage. Tasha, I know I messed up. Please don't leave me."There was a time when I absolutely hated seeing him look like this. Whenever he called me "babe" with red-rimmed eyes, I would always give in. I would think about how hard those seven years had been and completely bury all the hurt I had endured. But now, looking down

When the plane landed, a light rain was falling outside. The moment I turned my phone back on, it was flooded with notifications. Jared had called more than 30 times. His text messages tracked a rapid descent from gentle pleading to impatient frustration. "Tasha, where did you go?""Stop this. Didn't I say I would marry you?""You deleted all your posts. What does that mean?"The last message had been sent at 4:00 am."Babe, I was wrong. Please answer the phone, okay?"I stared at the words "I was wrong" and found them almost laughable. He didn't realize he was wrong when his friends publicly humiliated me. He didn't think he was wrong when he promised to marry me while planning a parallel wedding for Yvette. And he certainly hadn't admitted fault for hiding another woman from me for three years. He was only panicking now because he finally realized I was truly gone.Mom and Dad were waiting for me at the arrival gate. The moment Mom caught sight of me, tears welled up in h

I was standing on the street when my phone suddenly buzzed. It was a message from my dad.He wrote, "Tasha, when is Jared coming back? Your mom was talking about your wedding again today."I stared at those words, and my eyes finally started to sting. For Jared, I had lied to my family for too long. I told them he was busy, that he loved me, and that he was just a private person. I kept lying until I almost believed it myself. After a while, I called my mom.Her gentle voice came through instantly. "How is everything? Have you and Jared set a wedding date? When is he coming over?""Mom, we broke up," I managed to choke out. There was a long silence on the other end. Long enough that I thought she would call me impulsive and tell me to give Jared another chance. But she merely sighed softly and asked, "Did he hurt you?"Those words almost shattered the composure I had been fighting so hard to maintain. "Yeah."My mom's voice grew thick with emotion. "Then come home," she said.
