This was one hell of a lie for someone to come up with on the spot and with such confidence too. Perhaps what I dreaded more was the possibility of it being true. If any of this was true, I'd essentially lost everything. Valeria would be gone and so would my relationship with Elliot.I don't think I care about anything else but him. All my dreams of giving him the perfect family he deserved would go down the drain and the thought was eating me up. He would grow up thinking I sent his mother to jail. And he would hate me for it, believing the worst of me. I couldn't let that happen no matter what. The feeling of Cassandra's cold palms on my cheeks shook me from my thoughts. When did she get so close?“Luka, look at me.” She called softly and I gazed into those hazel eyes that were so painfully familiar bu
Luka's POV Anger flared hot in my chest. "What gave you the right—""After working with you these past weeks, watching you, I realized you had nothing to do with my sister's death," Cassandra interrupted. "Which meant Valeria must have been working alone. She killed Isis out of jealousy because she's always loved you, Luka. I did some digging into the both of you and it's pretty obvious from your history together. You both were so close I found myself questioning why you were never dated."The last sentence caught me off guard but it also stung because I knew the reason. I was a coward who ran from my feelings and built walls instead."I had to dig deeper," Cassandra continued, her voice gaining strength. "I needed solid evidence, something that couldn't be dismissed, and I found it, and it's real proof that Valeria was responsible for Isis's death."My mind reeled. "Whatever evidence you have is false and made up, because if it existed, the police would have found it ten years ago."
Luka's POV I stared at Cassandra, trying to process everything she'd just told me. "I suppose from an outside perspective, it does look suspicious," I admitted, my voice hoarse. "Valeria attended Isis's funeral and the sight of her shedding what I assumed were crocodile tears triggered me so much that I did something crazy. I went up to her and asked her to meet me at the registry the very next day. She came and that's how we got married. But it was only for revenge at the time because I was so sure she killed Isis. I wanted to punish her because the law couldn't.""It's not like I could have known your reason for marrying her," Cassandra's voice hardened slightly. "Put yourself in my shoes. If your sister dies and the fiance who allegedly loved her so dearly married his best friend the day after her funeral, wouldn't you be suspicious? I was so sure you both planned it together. That you conspired to kill my sister so you could finally be together. That's why I created this whole f
Luka's POV The confirmation felt like a knife to the chest, even though I'd known it, deep at the back of my mind. “Then who the hell are you?” I demanded, and I was horrified to realize my own voice was thick with tears. She wiped at her tears with the back of her hand. “I'm her sister. Isis's younger sister. Her twin.”I stared at her, trying to process what she was saying. The world felt like it was tilting sideways. “That's impossible. Isis didn't have a sister. She would have told me.” But even as I said it, doubt crept in. How much had Isis really shared about her past?Cassandra let out a bitter laugh. She'd stopped crying now. “Isis was your fiancée, but did you really know her? Did you really know her family background, where she came from, what she ran away from?”“We loved each other,” I protested, on the defensive. “She told me everything.”“Did she?” Cassandra challenged. I could hear the pain in her voice. “Did she tell you she ran away from home? She wanted too much. S
Luka's POV The office building loomed ahead of me, its glass exterior reflecting the darkening sky. It was about to rain, and the stormy weather reflected the state of my mind. I'd parked some time ago, but my hands were still gripping the steering wheel too tight, knuckles white against the leather. Every nerve in my body was on edge. Adrenaline pumped through my veins as I prepared for what I was about to do.I had to know the truth. Too many times, I've thought about it and dwelled on it too much, and let it poison my sleep. Every time I looked at her, that question of if she was really Isis haunted my thoughts. But no more waiting or second-guessing while Valeria was jailed for a crime that she didn't commit.I finally stepped out of the car and slammed the door closed. As I walked through the entrance, everyone stilled or gave me a small nod of respect as I passed, but I barely acknowledged them. I reached the elevator meant for me only and pressed the button for the first floor
Luka's POV "The person this is going to affect most is Elliot," my mother continued, her voice softening. "That poor child. His mother was just arrested for murder, Luka. This is going to be all over the news soon. No kid deserves to see their parent painted as a killer and plastered across every television screen and newspaper in the city."Guilt twisted in my stomach. Elliot. God, I hadn't even thought about Elliot. "I'll handle the media," I said quickly. "I'll make some calls, try to keep this as quiet as possible.""No, leave the media to me," My mom maintained firmly. "I know how to deal with those opportunistic vultures. You focus on Elliot's well-being. Go to the Daelmont mansion, spend time with him. He's going to need support right now, someone to help him process this.""I doubt they'll even let me in," I admitted. "I went to see Valeria and Eren just kicked me out of the station. He swore to ruin me, Mom, to destroy everything I've built. I could see he meant every word.
