Caught between love, betrayal, and the fight to shield her child from the ruthless Sterling legacy, Samantha discovers that the fiercest battles aren’t fought in boardrooms or ballrooms… but in the heart.

I take a deep breath, forcing a smile as I step into the ballroom. No one must see how nervous I am. Tonight, Damian will be named CEO of Sterling Empire… a position long expected of him, though marrying me, a lowborn wife, nearly cost him everything.
I sip a glass of water to steady myself and search for him. We were supposed to enter together, but his secretary insisted otherwise. It’s not unusual to be pushed aside, but I endure it… for his sake. And it’s fine. Because tonight… I also have something good to share with Damian.
Then I see him. Damian Sterling, radiant in a suit chosen by his mother, with a woman clinging to his arm. He smiles at her, laughs with her, and lets her touch him… things he never allows me in public.
I feel a pang in my chest as I watch them giggle.
“Keep it together, Samantha,” I whisper to myself. “Damian isn’t heartless,” I remind myself. “He’ll never betray you.”
I trust my husband, I always have. Behind closed doors, he shows me love. When we’re alone, he makes up for the coldness he shows in public. In those quiet, intimate moments, I feel it. And I know he cares. My husband loves me… he just doesn’t want the world to see.
But why must he hide it?
His family despises me, treating me as less than human. Still, I married Damian, not them. I can endure their hatred… as long as he loves me.
Yet tonight, he holds another woman’s hand. Perhaps the one his mother always dreamed for him. I clutch my chest, closing my eyes briefly as I breathe. I should stop thinking nonsense or I’ll ruin today’s celebration.
“Enough… Just smile like you always do,” I mutter, curling a wide smile on my lips.
I set my glass down and move toward him, careful not to speak to strangers. One photo could ruin my marriage. Georgia, my mother-in-law would seize any opportunity to drive me out of the Sterling family, even though she knows I would never do something like betraying my husband. I’ve said countless times that I care nothing for their wealth and only want to be with him, but my words carry no weight against their beliefs.
She’s never believed my love for Damian is real.
In the end, the Sterlings will never accept me, no matter what I do. Perhaps if I had been born into a wealthy clan, they might have deemed me worthy of their family. But that is a dream that can never be realized. I love my parents with all my heart, and I would never trade them…not in this life, nor the next.
I have made peace with the differences between Damian’s family and mine. Their world is built on wealth and status, while mine is built on love and loyalty. And though they may never see me as one of their own, I know where I truly belong.
Damian is all I need… he’s the only reason why I stay even if it’s hard. As long as he loves me, comforts me at night after his mother’s harsh words, I can endure it. His embrace is my refuge, his sweet promises give me strength. When the world around us doubts me, he reminds me that I am enough.
The battles with his family may never end, but I no longer fight for their approval. I fight only to protect the love we share. Damian’s presence is proof that I belong, not to their wealth or their name, but to the bond we’ve built together and the vow we made. And as long as he chooses me, I will stand firm, no matter how cold the walls of the Sterling household become.
“Damian, honey…” My voice falters when he glances at me coldly, then he glares.
Is he mad? Should I not call out to him now that we’re in public? I only want him to notice me… Then maybe he won’t get too close to the woman clinging to him right now.
Is it my fault for wanting his attention? I’m not asking for it everyday… Just when I need it most and now is one of those times. So, why?
I always have endless questions to ask that only he could answer, but I’m also afraid to hear his response.
“W-Wait. Can we—” I lift my hand, reaching for him when someone grabs and yanks it down.
“Hey!” A familiar voice cuts in.
I freeze. It’s Georgia.
“Damian,” she says, raising her eyebrows.
Damian nods his head and sighs. He didn’t spare me another glance before ushering his company away from us.
I feel my world crumbling while staring at his back. He has the time to entertain someone else when his wife is going to be chewed out by his mother alive.
“Hah…” I bite my lower lip, holding back my tears.
I thought I’m used to this… Treated as a stranger by the man I fought for all these years. I thought it’s okay to endure as long as he’s on my side. But his indifference in times like this is the hardest part.
“What are you trying to do now, huh? Ruining my plans again?” Her words slice through me. “Sit down or stand in the corner, Samantha. Don’t embarrass yourself. If you want to keep sleeping in that luxurious bed I’ve allowed you to borrow, then behave. Because soon…” Her smirk deepens. “…Damian will realize he deserves someone better. And when that day comes, you’ll be nothing but a memory.”
My breath falters as her words stab deeper in my chest. I clutch the fabric of my dress, forcing my trembling hands to stay still.
Desperately, my eyes search the room for him… my anchor, my reason to endure.
Finally, I found him. And for a fleeing second, our eyes met. Hope surges through me… but then, he looks away.
“D-Damian…” I utter, my heart twisting in pain I could never name.
Damian’s POV“... Let’s divorce.”My mind went blank for a moment, then her words echoed in my head. My eyes widened in disbelief, unable to process that those cold, emotionless words had come from Samantha’s lips.Samantha has always been obedient to me. She listens, she follows, she endures. So why now? Why is she suddenly asking for divorce?“What did you say?” I feel the crease on my forehead deepening as I watch her click her tongue in front of me. “You want a divorce? Why, Samantha?”She’s always the one who wants to work out things between us. So, why now? In the past, I also thought of giving up, but I didn’t… Because she begs me to fight alongside her. And now she’s giving up just like that?“Why, you ask? Seriously, Damian. You’re still asking me that?” she snaps, frustration flashing across her face.I just realized her eyes were swollen and she had dark circles around them.… Did she stay up and cry all night? Is it because I ignored her at the party again? But she should a
Samantha’s POVI woke up to a heavy thing wrapped around me. Forcing my eyes open, a groan escapes my mouth as I push whatever it is clinging to me.“Good morning,” Damian greets, smiling from ear to ear.I’m going to smile back when I caught a whiff of alcohol. He’s drunk and he’s not even hiding it.“What’s with that frown?” He asks, grinning like a fool.I cover my nose and move away, getting out of the bed. “Where were you last night?”I cried myself to sleep when he didn’t get home after sunrise. I don’t even know how to face him now after the photos I’ve seen from the news.Damian follows and pulls me in his arms. “You know where I was last night. I was appointed as the CEO, don’t you remember?” he mutters, snuggling his face in the crack between my neck and shoulder.“I see. You were with that woman? Is it Lorraine? Yeah, her name’s Lorraine Belrose,” I say bitterly, holding my hands into fists.“Oh, that? Yeah. We’re cooperating with Belrose and she needs an escort so I had no
Samantha’s POVAs if Georgia looking down on me isn’t enough, even Victoria makes a mockery of my marriage with Damian. All I’ve ever wanted was to live with the man I love, to be accepted for who I am. But with the Sterlings, such things are impossible.“Even my husband’s secretary doesn’t acknowledge me as his wife. I’ve been married to Damian for two years now, and they still call me Miss Gregory,” I sob, burying my face in my palms on the way back to the Sterling mansion. It’s already past seven in the evening when I arrive, and the maids don’t even bother to greet me, like always. Everyone treats me like air in this cold mansion… or shall I say a prison I willingly stepped into the day I married Damian. It was painful at first, but I grew numb. The pain was once unbearable, but I learned to endure it. I came here expecting worse, knowing fully well what could happen. I chose to spare my heart and accept every humiliation from his family… believing it was all worth it. Believing h
Damian’s POV“What’s wrong, Mr. Sterling? Do you know her?”I keep my mouth shut, avoiding the gaze and question from the woman next to me. It’s going to be another problem if she finds out that Samantha is my wife. The Belrose clan has a strong family value. If they discover that my family’s looking down on their in-law, they might sever the cooperation we have.“It’s nothing. Just don’t mind her,” I reply, holding back the urge to look behind me.Samantha’s probably at a loss now on what’s going on. After all, I promised to stay by her side tonight. But things came up, and I have a reason for breaking that promise. If she loves me, she will understand without me explaining the details.“Pfft!”I purse my lips when I see Victoria giggling at the side. She does that whenever Mom scolds Samantha—Ah! This is the worst.Turning my head back, I saw Samantha looking in my direction. Her eyes are teary like she's about to cry, proving my suspicion. Mom will not miss a day telling her off.
