Face Slapping

The High-Ed Aptitude Test (HAT) was fast approaching. My father had reserved the entire hotel next to my exam venue so I could study in peace. While I was registering my accommodation with my school's HAT committee, I overheard Ashley, my roommate at the school dorm, giggling with her friends. "You know who has more money than IQ? Regina Fairfax. That's who. She's soft in both the head and the heart. If I tell her I'm worried about leaving her alone in the hotel, she'll immediately invite me to stay there too, no questions asked! "I've had it all planned out, girls. I'll be staying in the presidential suite for free, and I'll throw a party there! Talk about getting a return on my amazing social skills! "Now, any of you who can pay me 80 bucks can secure a spot at my fabulous party!" She was talking about me! How dare she?! I immediately called my father. "Dad, cancel the reservation. Shutting down the whole place isn't good for business. We should be making more money!"

Chapter 1
I stood on the balcony after the call ended. My father was a little stunned at first, but he eventually agreed and encouraged me to study hard.I turned and looked through the glass door. Ashley Wynn was rummaging through my drawer. We were roommates in the school dormitory, and this happened often. With a smirk, I slid the door open and stepped into the room.Ashley snatched her hand back at once and flashed me her sweetest, most saccharine smile. "Done talking to your dad, bestie?"She handed me a glass of lemonade. "You look a little pale and tired, Regina. You've been working so hard lately! Have some of this. I made it myself!"She continued with laughably fake concern. "By the way, you're going to stay at a hotel all alone, right? It sounds scary staying by yourself in an empty hotel. I've decided it can't be helped. I'll stay with you to keep you company. It'll be the perfect chance for me to tutor you in math too."I shot her a disdainful look and pushed the lemonade away

Chapter 2
If Ashley told them the truth, she would have to refund money she no longer had, all while suffering major reputational damage. She lifted her head and glared at the hotel stickers on Regina's suitcase. Her lips seemed to tremble.-Night had fallen.Lying in bed, I checked my phone. My father had sent me a screenshot of the hotel's check-in system. The entire top floor had been prepared and was ready for use."This floor was supposed to be reserved exclusively for you during this period, but you said you wanted to make some money from it, right?" he said in a voice message. "The client who booked it is someone rather special, so you should stay home instead. I've arranged for a chauffeur to drive you to the exam location every day."I sent my father a cat-giving-a-thumbs-up sticker and shoved my phone under my pillow.Closing my eyes, I smiled. "Let's see how this ends for you, bitch."…At noon the next day, I was leaving the classroom with a glass of water when a group sudd

Chapter 3
"If any of you still think you can guilt-trip me, I'll make sure you can't even enter the exam hall tomorrow. You can kiss your attendance goodbye!" I proclaimed loudly. "Try me!"Students immediately rushed toward Ashley and demanded refunds."It was 80 dollars, you bitch! Give it back! I'm not staying at the hotel anyway!""You lied to us! You said you'd already booked it! You treated us like clowns!"The situation quickly spiraled out of control. Ashley let out a piercing scream and collapsed straight into Erik's arms."Ash? Ash! Wake up!" he cried before pulling her tightly against him and shooting me a venomous glare. "You're not getting away with this, you blackhearted bitch! If anything happens to her... I'll make you pay!"I scoffed and returned to the classroom. The atmosphere in my dorm room that night was awkward and tense.Ashley might have escaped the students' fury by pretending to faint, but she was still almost 900 dollars in debt. How was she supposed to pay th

I typed quickly: [No. Let them in. Set the surveillance cameras to their highest resolution and record everything!]Then I slipped my phone into my pocket, slung my bag over my shoulder, and stepped out of the school into the blinding noonday sunlight.-Thick, expensive rugs muffled the footsteps of a handful of intruders on the 18th floor.Ashley took the lead. She scanned the grand interior décor and crystal chandelier, burning with jealousy."Fuck that bitch! Why does she always get to stay in places this luxurious?" she muttered under her breath. The students stared at the redwood doors lining the corridor and swallowed hard."This is way too luxurious for us, Ash. I don't really think we can stay here," one of the girls said nervously."Don't be a wuss!" Ashley snapped, puffing out her chest to hide her own growing anxiety. She pointed at a large door with a floral engraving at the end of the corridor. "See that? That's the presidential suite! We're taking that one! It o

The room fell silent. Every eye at the conference table swung toward Ashley, who had not yet lowered her foot, and Eric, who still clutched the door seal.Ashley's teeth chattered with fear. Her legs felt like jelly. She had to grip the door to keep herself from collapsing, and even then, her fingers trembled.Ernest set down his document and frowned. Somehow, that alone was enough to make the students feel as though they could barely breathe."Middleton High? Elite SAT Class? Did I hear that correctly?" he asked evenly, removing his reading glasses. He swept a cold gaze over Ashley and her entourage before stopping at Eric's hand."Oho. Is that a break-in tool I see? So you managed to break into the State Education Board's SAT headquarters and demand that we leave," Ernest sneered with a cold smile. "Kids these days have such boundless bravado!"He slammed his hand on the table and shot to his feet. "Who gave you permission to intrude on our confidential meeting?! This is a stat

Chapter 6
"Exactly! She collected 80 dollars from all of us! It was extortion!" another student chimed in."She said Regina Fairfax was providing the rooms on the 18th floor for free, and that the money we paid was just to secure our spots before anyone else could take them!"Ashley whipped around toward her friends and screamed at the top of her lungs, "Shut the fuck up!"Even Eric pointed at her. "It's true! This was all her idea! She said the hotel belongs to Regina, so nothing would happen to us if we squatted here for a few days! She tricked us into joining!"Ashley's pupils dilated with fear.Ernest ignored the students altogether and turned to Robert. "Inform their school. Call the cops as well."Robert nodded and began calling Middleton High's headmaster and the district HAT committee.Ashley collapsed onto the rug in horror."Don't call the cops! Please don't! I'm begging you! Don't call the cops!" she wailed through her tears. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean for any of this to happen

"Do you object to the above?" the officer asked.Ashley bit her lip. Her eyes remained fixed on her red, swollen wrists."How did you get the access card?"After a few seconds of silence, she murmured through clenched teeth, "We paid a janitor 115 dollars for it.""Whose idea was that?""Mine...""You were the one who prepared the door seal too, weren't you?""Yes."The officer flipped to another page. "According to the other students involved, you charged 80 dollars per person under the guise of making reservations despite having no authority or privilege to do so. Where did the money you collected go?"Ashley's teeth chattered. She swallowed. "I... hadn't managed to refund it.""I asked where the money went."She lowered her head. "I spent it."The officer immediately wrote down: [Possible fraud offense: 1,120 dollars.]Another officer's phone rang. He glanced at the screen and stepped out of the interrogation room to answer it.A minute later, he returned with a grim e

Chapter 8
Riley went on for about twenty minutes before an officer finally warned her, "Your daughter intruded on a highly confidential meeting! That's no different from trespassing on a military base, ma'am! If you keep causing a scene, it'll only make it harder for her to receive a reduced sentence when she goes to trial!"Riley was stunned. She stopped making a scene, but that didn't mean she had given up. After learning where Regina's exam hall was, she hailed a cab and arrived there at noon.-I had just finished my first test when Riley dropped to her knees in front of me."Regina, right? You must be Regina! Please help!" she cried, grabbing my foot as though she were a servant pleading for mercy. "Please, I'm begging you! Please write an appeal to the court and explain that this was all a misunderstanding! I can use it to bail my daughter out! Please! I'm begging you!"I looked down at her. The commotion quickly drew the attention of students, teachers, and security personnel. The a

For being an accessory to Ashley's crime, Eric's exam result that year was invalidated, and the offense was permanently recorded in his government file.He was the first to beg for mercy.[I was wrong, Regina! Please! Talk to the school for me! I can't have my exam invalidated! I've spent 12 years studying for this!]The others soon followed.[Regina, you know I'm just another victim of Ashley's scam! I'm innocent!][My mom hasn't had an appetite for three days since the notice arrived. She won't eat at all… Please help us!][Please, talk to the Education Ministry for us! I know you can change their minds…]I read every message without replying. Then I left our class WhatsApp group and deleted every means of contacting Ashley. After that, I blacklisted Eric's number and blocked every student involved in the incident.…I was sunbathing on the balcony when the results were released. With little interest, I entered my exam ID and personal identification number, only to discove

Ashley scanned the courtroom and realized Regina hadn't attended the trial at all."I admit my guilt," she croaked. Her sentence was handed down around 3:00 p.m. For all her crimes combined, she received a three-year prison sentence and a 1,200-dollar fine. The realization that she would spend three years behind bars left her frozen. Two court officers escorted her from the witness stand. As she passed the last row of seats, she glanced at her parents. Her mother sat motionless, silent in her seat. Her father crouched beside his chair with his face buried in his hands. She stepped into the corridor outside. Rays of the setting sun filtered through a lone window, stretching her shadow across the floor. She walked through the door at the far end of the hall. When it closed behind her, it was as though she had disappeared from public view altogether.…A month passed after the trial. The janitor who had sold her access card to Ashley was fired from the hotel and sued for financi
