Chapter 1

Author: Clara Tangerine
I looked at my son, Andy Lewis, lying peacefully at the hospital morgue, overwhelmed by grief at his lifeless body.

Andy had always been a good kid. I had never once needed to worry too much for him, yet I had been a terrible father. I could not even care for and protect him.

Andy suffered from a sudden liver failure, desperately needing a liver transplant. The only person whose liver was compatible was my wife, Vivian Grant.

However, on the second day the results came out, she was sent abroad to further her career.

The first day that she left, I begged her to come back to donate her liver to her son. She said that she finally had the chance to go abroad, so she did not want to give it up.

I then begged her to return daily for 18 days, but she turned me down heartlessly.

On the nineteenth day, the doctor told me that Andy's situation was turning for the worse and that he needed a liver transplant as soon as possible. I begged Vivian to return once more to help her son.

She said that if she left halfway, her career would be over. She told me to transfer Andy to a private hospital and to seek other compatible matches.

The private hospital was at full capacity, so they refused to take us in. We had no choice but to return to a public hospital.

Andy was in so much pain that his face had lost all its color. Still, he looked at me with hope in his eyes.

"Daddy, why isn't Mommy here yet? Did I do something wrong to make her angry?"

I did not know how to console my son. I thought that maybe I didn't make myself clear and Vivian had misunderstood me, that she thought our son wasn't in a dire situation.

I begged Vivian once more for help, together with Andy's primary doctor. Vivian finally budged and said that she would take two days off to donate her liver to Andy.

However, on the day of the surgery, I waited outside the operating theater for the entire day, but Vivian was nowhere to be seen. Even when I received news that my son had passed away, Vivian was not there at all.

When I took my phone out, just about to call Vivian to ask why she had not showed up, I saw a photo sent to me by Jason Sanderson.

In the photo, Vivian was buried in his arms, smiling widely, while his son, Luke, held her hands.

With trembling fingers, I opened Jason's social media page to see a caption that stabbed me in the heart.

[20th day of traveling around the world. Dr. Grant gave up her career to help fulfil my son's dream of traveling the world.]

If I had not seen Jason's social media page, I would not have known that my wife had accompanied another child to travel around the world.

I held my son's icy hands, feeling a pang of grief overwhelming me.

At that moment, Vivian called.

"Charlie, Luke got full marks on his exams. His wish was to have his Daddy and Mommy travel around the world with him. As you know, he doesn't have a mother, so I couldn't bear to watch him not get his wish. We'll return in three days. We can have the surgery for Andy then."

My mind blanked. If she had called two days ago, I would surely have jumped up with joy.

I could not find myself getting happy.

Her son's life was not as important as helping someone else's child fulfill their wish.

Vivian seemed to sense that something was up.

She said anxiously, "Charlie, say something."

I came to my senses and asked, "Vivian, do you know that your son's situation is really dire?"

Vivian was stunned. It finally hit her that Andy's transplant could no longer be delayed.

"Charlie, don't worry. I'll buy a flight ticket home right away."

Suddenly, Luke, at the other end of the line, asked Vivian innocently, "Mommy, for our final stop, I want to go to the romantic city of Pary. Will you come with me?"

Vivian thought for a while before saying to me, "Charlie, my friends at the hospital told me that Andy's condition isn't acute. I'll still make it in time when I return in three days. Please be more understanding and wait for me."

I knew that would be the answer.

Ever since Jason had returned to the country, all she cared about was him and Luke. She had initially agreed to celebrate Andy's birthday, but she ended standing us up because Luke had a cold.

Vivian said that since Luke did not have a mother, she needed to take care of him. She told me and Andy to be more understanding.

She gave Andy's birthday present to Luke. She canceled the family dinner to take Luke to a theme park. Every time she did that, all she said was for us to be more understanding.

She knew that Andy and I would forgive her, that we would wait for her, so she fearlessly ignored us and hurt us over and over again.

I no longer wanted to be understanding. My son was dead, and so was our marriage.

"Charlie, this is God's punishment for me. He's punishing me for not giving Andy my liver. He's punishing me for not being a good mother. I've paid the price. Please, could you come back to me? "I know how you feel now. I shouldn't have done that to you and Andy. I'm a monster. As long as you forgive me, I'll do anything you want."Vivian slapped herself while saying that to me.I looked at her icily. "Vivian, sign the divorce papers and stay away from me. Then, I'll forgive you."She looked at me, stunned. I calmly looked into her eyes.Vivian asked, "You've fallen for that woman who cooks for you everyday, right?"I nodded.Ten minutes later, Vivian lowered her head in dejection and accepted defeat. "Okay. I get it."She signed the divorce papers and vanished from my life. The next time I saw Vivian and Jason was in court. Through the lawyers, I finally understood the entire incident.Jason had drugged Vivian. When she was unconscious, he got a doctor to cut her kidney out

When I saw Vivian last night, I decided to tell Jason where she was so he could come and torment her.Vivian furrowed her brows when Jason entered."Vivian, I've been looking for you everywhere."Jason went up to hug Vivian, but she swerved. Jason ended up hugging the air.Vivian pointed at Jason and snapped, "Why are you here? I told you I'll never give your son my kidney. If it wasn't for you, Charlie wouldn't have left me and Andy wouldn't have died. You still want me to save your son's life after this? Dream on!"The two of them engaged in a fierce fight. I pretended not to notice, waiting for the right time to call the police.Sophia was released due to insufficient evidence. Vivian, on the contrary, was sentenced to 15 days in prison for fighting. After that incident, my view of Sophia changed. I started to accept her pursuits. After spending time with her, my feelings for her intensified.I asked her once, curiously, why she kept pursuing me. She looked at me seriously a

I had no reaction seeing Vivian. There was no love, nor was there any hatred. I calmly said, "Vivian, let go. We're divorced."Vivian replied with a hint of manic, "Charlie, I didn't sign the papers. We are still husband and wife. Andy's death was my fault. I was tricked by Jason and Luke. Will you forgive me? Can we restart again?"I pushed Vivian away and looked her in the eye."Vivian, we can never go back to before. I have no right to forgive you. The person you need to ask for forgiveness from is Andy."Vivian was stunned for a while before hugging me once more. "Charlie, it's okay. We can make another baby. Andy will return again."Then, Vivian tried to kiss me. I snapped, "Vivian, behave yourself.”Vivian ignored me. Instead, she hugged me tighter. "Let go of him."Right in the nick of time, Sophia appeared. She slammed her bag heavily on Vivian's face, which prompted Vivian to let go of me in pain.Sophia placed herself in front of me.Vivian glared at me with wi

Jason fell to the ground and hit his head. His forehead started to bleed."You did this on purpose, right?" Vivian questioned.Jason cowered. "I don't know what you're talking about."Vivian pounced on him and grabbed him by his neck. She barked viciously, "You deliberately begged me to travel the world with you. Then, you posted our photos on social media to provoke Charlie. You also seduced me in front of Charlie…"Jason's face flushed red, but he chuckled at Vivian provokingly."Vivian, as if you didn't know Andy needed a liver transplant. Charlie had begged you to do it a million times, but you kept turning him down. To put in bluntly, you're just afraid, you scum. Now that Andy's dead, you can cut out the good mother act.""Shut up. Stop talking!"Vivian let go of Jason. She looked at herself in the reflection of the glass doors and saw what a mess she was in.Jason was right. She knew her son needed a liver transplant, yet she still insisted on leaving. Could it really b

"Andy."I went over to hug Andy's dead body.Vivian squeezed Andy's hand tightly. "Andy Lewis, stop pretending. Get up."I shoved Vivian away and yelled with reddened eyes, "Vivian, have you gone mad?! Can't you see that he's dead?"Vivian, on the floor, snickered. "Charlie, let's see how long you can put on this act. I'll wait for you to come and beg me to give Andy a liver transplant again soon."Then, Vivian left with Jason. At noon, I cried as Andy's body was being carried into the furnace. From that point onward, I was all alone.I placed his ashes in an urn and sat with him until the sun went down. The entire day, Vivian did not even ask about him.It was better that way.I would rather Andy leave with the beautiful memories that he had instead of the vile things that Vivian had done to him.As the day ended, I felt that my marriage to Vivian had ended as well. When I alighted from the plane, I received a flood of messages from Vivian.[Charlie, I'm sorry. Vivian stuttered, "I-I…"Jason replied on her behalf, "Charlie, please don't come at me now. Luke is still waiting for Vivian to save his life."Vivian sighed in relief. "Charlie, don't be mad. I'm a doctor. It's my job to care for the sick. Wait for me. I'll be back soon."Then, Vivian left with Jason.Looking at them leaving, I said under my breath, "Vivian, there is no need to do that."I heard the nurses talking. Vivian's kidney was compatible to Luke's. She had signed an agreement to donate her kidney to Luke after a week's of rest.Even after knowing the outcome, my heart still ached. After an entire busy day at the hospital, I wanted to find an empty room to rest. I opened the door to see Vivian and Jason kissing passionately. When they saw me, Vivian immediately broke apart and said, "Charlie, Luke is sick. I was just consoling Jason."I could not help but reply sarcastically, "So you kiss him as consolation?"Vivian was about to explain herself, but Jason pulled her
