"What the fuck are you telling her Liam?" Ethan seethed, looking between me and his brother, obviously waiting for an explanation.
"Relax bro, I was just telling her what happened with Lucy." Liam tried to explain.
"And what right do you think you have to tell her that?" He bellowed angrily at his brother again.
"Chill out Ethan, isn't she supposed to be your wife? Aren't you supposed to tell her everything?" Liam reasoned out.
"I'm sorry I'm not pussy whipped like you are." Ethan made one final remark and he left the room, pulling me along behind him.
He continued pulling me in the direction of the parking lot, and he didn't realize it, but his grip was becoming tighter and tighter.
"You're hurting me, Ethan," I whispered to him at first but he didn't hear me.
"Ethan!" I called him louder and he heard this time around.
"What?!!!" He roared at me and I shrunk back in fear. He had a dangerous look in his eyes, his eyes were glazed.
"You're hurting me please." I tried again.
"I'm hurting you?" He asked again and I nodded.
He started laughing and gripped me tighter than before and pulled me in the direction of the parking lot.
He flung me into the car as soon as the car was parked and the door opened.
He got into the seat beside me, "Drive!!" He yelled at the driver and we drove off immediately.
We didn't say anything till we got back home. He was fuming throughout the entire period of drive back home, I could feel him shaking with rage, but he didn't say anything.
I planned to retire to my room as soon as we got back home but Ethan had other plans.
"Where are you going?" He sat down in the living room and took a sip of what looked like whiskey.
"Huh?" I asked dumbly and it only infuriated him more.
"Huh? Do you have a hearing problem? That's all you ever say when I talk to you."
"I'm sorry, I'll be more attentive now."
"What were you discussing with Liam?"
"Nothing of any importance." I tried to play it off but that only angered him more.
"Nothing of any importance? Who the fuck do you think you are and what gives you the right to tell me it's nothing of importance?" He roared at me and I shrank back in fear again.
I realized then when I looked into Ethan's eyes that he wasn't angry, he had just been hurt before and he was hiding his hurt behind his anger.
I mustered up some courage and spoke to him, "Ethan I know whatever you went through with Lucy must have not been easy but no one in your life right now deserves this harsh treatment you're giving them. We all care for you and we want to help you, but we can only do that if you'll allow us."
This was the first time I had spoken this much to him and for a quick minute, he looked to be in deep thoughts about what I said, so I thought my words had touched him.
I even went as far as hugging him, foolishly hoping he'd return my hug but all my hopes went down the drain when I felt something been poured on me.
I gasped softly and stepped back from Ethan, he had emptied his whiskey bottle all over my head.
"That was an expensive bottle you made me waste." He asked quietly, "Who do you think you are? We're only married on paper Kate. You think if I had the choice, I would choose you?" He asked rhetorically and laughed at his question.
I just stood there, shaking violently, I don't know if it was the cause of the whiskey or because I was sad by what he was saying, but I just stood there and cried.
"I would never choose you, Kate. You wanna know why? Because you're below me, You don't match up to my standards and I deserve better than a piece of trash that was thrown my way."
"STOP!!!" I yelled and did something I never thought I could do, I slapped him. It was a completely reflex action but I gasped softly and stepped away from him when it happened.
"I'm sorry Ethan, I didn't mean to do that. Please for……" My head also whipped to the side before I could finish my sentence.
He slapped me back.
When my eyes met his back and he saw tears in my eyes, for once, I saw regret in his eyes but it was gone as quickly as it came.
"Fuck this and fuck you."
He yelled and gripped my arm and started pulling me upstairs, no doubt locking me back inside that room.
I didn't even struggle or put up a fight, I just quietly allowed myself to be dragged along with him. He threw me inside the room and locked the door.
Only when I heard his footsteps disappear did I allow myself to cry? It dawned on me then that this was what my life was going to be like from this moment henceforth.
Ethan Robinson was going to live up to his promise, he was going to make my life hell.
Things have been quiet since that night Ethan slapped me. After locking me in my room again, I didn't hear anything from him the next morning. He didn't even bother to bring me breakfast, he had the maids doing that and he also told them that they could unlock the door to my room. I was now free to roam about the house. There wasn't much I could do but I was grateful for a little freedom and some breath of fresh air at least. The whole apartment was so dry and bare, there was nothing to look at. And because of the workers around, there was nothing I could do as well. I took solace in Ethan's study though, I didn't want him to know I even stepped foot in his office. So every morning after he left for work, I'd go there, pick a book to read for the day and I'd make sure to return it to its rightful position before he got back in the night. So far, that has been helping me and I was more than happy just to be able to do one of the things I loved so dearly, reading. After Ethan left
"No, we didn't do anything," Ethan explained to the other person on the call. "Well, that's what I'm paying you to do, isn't it?" He yelled again and after that, I just tuned him out and focused my attention on the TV. The reporters were analyzing my relationship with Ethan, they were talking about how everything was nothing more than just a business ploy to merge our companies. I was not sure what right they had to sit there and bash us for our relationship which had nothing to do with them, whatever the reason might be for Ethan and I being together, it was not anyone's business and we didn't owe a single person any explanation whatsoever. "Hey, you." Ethan came to stand in front of me and snapped his fingers in my face, "Are you sure you didn't do or say anything to anyone? I know you're not the smartest person to deal with, you might have let it slip even without realizing." He was accusing me again of something which I had no idea of. "I didn't do or say anything to anyone E
Ethan was seething at the scene playing out in front of him. Here I was in my childhood home, with my stepbrother who may or may not be in love with me, his hands were wrapped around my waist and we were pressed together tightly. I knew the scene was misleading, but if Ethan had come up even a few seconds earlier, he would have seen what happened. He would have seen that, while I was trying to get away from Dad and take refuge in my room, I had accidentally slammed into Jake and to keep me from falling, Jake had wrapped his arms around my waist and held me up. I knew there was no way he would believe us now, especially me as any type of excuse or reason I tried to give him would only make me look guilty but I still had to try. Just as I was about to open my mouth and talk, Ethan's voice beat me to it, "Do you plan on going into him or he's going to let you go at some point, next year perhaps?" He asked me in a cold voice. I was confused at first because I had no idea what he was r
"Mum, calm down please, I can explain." Ethan started, trying to pacify his mum but she was in no mood to be calmed down. "I'm listening to you Ethan and you better have a damn good reason why your wife isn't sleeping in the same room with you and an even better one for why she sleeps in this place." She looked around my room with disgust. I guess seeing it now, the room was very bad. There was no furniture in the room, and the painting on the walls was faded already, and I usually slept on a worn-out mattress.Even the maids in this house had better places and better rooms to sleep in, how much more me? I was supposed to be Ethan's wife or so I thought. "What's going on here? I was hearing your voices from downstairs." Before we knew what was going on again, another voice joined us and this time it was Ethan's dad and Liam's wife who had joined us. "Let's all calm down first, I can offer a perfectly reasonable explanation for all you're seeing here." Ethan tried explaining himsel
Chapter Ten. FLASHBACK TO FIVE YEARS AGO. Ethan Robinson had just graduated from college and he couldn't be more ready to step into the real world and take on some real responsibilities. He was eager, he was passionate and he wanted to get his hands dirty, as he liked to say. His father had been promising him ownership of the company ever since his older brother made the decision not to take over, Ethan couldn't understand the reason behind his brother's decision, it was their family's legacy afterall, but all Liam told him was that he would understand later on. Liam was newly wedded and Ethan thought this was the reason why he had refused to accept the position, how could he chose to spend more time with his wife whom he was going to be with for the rest of their lives over carrying on a family's legacy? Ethan would never understand, at least not yet, but he was so certain he wasn't going to make the same mistakes his brother had made that rendered him at the mercy of another wo
Chapter Eleven. All the previous giddiness Ethan had been feeling left him immediately after his dad made the announcement he just did. What his dad had just indirectly said was that the weight of the company now rested on their shoulders. Whether they were going to make it out of this unscathed like his father had promised the rest of the employees was now up to them. Ethan found himself shrinking at the weight of this responsibility. Damien was just a mess as much as Ethan was at the moment, the only difference was that Ethan managed to compose himself well while Damien on the other hand was already freaking out. Sweat beads were forming on his forehead and he couldn't stop his hands from shaking, he quickly hid his hands inside his pocket to hide the obvious shaking of his hands. "Do you want us to come up with different pitches or do we all work together on a single pitch?" Lucy had turned to Mr. Robinson and asked him.Lucy wasn't phased by the news Mr Robinson had just spru
Present day. I stood up to get another round of coffee for everyone, to say it has been a long night was quite an understatement, it had been my longest night yet in a long time. I couldn't believe what my ears had just heard, Ethan had been through a lot, a whole lot to be honest. I didn't know what betrayal felt like but I knew betrayal from the people you held closest was the worst and it would hurt more than any other betrayal and they would leave the deepest scars. "Turns out, it was Damien that had intentionally planted Lucy in Ethan's life." Liam continued after I passed him another cup of coffee."He knew exactly the type of girl that would be capable of catching Ethan's attention and that Ethan would be attracted to her, so he took his time prepping her for the role, and judging from the outcome, she played her role quite well," Liam explained further to me. "But all for what?" I asked angrily.I was furious and all I wanted to do was meet this so-called Damien friend of
Chapter ThirteenTwo weeks!!That was how long I had been on my own, by myself in this gigantic and eerily quiet house. Two whole weeks, since I last heard, saw, or spoke to Ethan. At first, I thought he just needed time to be alone and blow off some steam, I knew how bothered he would feel about me coming into his private space.I had invaded his home at first, not by my own choice anyways, we had to remember that I was still a victim in all of this, but I had invaded his home nonetheless and now, I was invading his very personal space, his room. After the third day of complete silence from him, I knew he wasn't just blowing off steam again, this was becoming more serious and we had to do something about it, I became increasingly worried when I heard he hadn't been to work all those times as well. "I then had to call his parents as I didn't even have his contact, funny right?" I was his wife, yet I didn't even have his contact, not to talk of getting in touch with him.Anyways, af
